Thank you Google! This is badly needed because the Unicode Consortium screwed up Asian language support badly. The problem started when a bunch of Silicon Valley WASPS got together and formed the Unicode Consortium. Their experts were a joke. They had a foreign language expert who by his own admission couldn't speak the language he was supposedly expert it.

Then without consulting Asian language speakers they decided to combine all the Asian language characters - including those that were physically different.The result was like some elitist looking at the Greek and Roman alphabets and deciding 'a' is a lot like alpha, 'b' a lot like beta, so why not comine the two of them into a single alphabet, then tell you your name isn't Sam, it's "S". (Slashdot probably won't display this but you get the idea.) This affected eastern and central and south east asian languages.

When it was pointed out did the Unicode Consortium admit they fucked up and fix it? Nope. They dug in their heels and insisted each country produce their own font which would display each Unicode character differently to suit their own language. There are other problems too: The encoding the consortium expected makes asian codepages use more space than the standards they were supposed to replace. This was stupid since ASCII was already super efficient for English language, so what was the point?

If you only write English language software and ASCII is good enough you won't notice any of this but if you have to write International software it's a nightmare. Yes, you might think adding Unicode support allows any your app to run in any language, but it doesn't work like that because of this clusterfuck. You still have to provide different fonts for different countries, and you often have to provide support for old codepages (the various BIG5 variants) for fallback which Unicode was supposed to replace. It also makes translation very hard.

No evidence, mobbing tactics, public shaming, threatening people who question the narrative, and demanding reparations for perceived slights in the form of policy changes and increased decision making power to their political allies. If there are actual allegations, they need to be taken to a court of law. By "mobile device" you can't mean a PlayStation Vita, because that's not something that "[p]ractically everyone has". This means you probably mean a touch-controlled device running iOS or Android. One problem with these platforms is that game developers can't rely on the player owning a clip-on gamepad, in turn because the makers of said gamepads appear not to publish sales figures. So games that aren't already point-and-click have to be dumbed down to use touch control, which turns platformers into endless runners. And in part because Android devices reached some countries before Google payment processing did, the mobile audience has developed an expectation of "free to play". But the other side of the coin is people feel they have a right to a "safe space" and should never have to see/hear anything that's only offensive to them personally, then going after people that fall somewhere in between for not complying 100%.

The issue with the CoCs that have been being forced lately is a result of people wanting tools in place to go after those that disagree ideologically and/or politically with issues that aren't even part of a dev project. See the Opal disaster the AC below linked. It's incredibly underhanded because the communities don't even get a chance to have a say. The CoC is introduced, discussed and merged into a project in less than a day before anyone, that doesn't know it's being talked about, can have any input.

This plays into fears the "SJWs" are coming, which fuels the the freeze peachers into asserting they still have support. Us moderates in the middle are just like, "why do I have to pick one or the other?"

I fully support people's right to say what they want, but also agree that needs to be tempered with some common sense. If you act like an asshole people aren't going to want to deal with you, and you can't force them too.

I have no issue with a CoC, but why are they even necessary? Can't we just look at someone that's being an ass on a project and all agree they're being an ass and we don't want to work with them? Or if you're an individual that doesn't get along with someone, just don't work with them? It feels like people are only pushing CoCs so they, as an individual, can personally decide who to oust. Even if no one else sees an issue with the person being attacked. The CoC just puts tools on the table so the first one to accuse wins, that's kind of the opposite of a safe space. What's worse is when you look at the people proposing the CoCs THEY ARE THE ABUSERS! They're the worse people to be arguing for tools to hold people responsible for actions outside of dev projects. Hell just look up "Coraline Ada" who after pushing the CoC for the Opal project went to twitter to drum up a mob of people to attack the project to force them into accepting her CoC or "Randi Harper" (FreeBSD) who harassed Roberto Rosario out his board position with the IGDA and then proceeded to harass members of the FreeBSD community after pushing to have a CoC along with many other people. She harasses ANNE QUEEN OF VAMPIRES RICE for god's sake.

TL;DR - People on both sides, overly offensive and overly offended, are a menaces and justify then feed each others existence.
