Firefox + Adblock + Adblock Filterset.G Updater
I recommend to all of my friends who use Firefox (and, for those that don't use Firefox, I continue to recommend Firefox) to also use the AdBlock extension. Adblock allows you to filter out page elements based on pattern matched URLs.
With Adblock, comes Adblock Filterset.G Updater. From the info page of the updater: "This extension automatically downloads the latest version of Filterset.G every 4-7 days. Filterset.G is an excellent set of filters maintained by G for Adblock that blocks most ads on the internet."
With these two extensions, I rarely ever see any advertisements on any site.
To combat the annoying Flash-verts, I use Flashblock. This replaces Flash movies with a button that you can click on to view it.
Three wonderful extensions, things you don't have in Internet Explorer, that's for sure. -

Re:I think you're missing something.
It could be the folks at the Firemonger Project are also missing something.

NoScript (NO)
Tabbrowser Preferences (yes)
Adblock (yes)
Forecastfox (yes)
IE View (yes)

Please DON'T spam the bug
I should have said:
Please don't comment on the bug unless you have something *constructive* to add. It already has 84 comments - more complaints won't help get this fixed, they'll just make it even more unreadable. (If you feel the need, vote for the bug, but don't spam it with complaints.)

Re:UNSUPPORTED?
for apple.com/trailers: Use the firefox "Media Player Connectivity" plugin for Firefox. It takes an inline, plugin requiring piece of media like a quicktime, WMV, avi or mpeg, and turns replaces the space on that page with a nice button to click on that launches the media player you choose to handle that format in a separate window. Or you can set it up to just let you right click and download the movie. Click here.
As for this little piece of stupidity called .viv, I don't think there is a current easy solution... -
Re:Copy & Paste sorted?
This has been an issue for some time, well before 1.0 was ever released.

ChangelogWhat's new in Firefox 1.5 Beta 2
This page lists the improvements in Firefox 1.5 Beta 2 over Firefox 1.5 Beta 1. Last updated October 6, 2005.
New browser features
- 235204 - Web Search (Ctrl+K, etc) should show a search dialog when search bar is disabled.
- 296827 - Dragging text into the Find text box does not enable search buttons or initiate search.
- 309860 - Dragging a URL to the tab strip should respect the Shift key (use Shift to control whether the new tab is selected immediately).
- 303279 - Safe Mode: Use "safe" localstore.
- 304403 - Safe Mode: Better UE.
- 283598 - [Mac] New
.dmg artwork with diagrammatic instructions.
New web developer features
- 309242 - E4X should be on by default, while preserving the comment hiding hack. (Specify e4x=1 or JavaScript 1.6 if you want to include XML comment literals.)
- 302462 - Support
:valid, :invalid, :out-of-range, and :in-range pseudo-classes. - 84400 - Support
:disabled and :enabled pseudo-classes.
New extension developer features
- 303727 - Supply a supported way to access the nsIEditor of HTML input/textarea.
- 310976 - Treat 1.5.* as 1.5.infinity.

- 295074 - POST responses remain in the memory cache when using XMLHttpRequest.
- Back/Forward cache (fastback)
- Windows-specific bugs
- 310957 - Switch Win32 SVG renderer from GDI+ to cairo. (This improves cross-platform consistency of SVG rendering and eliminates the requirement for Windows 98 users to download gdiplus.dll before they can see SVG content.)

Re:Crahes...alot
Well, duh, it's still in beta, it's bound to have bugs. Instead of whining about it here, go to https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ and tell them the steps that you went through that lead to the crash. Just some advice before going over there, don't just whine about it like you did over here, otherwise they will just simply write you off and do absolutely nothing about it and/or tell you "You have access to the source code, why don't you go in and fix the bug yourself"

Re:newsreader?
Is Mozilla's usnet news reader being updated at all?
Yeah, the Mozilla Corpor^WFoundation has made it a policy to allow the suite to wither and die. Fortunately the Seamonkey folks will take over and update it, including the newsreader. So I guess you could wait until Seamonkey comes out of alpha or just use the bloated, overrated Thunderbird instead. -
Source code?
Why isn't the source tarball available? I'd rather compile my own to avoid SVG bloat and to turn on spatial navigation.

Killing Karma...
I have a topic to debate, Standards.
If Firefox does get "Standards" in place, what really makes them good at all? This point is not made out of ignorance, but true question.
Firefox proposes that everyone adhere to the Standards of the W3, but say Safari and IE decide, "Ok, let's do it." Then what really sets any of them apart (other than Safari being Mac only)?
Because if it just comes down to a secure and fast browser, MS has much more money and resources to make this come true than FF, I believe, let me know where I'm wrong.
And furthermore, not even FF adheres only to the standards, as outlined in the paragraph that speaks of the w3 (do a find for 'w3') ---> Standards?
My favorite quote on there is: "Keep in mind that this is not yet part of any W3C or other official standard. At this time it is necessary to bend the rules in order to have full keyboard accessibility."
But isn't this what MS did long ago to make the better browser experience over NS?
Anyway, I don't mean to trash on FF at all, but I just wonder, who really wants the Standards implemented (I actually do), and then what happens after that? How do we get better dev tools and code to use in our web-apps (the w3 doesn't seem on top of new tech)? -
Re:more competition should be a good thing, I hope

If you have Sun Java installed and properly configured, click here to launch ICEBrowser. You might be surprised at its speed.
3) Can you imagine a JVM interpreting javascript?? We're talking slow.
You might want to pass that on to the Mozilla guys. I think they're still under the impression that they wrote a fast engine to do JavaScript in Java.
Discover the beauty of gcc+(wxWindows|GTK+) and build accordingly.
Oh, My Eyes! MY EYES! (I kid, I kid!) -
MPL infringement?
I smell imminent, blatant MPL infringement--unless, they are writing their own code to interpret the xpis (and perhaps ActiveX too, if they want some bizarre sort of extra credit or something).
If they do use Mozilla code, certainly they should have the source code available, as per the MPL, Section 3.6, no? Unless Flock has balls of Fire-proof steel and considers such a license naïve and unconstitutional like SCO or something...

Bugzilla real problemNobody needs a new bugzilla client. The main problem of bugzilla is that developers either:
1. ignore posted bugs.
2. expire posted bugs without reviewing (for example mozilla.org does this) Personally I would never post any bug report to mozilla.org after receiveing this automatically generated offensive message on my detailed bug report with test case.
This way they will lose all serious reporters. After posting first bug people would lose any interest communicating with their stupid robot.
Remember, almost everything posted to bugzilla.mozilla.org would be never reviewed by anyone. Posting to bugzilla.mozilla.org is just a waste of time.

Did anybody notice the trademark claims???I went to the screenshot page (http://deskzilla.com/shots.html) and scrolled to the very bottom, where it says:
Copyright © ALM Works Ltd 2004-2005 Deskzilla is not related in any way to Mozilla Organization or its employees. Bugzilla and Mozilla are trademarks owned by Netscape Communications Corporation.
Naturally, I double checked on that one over at Mozilla (http://www.mozilla.org/foundation/trademarks/faq. html) and found:The Mozilla trademarks include, among others, the names Mozilla(TM), mozilla.org®, Firefox®, Thunderbird(TM), Bugzilla(TM), Camino(TM), Sunbird(TM) and Seamonkey(TM), as well as the Mozilla logo, Firefox logo, Thunderbird logo and the red lizard logo.
So, what gives? Surely these Deskzilla guys should have figured that one out! -
Re:resizing screen images.
Well, that was news to me. X.org thinks this is a 75dpi display but my plastic ruler reveals that this really is a 120dpi display.
Now I only need to know how to change it. The graphic administration trools naturally provide no tools for this. A quick search reveals this page: http://www.mozilla.org/unix/dpi.html.
When that information is adapted to Fedora Core 3, all it takes is adding argument "-dpi 120" to
/etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf:[server-Standard]
name=Standard server
command=/usr/X11R6/bin/X -dpi 120 -audit 0
Of course, the Ajax calendar mentioned in the article still only shows the top half of the text in the week-display, but at least the input fields work correctly...
Thanks.

I mean, there exist many fast IMAP clients. Certainly Pine is fast, some (e.g. myself) find it very convenient, and it should be easy to recompile for OS X. It is not free software though.
More seriously, today's software market is such that selling a small app for money is not likely to be profitable. Too many people will write email clients, editors, OS kernels
... and give them away at no cost ("free as in beer"). Most of that software is actually Free Software (TM), but that's beside the point here. This is not dissimilar from the period in the 80s and early 90s when anytime someone would start selling a nice utility Microsoft would bundle similar functionality into DOS or Windows (anyone remember SideKick?). Today that means taht if your piece of software does something not too complicated, and many people would like to have this functionality, then someone will develop a free alternative. When it comes to web-browsing or e-mail reading, you have to content with massive efforts like the , which is even worse. This is not to say there's room for commercial software today -- but it's in a different market. Since the cost of distributing software is now about zero, and the cost of writing it is effectively small (in the sense that many projects find many people are willing to donate their effots), to charge for software it must embody something more -- some kind of expensive research or expertise that is difficult to duplicate in a community project.
For example, GCC is a great cross-platform compiler, but if you need a good optimizing compiler you will pay for the real thing: 's ICC, or Sun's compilers. In a different field, there is little competition for AutoCAD.

Re:Combine with Firefox?
What you're looking for is SeaMonkey. Email + Web browser integrated with all the new features of Firefox and Thunderbird (including the 1.5 branches), and it only uses half the memory of the two. I've found it to load much faster than Firefox on my FreeBSD system, and it's more responsive.

Or you can use SeaMonkey
Or you could use SeaMonkey. I mean, if you're going to be using Firefox + Thunderbird, you might as well download the suite, which uses less hard drive space and memory. The mail client has had inline spellchecking for a while, virtual folders, and warns you if it thinks a message is a scam. It's at least worth checking out.

Integration with Firefox?
I'll bet your Eudora Pro 3.0.5 doesn't integrate well with Mozilla Firefox, does it? Can you use the same theme as Firefox to have a consistent looking environment? No. Can you EVEN theme Eudora Pro? No. Plus, Thunderbird and Firefox are both open source, so I'm free to hack it if I want. But I don't need to because the two are already perfect. Well I'd like to see the two integrated better, but that's just me. Plus it's free. You're Eudora Pro is being left behind the new wave of open source software. Join the Mozilla team today! http://www.mozilla.org/ and give Firefox and Thunderbird a spin. You won't be able to go back to IE and Eudora.
