Better link on the DC-3 incident.
Can't seem to find a good article on that on wikipedia (which is odd), but here'a decent recap from Report on downed DC-3 complete.
"The DC-3 took off from Bromma on the morning of 13 June 1952. The National Defence Radio Establishment (FRA) had assigned the aircraft to monitor a large Soviet naval exercise.
A few hours after take off, a telegraph operator at Roslagen's wing in Hägernäs received a call from the aircraft. Contact suddenly disappeared and nothing more was heard. The DC-3 had been shot down by a Soviet fighter aircraft east of Gotska Sandön."

Re:Peep? Not so.. pretty loud buzz more like it.
"Last, the reason behind the calling the defense for defense and not military is that the law forbid the Swedish military to perform any aggression. Even on the order from the riksdagen. The purpose of the military in Sweden is strictly defense and hence it is called Försvarsmakten."
The official translation of Försvarsmakten is "Swedish Armed Forces" though. See: http://www2.mil.se/en -
Re:This is very handy
the SR-71 [...] was never successfully engaged by SAMs (or anything else, for that matter).
I love the SR-71. Really, I do. It's in my eyes the most beautiful aircraft ever. While the Swedish airforce never engaged the SR-71 for obvious reasons, they managed to intercept (and get missile lock on) it a number of times with the Viggen aircraft and, had the situation been different, could have engaged it. See for instance this post corroborated by the Swedish Air Force's own magazine here (pdf in swedish).
To the Blackbird's defense, it was slowing down to about Mach 2.5 over Sweden before punching it over the Baltic, and it flew right at the edge of the Viggen's flight envelope, but still it's an impressive feat. -
Re:Revolution
Yeah, we have "hemvärnet" aswell, althought I have no idea how large any of our military stuff is nowadays. I think we are down to little over 200 airplanes to begin with.
The swedish defence whatever informs me that Hemvärnet got around 40.000 people of which 1.500 is musicans ;)
Well, atleast our subs kicks american ass ;/ -
Re:Bush and I'm not afraid to admit it.
Sweden is neutral and it doesn't have any standing army
Mr President, you are confusing Sweden with Switzerland again. Sweden does have a military, and they are even helping out in Afghanistan.
To be fair to Bush, once someone told him that Sweden does have an army, he did admit it. But why didn't someone tell him he was wrong right away? -
Not the first Swedish Stealth-ship.. pics!
1986, designstart of "Smyge", publically showned in 1991. it was a testbed/prototype and a smaller littorial craft.
U.S Secretary of Defense William Cohen was demonstrated to it in 1997.

1996, designstart of the Visby class... as of 2004 two of these ships have been delivered, the HMS Visby (2001) and HMS Helsingborg (2003). after 2 years of sea trials they are ready to enter full service.

Re:Been there done that!So what makes this Swedish ship "first stealth-ship", when there are already stealth-ships in use in Finland?
I'm sorry, we just couldn't find the Finnish ships to report about them. I know they're around here somewhere...
Seriously, there have been stealthy ships before, but the Visby-class is the first of a new generation.

All over the place might be stretching the truth a bit. Some relevant info from Swedint

Swedish Army
Last time I served in it, the Armed Forces of Sweden were still running SCO Unix for a lot of communications control computers. The systems were very buggy and would often crash. When I left they were just starting to migrate over to (customized) FreeBSD boxes and Windows NT. Now, knowing the Swedish army, I know they are NOT an organization that changes it ways unless it desperately has to (despite what their PR keeps saying). So if they're dropping SCO
.. well .. I used their old systems myself, so I know pretty well how much they suck. It's all over for SCO. When all the legal bullshit is done and over with, there'll be nothing but bones left, and maybe the world will be rid of the horror that is UnixWare. -

Re:How's it compare to Sea Shadow? + linksSea shadow is a experimental ship where the goal was to see how "stealth" a ship could become (radar, sonar, wake and thermal), it's not in production.. there are more sealth ships in the world than Sea Shadow and this russian vessel. you've got frances la fayette(or something), swedens visby class they've also got a smaller stealth vessel, Norways skjold (bottom of page, sorry only in norwegian),50kn, wich the US is considering to buy.
and to the one who talked about seeing the ship from space: good luck targeting those missiles, on a moving target, with images from space.
