Re:It's about being truthful
It cost me nothing because I had 10 win7 licenses from an MSDN subscription paid for by my previous employer.
So these licenses are owned by a previous employer? It is my understanding that if the company owned it, your rights to use it were lost when you left the company. (from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=2b1504e6-0bf1-46da-be0e-85cc792c6b9d#Overview )
And playing games on an MSDN OS is explicitly forbidden in the FAQ.
Using the software in any other way, such as for doing email, playing games, or editing a document is another use and is not covered by the MSDN Subscription license.
(from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/cc150618.aspx )
If you're looking for a valid reason to run Windows, "just because you happen to have an (unlicensed) copy" isn't it.
That makes it pretty difficult to develop software for an OS if you're not allowed to use the OS.

Re:Can someone explain how it works?
The MS Security Advisory (2286198) states,
The vulnerability exists because Windows incorrectly parses shortcuts in such a way that malicious code may be executed when the user clicks the displayed icon of a specially crafted shortcut.
Sounds like a vulnerability in the way the Details panel in Explorer is updated when the user highlights a maliciously malformed icon. However the MS page did indicate that the user has to actually click on the icon, so it appears that simply autoplaying the drive would not be enough to infect you (unlike some of the PDF/JPEG - or was it PNG - exploits that I seem to remember which infected your computer by an exploit of the code that generated the Explorer thumbnail). That said, merely highlighting an icon absolutely should not execute any untrusted code.
In the meantime, prudent action would be to keep your OS and AV updated, take care of USB removable storage devices, and not click on any shortcut files on external devices unless you’re certain of their source and trustworthiness. It might also not be a bad idea to modify your Windows registry to show the
.lnk extension on shortcut files. Remove the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\lnkfile\NeverShowExt key:REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\lnkfile]
"NeverShowExt"=-Microsoft states that they are still reviewing the vulnerability and I assume they will patch it as soon as they can. The claim that they have “no plans to patch” appears to be not a bit true.

Re:It would help
CGI works by having the server executes the program (passing the data to it from STDIN or the command line) and then retreiving the page's complete HTML code from STDOUT. You can use any file that can be executed and use STDIN/STDOUT in this manner that is located in a specified location(like cgi-bin). On Windows this would be any exe, com, pif, bat or cmd file, and the extension must be there for the operating system to determine that it is an executable. On Linux you can use any file that +x permissions, compiled binaries or scripts with a bang at the beginning, so it can have any extension you want (or none) for a CGI.
People used to write a lot of CGI applications in perl because of it's text processing capabilities, but there were many CGI's that were compiled programs (written in languages like C). At one point Microsoft was really pushing the idea of easily writing CGI applications in Visual Basic and hosting them with IIS.
CGI fell out of popularity in favor of embedded scripting like PHP and ASP which have much less overhead (they don't have to create a new process to service every user request and wait for it's output) and are much less complex for people to use (they don't require special directories or permissions).

Re:Replacement to DOSBox?
If you are using a 32-bit version of Vista/7 (likely if running DOS apps), just install the XP (aka XDDM model) video driver for the video card. It will disable Aero and anything that relies on WDDM acceleration, but full screen text should work again. MS official support for this workaround: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926657

Re:Are IE 7 or 8 useable?
You can try the Vista + IE8 VirtualBox images provided by Microsoft at no cost: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=21eabb90-958f-4b64-b5f1-73d0a413c8ef&displaylang=en
I use this to test websites for IE7 / IE8 under Linux. It should be used only for testing purposes. The images expire after 60 days (just re-donwnload when they expire).
You could probably get Windows to run with your license in VirtualBox too (VirtualBox is similar to Vmware, but Free Software).
Here is a short tutorial for Debian in French that you can run in google translate, though I am sure there are tons of howtos in English on the web:

Re:first side channel attack I learned
This was the first time-based side channel attack I learned. Within Minix you initially could place a password right at a page boundary and try and login. If there was a page fault before the password was rejected, you knew you had the right character right before the page bound.
That dates back before Minix - Butler Lampson's Hints for Computer System Design speaks of a similar issue in Tenex. (Look for "Tenex" in that paper for the example.)

Re:So, o/s business is pretty much past tense now
every other day, news from microsoft. none of them relate to o/ses. so what ? ms has dropped its core business ?
Win7 is still selling really well - how's that for news? But it's the boring kind of news that geeks aren't bothered about, so you don't hear much about it here.
Oh, and did you miss the recent Win7 / Win2008 R2 SP1 beta?
And it's just a tad too early for news on the next major release, given that it has only been a year since the last RTM. Give it some time to cook.

Re:Getting ready for the MS bash
Meaning that they have already got a library for this build in?
Essentially, yeah -- this kind of zooming is a built-in function of Silverlight. They call it Deep Zoom and here's a bit of an article about it with some code/markup examples linked if you're curious.
Here's another interesting example of the concept in action -- obviously you'd need Silverlight or Moonlight to view it.
None of this is anything you couldn't do with another technology -- it's just that Silverlight makes it fast/easy to throw together as a developer. I've never had a project that would make a particularly good use of this feature (or Silverlight at all, actually), but a giant map of the sky is pretty much the perfect case for it.
-
Re:Getting ready for the MS bash
Didn't they release the Feynman Lectures a while back to get people to install it? Very cool also, but a thinly veiled attempt to get people to install Silverlight.

Cool, but still some artifacts.
Well, the image is really cool, I'll give it that.
The "Quotes" from TFS are all from the author of TFA. If you want to see what the real description of the work, best look here http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/terapixel/default.aspx
There's still some artifacts left though, have a look near (seriously overexposed) Sirius for a ghost of the telescope pupil (the thing that looks like an alien solar sail) (Constellations -> Canis Major)

Re:Oh Joy! Fanboy Sales Numbers
When it's not quite enough to have a fanboy war over just your consoles... that's when it's time to bring in the fanboy and anti-fanboy wars over your source! Seriously?
I don't care about VGChartz, but what source is supposed to be more accurate? When I look at information that I quickly gathered that is either directly from the companies, or from an article citing direct information, the sales totals look to be pretty damn close to the numbers of VGCharts.
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6261400.html?tag=recent_news;title;1
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2010/jan10/01-06CESKeynote.mspx
http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps3_sale_e.htmlAre these fanboy numbers? Just who should people trust for sales numbers? I don't really care which console wins this imaginary war, but if people are making up numbers then bring in some sources to dispute then, rather than try to feel like a big boy by insulting strangers over the internet.
And who the hell cares who "wins"!? In fact, let me enlighten you a little here.
A clear winner emerging that shuts out the others is a *bad* thing for you. Competition is what drives innovation, quality, and fairness to consumers. Each of these companies brings something to the table for gamers, and each offers a choice. Without this competition, the industry would become destined for stagnation and complacency. What we have this generation are 3 consoles that all bring something to the table, and can all file a niche. This is a good thing for the industry as a whole, even if the competition isn't filling your particular niche.
Seriously, is your need to somehow have your choice in video game validated that important to you?

Might end up in job creation though MonkeeMan...
"Corporations will claim they set up security in order to save on taxes" - by Monkeedude1212 (1560403) on Monday July 12, @05:45PM (#32879486)
That's when jobs for AUDITORS come into play: In order to get the tax break bennies, they'll have to pass an audit, & that means job creation (hopefully) for all of your basic "techie-security" types that have been put out of jobs by this recession... & the ONLY WAY OUT OF THIS RECESSION IS TO CREATE DECENT PAYING LONG-TERM JOBS "for the masses" (because once you get folks spending? They're helping Peter pay Paul, who pays (insert name here)" & eventually, this comes back to YOU also).
Tools that make THIS part of the job easier?
There's automated good tools for it, like CIS Tool -> http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9018362/CIS_tool_aims_to_help_federal_agencies_check_Windows_security_settings or Microsoft's Baseline Security Analyzer 2.1 -> http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=f32921af-9dbe-4dce-889e-ecf997eb18e9&displaylang=en (for starters, @ least, for analyzing SERVERS & WORKSTATIONS - for coding practices? You need solid DBA's & coders!).
APK
P.S.=> Some companies are REAL PRICKS about this though... How do I know this? Ok:
Back in 2006, I worked for a pretty major self-insurer. I pointed out they had security issues, because I was hired to secure their code (VB.NET/ASP.NET done via Visual Studio 2005, talking to SQLServer 2005), which was all "fine & good", except their end-node points like printers & PC Workstations weren't fully secured (to the point where I found out the THEN network administrator/CIO had setup Trend Micro AntiVirus SO WRONG, it was 7++ months OUT OF DATE & not updating on workstations etc.), & more in their network itself that needed shoring up as well!
So, what happened?
Heh, they FIRED me (after I delivered 7 working programs over a 10 month period no less)... I could not believe it. Heh, they even tried to accuse me of "hacking their network" & I did NO SUCH DAMN THING (this really, REALLY pissed me off in fact). However, I pointed out, verbally to the CIO in fact, just how/where/when/why how it MIGHT happen though, but, that's NOT 'hacking/cracking' their network... far from it!
This is "how it goes" when you try to do "the right thing" & it's just pointing out that the personnel in place are either 1.) NOT DOING THEIR JOB or 2.) INCOMPETENT (take your pick)... you get "smoked" for it!
I was told "pick your battles more wisely" & I just said "this is NOT a 'battle', it's pointing out the other 1/2 of what you hired me on for, which goes BEYOND just coding & ensuring app use Stored Procedures + managed code etc.". In the end it was their loss, and the 2 guys that fired me?
They MUST have gotten "busted" for this, because they were "GONE WITH THE DAWN" shortly after I was unjustly terminated... serves those 2 bastards right, imo! apk

Re:One day...
You know, a lot of people like the movie Avatar. I think my favourite part was when the researcher with the curly hair and glasses had the interface in front of him - and he wanted to talk away and take it with him, he held up his hand to it, clenched, moved his hand to his mobile device, and sprawled it - and it came right up on the device.
We are getting so close to that cool Minority Report kind of interaction.
We've had very similar technology like that for a couple years now. Vista supported Windows SideShow which is essentially what that researcher used in the movie. The only thing we didn't have yet was control of it via gesture, though with touchscreens it could be done.

It has come to my attention that the entire Linux community is a hotbed of so called 'alternative sexuality', which includes anything from hedonistic orgies to homosexuality to paedophilia.
What better way of demonstrating this than by looking at the hidden messages contained within the names of some of Linux's most outspoken advocates:
- Linus Torvalds is an anagram of slit anus or VD 'L,' clearly referring to himself by the first initial.
- Richard M. Stallman, spokespervert for the Gaysex's Not Unusual 'movement' is an anagram of mans cram thrill ad.
- Alan Cox is barely an anagram of anal cox which is just so filthy and unchristian it unnerves me.
I'm sure that Eric S. Raymond, composer of the satanic homosexual propaganda diatribe The Cathedral and the Bizarre, is probably an anagram of something queer, but we don't need to look that far as we know he's always shoving a gun up some poor little boy's rectum. Update: Eric S. Raymond is actually an anagram for secondary rim and cord in my arse. It just goes to show you that he is indeed queer.
Update the Second: It is also documented that Evil Sicko Gaymond is responsible for a nauseating piece of code called Fetchmail, which is obviously sinister sodomite slang for 'Felch Male' -- a disgusting practise. For those not in the know, 'felching' is the act performed by two perverts wherein one sucks their own post-coital ejaculate out of the other's rectum. In fact, it appears that the dirty Linux faggots set out to undermine the good Republican institution of e-mail, turning it into 'e-male.'
As far as Richard 'Master' Stallman goes, that filthy fudge-packer was actually quoted on leftist commie propaganda site Salon.com as saying the following: 'I've been resistant to the pressure to conform in any circumstance,' he says. 'It's about being able to question conventional wisdom,' he asserts. 'I believe in love, but not monogamy,' he says plainly.
And this isn't a made up troll bullshit either! He actually stated this tripe, which makes it obvious that he is trying to politely say that he's a flaming homo slut!
Speaking about 'flaming,' who better to point out as a filthy chutney ferret than Slashdot's very own self-confessed pederast Jon Katz. Although an obvious deviant anagram cannot be found from his name, he has already confessed, nay boasted of the homosexual perversion of corrupting the innocence of young children. To quote from the article linked:
'I've got a rare kidney disease,' I told her. 'I have to go to the bathroom a lot. You can come with me if you want, but it takes a while. Is that okay with you? Do you want a note from my doctor?'
Is this why you were touching your penis in the cinema, Jon? And letting the other boys touch it too?
We should also point out that Jon Katz refers to himself as 'Slashdot's resident Gasbag.' Is there any more doubt? For those fortunate few who aren't aware of the list of homosexual terminology found inside the Linux 'Sauce Code,' a 'Gasbag' is a pervert who gains sexual gratification from having a thin straw inserted into his urethra (or to use the common parlance, 'piss-pipe'), then his homosexual lover blows firmly down the straw to inflate his scrotum. This is, of course, when he's not busy violating the dignity and co

a showstopper
Visual Studio doesn't even get told by Windows64 about some exceptions that happen - making it even impossible to debug 32 bit software on Win64. link. Obviously the Win64 people and the VisStudio people don't talk to each other

Re:Why, oh why?
The real issue is market segmentation.
That doesn't make sense at all, given that Win7 64-bit costs precisely the same as Win7 32-bit. Indeed, they both come in the same box!

Re:Why, oh why?
Modified? You mean setting the 'allow me to see more than 2GB of RAM' bit on the executable? Which they should be doing in any case so that it works better on 64-bit Windows? That sounds like lots of work.
Applications need to use the "Address Windowing Extension" API to get any real benefit from PAE.
PAE is invisible to applications, has a small performance impact in the worst case and a significant performance benefit in the best case. Microsoft just chose not to support it because they didn't want the support calls when poorly-written drivers fell over.
Which is quite reasonable, given the drivers falling over is not their fault, or problem.
PAE is a hack. The real solution is to go to x64, and the proportion of users who can't switch to x64 but would derive real benefit from PAE on Windows XP, is vanishingly small.
-
You can get 4GB+ if you really want it
There are reasons - nefarious or otherwise depending on your interpretation - but at the end of the day you can do it if you're willing to patch and install a self-signed kernel. I did it myself for Vista SP2, and it works fine. It may not work fine for you. I figured it's well worth it to get 4GB vs. 3GB without the hassle of upgrading.
-
Besides, 32-bit SHOULD be able to do 4GB
32-bit versions of Windows Server products have been able to exceed 4GB for over a decade.
The decision to limit 32-bit non-server OSes to 4GB was likely more of a marketing decision than a technical one. To be fair, implementing PAE on a consumer OS would increase the development and support costs, but I still think it's largely a marketing decision.
The 64-bit versions of Vista and later gave Microsoft an opportunity to kill off some little-used parts of Windows and it also allowed them to force device driver signing. The former saves them money directly and the latter makes Windows more secure.
By artificially giving a compelling reason to install a 64-bit OS - namely, telling people they must have 64-bits or their computer will have a fairly low maximum RAM capacity, it encourages migration.

Re:why?
There are some times when the underlying file system can matter, but the file sharing server must be aware of the limitations and deal with the problem transparently. If it doesn't, it can cause a lot of problems.
File streams are a pretty annoying problem when the underlying file system doesn't support them. Microsoft also stopped storing metadata in alternate data streams because people would copy them to file shares and would sometimes lose the ADS data. AppleShare is an even worse nightmare because many file systems strip the resource fork. Netatalk for Linux intelligently stores the streams as separate directories so they will work on file systems like ext2. Microsoft's Services for Macintosh doesn't do this kind of thing and will only work properly on NTFS which can store them directly in alternate data streams, which FAT doesn't support.
There are also various file permissions and attributes which depend on the file system. Newer versions of Windows file sharing supports NTFS style file/folder ACL's and Volume Shadow Copies which are not implemented the same on many other file systems. AppleTalk also expects all of the various bits of extra information stored on an HFS volume (like the file type and creator mappings).
It appears to me that the design and features of ZFS allow it to easily support the features of other file systems without a lot of extra work. If you had the NAS running something like ext3, I think the file servering services would probably have to do a lot more work translating those features to work correctly.

Re:It's like Office features
Not just mainframes. Windows used to support this but the feature got removed because nobody used it.

Re:How the worm turns....
They changed even faster than that. IIRC, it was Jim Allchin that said releasing the source code for a portion of Windows (the message queue), would have serious US national security implications. This was in 2002, during the post-DOJ lawsuit cleanup where some states filed a separate lawsuit.
Less that a year later in early 2003, Microsoft entered into a broad source code sharing arrangement, with Russia, China, and many NATO members.

Re:Just the opposite
What may work for you in this case is to either partition the drive or connect a separate external, then grab a copy of Microsoft SteadyState. Once you've got the thing clean (i.e. thorough scans with multiple apps, all patches installed, etc.), direct her My Documents directory to the separate drive/partion, and install SteadyState. She can install 1,001 trojans if she wants, but the cleanup process will always be the same: reboot. The computer will revert itself to its previous state, and any new data on the drive will be erased. Windows updates and most virus scanner definitions will be installed automatically, and SS has a few other options that can be used to prevent software installs and similar. I had a friend who was similarly skilled at infecting her machine, always pleading ignorance as to why she kept getting her machine infected...then I installed SteadyState and she hasn't gotten one since.
Admittedly, the only doozy is keeping non-virus scanner apps updated. Flash and similar programs need to be kept up-to-date, and the "unlock/patch/relock" process can take a bit more time and planning.

Re:If this were Windows
Microsoft has since the leak you described moved "bugward compatibility" into something called "shims". They are basically compatibility fixes that only affect specific applications, to ensure newly written apps won't run into the compatibility hacks. More info.

Re:A more appropriate quote seems to be...
A much bigger deal is being able to define generic types for primitives and user-defined value types (which Java lacks entirely), and not in the least for performance reasons.
Covariance and contravariance for generics has been in CLR since version 2.0, in fact. The problem was that the languages didn't use it, and the standard library ignored it. This changed in
.NET 4 and C# 4.It still doesn't quite cover all scenarios that Java wildcards do, though. But for those that it does cover, it's much easier to work with.

Re:Its not because its free.
Microsoft seems to make a big marketing splash on a development toolset or language or API every few years only to throw it away with the "next big thing".
One thing about MS is that the old versions of toolsets or languages don't really go away. The Win32 API, introduced in the mid-90s, still works. As does MFC, the first of three abstraction layers MS wrote for the Win32 API in C++ (the other two are ATL and WTL).
This is, of course, ignoring the STL, which is also present.
The current version of Visual Studio (2010), can be used to write applications in C# or VB.NET for
.NET 2.0 (2005), 3.0 (2007), 3.5 (2008), and 4.0 (2010). Even in .NET 4.0, I can use WinForms for the GUI, introduced back in .NET 1.0 in 2002; it hasn't been deprecated just because WPF/XAML came along. -
Re:Fine with me...
As far as I know you can use the free express editions of Visual Studio and and command line
.NET compilers with any version of Vista or Windows 7 except for Starter. The system requirements indicate that all versions of Windows XP, Vista, and 7 are supported except for starter.
Are you sure you had the compiler installed properly? I have personally compiled .NET applications on a laptop running Vista Home Basic using Visual C# Express with no problems. -
Re:A more appropriate quote seems to be...
C#/.NET gives you a good amount of control over the garbage collector such that you can explicitly force garbage collection and so forth:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.gc_members.aspx
It can also be useful to use a using block to determine the scope of an object or objects after which they will be disposed.
Funnily enough, C#/.NET require you know what you're doing too.
As is often the case, people who slag off one language/library or another do so simply because they don't know much about said language/library. If you think the
.NET library is like a wrapper around Win32 or even MFC then I'd wager you've not actually got much experience with either because the differences are vast. If anything, the .NET libraries are much closer to Java's standard libraries than anything. -
Re:A more appropriate quote seems to be...
" If Microsoft had actually open-sourced
.NET it would probably have blown Java out of the water. But they didn't and they probably won't"
Uhm. I have much of the .net framework source. You can too: http://referencesource.microsoft.com/netframework.aspx -
Re:Oh, great....
Unfortunately, nobody knows how to write code that doesn't have any bugs in it. Microsoft put a lot more effort into this than most developers do.

Re:I'll explain oppressive development environment
First of all, thank you. It's always good to hear some criticism on definite and specific issues, rather than the generic "M$ sucks".
(I am a VS developer)
Or how about, starting in either VS2005 or 2008 (can't remember which one), I opened up a project written in VC++6 and freaked when I suddenly started seeing hundred and hundreds of warnings, telling me that functions like strncat() (strncat!) were "unsafe" and I should use something like _strnscat or something like that, which supposedly was "more" safe at the cost of being totally Microsoft-specific.
It was added in VS2005, but it's not quite MS-specific. OpenWatcom also provides it out of the box, and there's a cross-platform FOSS implementation available now.
The reason why the text says that they are unsafe is because, frankly, they are - as a result of several security studies, they account for a very significant proportion of known buffer overrun vulnerabilities. Of course, it's perfectly possible to use them in a safe way, but surprisingly many people actually do... but this take has been fairly controversial, anyway, I won't deny that.
It should also be noted that this isn't actually the default for the compiler as such - if you directly do "cl.exe foo.cpp", you won't get any warnings for strcpy. It only pops up if you raise the warning level to
/W3 or higher, which is what IDE does by default for newly created C++ projects. The text of the warning also clearly states what to do to get rid of it:warning C4996: 'strcpy': This function or variable may be unsafe. Consider using strcpy_s instead. To disable deprecation, use CRT_SECURE_NO_WARNINGS. See online help for details.
When you refer to it being per-project, do you imply that it was inconvenient to add the define to all the numerous projects you've had in the solution?
How about the auto-hide windows that seem to randomly decide to suddenly be pinned or to suddenly appear during unrelated actions?
Tool windows in VS have different and separate settings depending on which mode you're in - aside from the default one which you get on normal VS start and/or project open, debugging is a separate mode, and opening VS with a single file (aka "simple editing") is yet another. This is somewhat similar to Eclipse perspectives.
If you pinned a toolwindow in one of those modes, it will not be pinned in other modes. The idea is that you generally want different toolwindow configurations depending on activity - e.g. you might want Breakpoints window to be set to auto-hide during normal editing, but pinned in debugging. So you will, at most, need to pin the window in all modes in which you've made it visible, and most likely, you'll be dealing with just the default mode and the debugging one.
If you experience random pinning/unpinning that cannot be explained by the above, then please describe the scenario under which it happens - which toolwindow, what were you doing when it got unpinned, etc. Better yet, do it in a bug tracker.
When working with C#, the compiler and editor will give you a red squiggle under code it can't compile, but gives you know way to know where or how many places in the file they are
If you open the Error tool window (which will happen after the first build, but you can do it manually), it will list all IntelliSense errors just as if they were compiler errors, so you can see the error descriptions, and double-click to jump to location. By the way, this (as well as squiggles themselves) also works for C++ in VS2010.
If you want margin markers as in Eclipse, you can

Re:Fine with me...
This comes up on every Slashdot article even vaguely related to Microsoft, Express Editions are free, dumbass.
And every time it comes up, some "dumbass" is there to parrot the "VS Express is free!" line. Express editions are so crippled as to be useless for professional work (no add-ins? Really?). The minimum SKU that allows me to get anything useful done is Pro, which is something like US$750 last I looked. Whereas Xcode, a full-blown dev environment with all the tools you need for professional work, comes on the OS installation disk with every Mac.
You need an Apple computer for the iPhone SDK. How much is the cheapest new Apple computer?
My first iPhone app was released to the app store from a US$350 MSI Wind netbook that I hackintoshed. Not my top recommendation for a dev machine, but it got the job done as Xcode seems to go easy on resources. You're not going to be running VS2010 on a netbook.
You may also note that you'll need a computer to run Visual Studio. I'm not sure what point you're driving at here.

Re:Collegerial influence
Maybe I just been coding too much lately but I never cared what platform I must code. Be it Qt, MFC, DCOM, you name it, heck, even raw Win32 API, I never cared. Never understood why people FUD so much Microsoft.
Microsoft tries pretty hard to keep us out from under the hood of their software, so it's only natural that big learning institutions would turn to more open software for education purposes.
Ladies and gentleman, I present you the Windows Research Kernel: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/sharedsource/windowsacademic/researchkernelkit.mspx. Good enough for you?
Microsoft in some way provides more interesting ways to learn about system internals than Linux. Especially having readable documentation and newbie friendly forums (here). OSS documentation is often out-of-date and a lot of foruns and mailing lists are hostiles to "outsiders".
Stop the FUD, shut up and code.

Re:Fine with me...
at least Ballmer doesn't tell me I can't compile my code without forking him $100/yr
Of course, staying up to date with Visual Studio is going to cost you significantly more than that (unless you use the same version for 8 years).
Not if you take advantage of the free Express Editions which are mentioned on a nearly daily basis here on Slashdot, of course.
-
Re:Even Worse With Windows Mobile
This has changed for Windows Phone 7 - there is a free VS Express edition for that.

Re:Fine with me...
No, he tells you you can't compile your code without forking him [sic] $550 in the first year and requiring an additional $500 for upgrades every 2 or 3 years. That's way cheaper!
