Re:Missing a lot of history
"So thats the precursor to the Wolf3d engine in a better games, with graphics done by Adrian Carmack (not relation to John) who later joined the iD crew. The same engine that was use in earlier iD game Catacomb 3D."
Catacomb Abyss was released AFTER Wolf3D(november 1991 )and used a licenced and somewhat modified Wolfenstein 3D engine, so to say it came before Wolf3D is wrong. :) -
Re:Flame throwers, right on.
What about... RISE OF THE TRIADS!?!?!!!?
As far as I know, there were more different ways to incinerate your enimies than any other FPS out there :)
Hehe.. does anybody remember the bounce pads? 'Hand of god'? ''shrooms mode'?!?!?!?!

At the time, was there anything even remotely as funny? -
Does anyone remember Captain Blood?Been there, and done that in 1987. It was a cool game with 32768 unique plaents... with terrain to fly thru... Hell it even ran on a C64!
But for some reason the computer industry seems to belive that if there has been a lapse for 10 years, the next sucessor is suddelny 'new'.

Teach 'em to be Geeks!
Robot Odyssey was a good educational game that gave the basics of designing circuits and logic using your various logic gates, flip-flops, etc. It gets very involved and awfully difficult near the end-levels.
I imagine just about any sports based game (other than the obvious wrestling/rugby) would work for meeting the non-violent criteria.
You might also consider the various Play by Mail games out there - especially those that have regular turns run. This also gives added negotiating power - do the homework, get to see their next turn, etc. Of course, that requires net access.

Re:bahahaCivNet was released in 1995. That was the first multiplayer Civilization.
In other news, Civilization 3 is due October 17.
It is true that FreeCiv is more a clone of Civilization II than Civilization I these days, but it still hasn't really hit that mark yet. Certainly not in the AI.

This is just like Tomb Raider...
first was the game, then will (?) be the movie... Game is one of the best adventure games out there, but the movie... I don't know yet

Already done!
SimHealth by Maxis (in 1994, before they sold their soul to EA) probably came the closest to creating a SimPolitics. SimHealth starts in 1992 and gives you 8 years to fix the health care system in the United States. It was a very, very hard game simply because every decision made always later seemed to be the wrong one. Juggling public opinion, political pressure, personal conviction, and logistics was nightmarishly hard in that game. Much of the seeming futility in the game gave light to the madness of politics.
In the beginning you must choose your personal values from a series of diamond-shaped sliders and then foray through a maze of proposals and ideas to actually fulfill what you personally believe in. It's much harder than you would ever dream, and the difficult nature of this so-called game probably limited its popularity, as its one of the least known (and least-liked!) Sim games. I bought it for $10 in 1996 or so when Maxis sold out to EA, and it's no longer available.

Do YOU have a 3-digit slashdot UID? -
Familiarity... AutoDuel
Ah, Lord British... there's a name that brings me back. Not that I played any of the games mentioned thus far.
I remember his name from AutoDuel (a bit more info), a conversion for the Apple ][ (well, the one I played) by Lord British and Chuckles from the Steve Jackson Games PnP game Car Wars.
Why do I mention this? Becuase AutoDuel was the greatest game of all time. It was Road Warrior meets the eastern seaboard, and was great fun. Of course, my original 5.25" disks got corrupted, but I still have it on an Apple ][ emulator. I don't play much anymore, but it was a fantastic game.
I thought there were plans to make an updated version... did anyone hear anything about that? This was a few years ago. Google hasn't turned up much...

Is speed a concern?
We implemented MobyGames in PHP3 at first, but it became very apparent that, with our multiple queries and data integrity checks, it wasn't going to cut the mustard. (PHP4 may solve these problems if it avoids having to compile/interpret code every single page load, but I haven't tried it, so you should.)
We ended up rewriting the project in modperl and we quadrupled our speed. -
Don't forget...Some of the best demos of yesteryear were programmed on hardware of this vintage. As my friend Trixter used to say, "A 386 can run Windows 95. A 286 makes for a great spreadsheet. You can even browse the web with an old PC. And the games - - oh, the games are much, much better than you remember them."
You can check out those old games at MobyGames.

But what did you all think of the *game?*
Could everyone go over to MobyGames and slashdot-effect the hell out of it? I'm curious to see what everyone thinks of the actual original Wing Commander--the PC game from 1990. Give it a rating if you have the 10 seconds it takes to do so...

This has got to be a sign of the apocalypse.
If a lame website can go from a "script-kiddie mentality" warez/filez/mp3z site to having $11 million in venture capital and the ability to go public in less than 18 months, then surely Armageddon must be upon us. This is so wrong.
Geezus. Sites like that give legitimate projects a bad name.
