6-port ethernet cards + 7 slot motherboard = 42
Silicom http://www.silicom-usa.com/ has 6 port gigabit cards in PCI-E (PCI Express) and PCI-X variants. Try to find a motherboard with as many PCI-X slots and PCI-E slots that are x4 or greater; the cards do not fit in PCI-E x1 slots. You may not find a motherboard with enough slots, or enough fast slots. Most motherboards now come with 2 on-board ethernet ports which will help. And if you find you need more cards in your 'switch' then try this PCI expansion System I found online: http://www.mobl.com/expansion/products/pcie_expan
s ion/6slot/index.html it only needs one PCI-E x4 slot on your motherboard and it gives you 6 PCI-X slots -
This is my retro side talking...
Have you noticed a distinct lack of USB 5.25" drives? I'm fine with a wall wart for power, but nobody even makes a USB floppy controller chip that recognizes 360k as a valid format. (There's one that'll do 1.2MB, but not 360k.)
I've been encouraging Jens Schoenfeld to make a USB Catweasel controller for those of us without PCI slots. I suppose it's probably easier to put PCI slots on a laptop, though.
Perhaps I'm just in it for the absurdity factor. -
Re:thanks + more info - reqs and specs
Have you looked at expansion hardware like that made by Magma http://www.mobl.com/expansion/
They have a product line that allows an external PCI card to be attached to a notebook.
Some compatability testing is required because not all cards will work properly. -

Excellent, but one problem...
The one PCI slot is 32bit 66MHz.
How to use Magma PCI extension to full performance capacity? It's always the little product omissions that are the most debate. Still, a great product. A great cluster! -
cardbus-pci enclosures
http://www.mobl.com/expansion/pci/index.html cardbus to pci enclosures, everything you need. 1 caveat: some (newer) bus-mastering pci cards dont take too kindly to multiple bridging as used in these types of boxes. other than that they should cover you fine

Re:Err you aren't trying hard enough.
So, if you'll be first in line to have a solution with 10 video cards, I guess you'll jump to buy one of Magma's PCI extension. The 7-ports extension cost just above 1000$, fill it with Radeon9200 (70 each), use the AGP port and 2 PCI slot of your main motherboard and you'll be fine.
