Re:Oh look, we killed it, let's try *squeezing*
I have, I could list them. Nothing I play right now is what I would call a AAA title.
My favorites:
Weird Worlds, distributed by Shrapnel Games. Basic, top down Star Control IIish space combat and exploration game. $24.95
Cave Story (Doukutsu Monogatari). Free.
Anything over at Spiderweb games. Gog.com hooked me up with a strange little game called "Evil Genius" for $9.99. You have to hack the widescreen in, but it's a surprising lot of fun.
There are so many options, and I would dearly like to see AAA publishers die so they would have more room to flourish.

Re:Shenanigans
Add Cave Story (2004) to that list. It's one of the only good recent 2D platformers I've seen that is NOT based off an old platformer.

Re:What's the real reason?
Sorry to reply to myself, but I had to say:
Play Cave Story( http://www.miraigamer.net/cavestory/ ). It's free and it's about 100x more fun than Braid. It actually has replayability too.

Re:The Pandora
Before I rattle off a couple I have to point out some things. First a lot of the must-haves are actually ports, but they look awesome on the 320x240 screen and play better on buttons + d-pad than computer keyboard. Cave Story is one example. Ur-Quan masters is another. Second, very little software outside of the emulators is gp2x-only because (a) most of it is done with SDL and the authors typically often PC versions as well, (b) some of it has been ported from the predecessor unit, GP32. But there's quite a large library of gp2x-only software, and much of it is very good. My favorites include games called Reword (anagram game), Ghostpix (picross game), Sqdef (tower defense game). Those three are puzzle & strategy games but there are many more in all genres. The crown jewel of GP2X exclusives was probably Wind and Water: The Puzzle Battles. But the creators have ported it to Dreamcast now, and there are rumors of a possible Pandora port. An incredible and highly original puzzle game with lots of sexy pixel art and good original music.

Misleading Title...
Not all of these games were released in the past year. La Mulana was released in 2005 and Lyle In Cube Sector, 2006. And since this seems to be a compilation of some of the best freeware games released on the Windows platform I'm surprised there's no mention of the epitome of freeware, non-linear adventure/platformers:
Cave Story
http://www.miraigamer.net/cavestory/
The game is so popular it has a dedicated modding community and has had official and non-official ports of it made for portable platforms. The non-official port was for the PSP. To the Cave Story community and the Author's horror, some company was actually trying to sell the game as their own work. -
Re:Drama and Design...Twilight Princess was the first Zelda that made me cry (possibly the first GAME that made me tear up).
You need to check out FF6 or FF7. FF7 holds the place in my heart as one of the best games of all time. Definitely most emotionally engaging.
That and maybe Cave story. -
Re:Use lower overhead and release anyway
Yea, or Cave story by Doukutsu Monogatari. One of the best games I've ever played. Quality story line, classic graphics, and its free!
