Re:Hear hear!
You can do that with Firefox by creating a new profile. I have my Profile folder in a FAT partition so I can use the same Bookmarks / cookies under Linux and Windows.

Re:Name one platform Firefox doesn't suck on.
It is unclear from your post whether or not you are still using Firefox, but if you are then you should be very interested in the Single Window extension, which can trap all new window requests to new tabs. I apologize if you already knew about this, no longer use Firefox, and/or are annoyed by yet another extension-based fix instead of built-in functionality.

Why not update the slashdot news?
It's clear that the author of this "news" didnt bother to check if an upgrade was available before posting about this.
I think this is both unfair to Mozilla as to GreaseMonkey.
Please update the news as you do other times to say that users can update their GreaseMonkey installation to avoid this bug.

Try Bugroff License - It's simpler...The "No problem Bugroff" license.
Richard Stallman of the Free Software Foundation devised, in addition to some marvelous software, the GNU General Public License (GPL for short). Or the CopyLeft it is sometimes called.
It is quite a revolutionary document, using the "copyright" tool to to protect your right to use free software.
Unfortunately using copyright to protect free software is a lot like using a Jackal to guard the hens.
In fact, various inconveniences relating to this have resulted in modifications such as the LGPL (Library General Public License) and more recently the NPL (Netscape Public License)
I call these matters mere inconveniences, the real damage will occur when the Jackal's, (sorry, I mean lawyers), actually get to test the GPL in court for the first time.
Thus enter my version.
Its very simple.
Entirely consistent.
Completely unrestrictive.
Easy to apply.
The "No problem Bugroff" license is as follows...
The answer to any and every question relating to the copyright, patents, legal issues of Bugroff licensed software is....
Sure, No problem. Don't worry, be happy. Now bugger off.
All portions of this license are important..
- "Sure, no problem." Gives you complete freedom. I mean it. Utterly complete. A bit of a joke really. You have complete freedom anyway.
- "Don't worry, be happy." Apart from being good advice and a
good song, it also says
:- No matter what anyone else says or does, you still have complete freedom. - Now bugger off. The only way to get rid of pushy Jackals is to ignore them and not feed them. The GPL is just begging somebody to take it to court. Can't you just see it. Exactly the same thing that happened when some twit (not Linus) registered Linux as his own personal trademark. People got upset, started a fund, and hired, off all ruddy things, a Jackal to try and defend the chicken! Who really benefits from this trademark / patent / copyright thing anyway? The lawyers. Who made it up in the first place? The lawyers.
OK so the last part of the license sounds a bit harsh, but seriously folks, if you are a
:-- Lawyer asking these legalese questions... You should go off and learn an honest trade that will actually contribute to life instead of draining it.
- Programmer asking these legalese questions... You have amazingly powerful tools in your hands and mind, use them to ask and answer the worthwhile questions of life, the universe and everything. Stop mucking about with such legal nonsense and get back to programming.
- User/reader asking these question... Don't worry. Go off and be happy. Have fun. Enjoy what has been created for you.

Re:Security
Wow, you are so completely wrong on a number of counts.
First, It takes the mozilla team an average of 2 MONTHS to fix security issues, not the "same day". Further, The vast majority of IE vulnerabilities happened before Firefox even reached release candidate stage.
For example, FF 1.05 patches 12 vulnerabilities. The oldest from April, the newest from late May based on the creation date of the referenced bugzilla reports.
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/known-vul nerabilities.html#Firefox
Firefox has had 56 publicly announced vulnerabilities this year. 24 of them of High or Critical severity.

It's also now availble via Firefox's update feature. Here's the page on addons.mozilla.org . Unfortunately, they seem to be having some problems

Good, but......you failed to clarify that the Urchin in question isn't just a random guttersnipe, but actually one of a number that the benevolent Mozilla Society Representative gives lodgings to in his gruel-serving workhouse.

Fixed?
According to Firefox extensions site, you need to "uninstall or upgrade now." The post is from today.

Re:Why my FF 1.0.4
If it's anything like mine, you might have a localised version installed.
I have the Windows version for British English (yes, it's different from American English) and when I visit the Firefox home page, I am presented with two download options.
1. 1.0.5 American
2. 1.0.4 British
I guess your localised version isn't updated yet.
Why not take a look?
(I've now decided to suck up the bad spelling and use the US version, just to keep up with updates).

Re:Built in
You're asking, "Why don't more people use the HOSTS file for something it was never intended for"? HOSTS is an old, OLD file used in the win95 (and earlier as LMHOSTS) networking. It's a way to find devices on the network without NetBEUI or Active Directory or DNS. It's meant to hold 10 entries or so. Not thousands. It Severely slows down the millions of W2k boxes out there? (read near bottom) Why not use the free WebWasher to block ALL ads, not just the ones on your list? Why not use Firefox to prevent all the nasties from being installed?

Re:On Laptops, Put the Processor Elsewhere
Also, for software, have it so that you can save your workspace.
Good thinking. A few open-source teams out there share your vision. The Gnome desktop can remember all the programs you have open when you log out (tell it in the Sessions preferences to auto-save if you do this a lot). The Session Saver extension for Mozilla Firefox does this for web pages. We're getting there :) -

That was until now. If we all add this to userContent.css he can go back to his previous job:
iframe[src*="googlesyndication.com"] { display: none !important; }
If you don't want to see similar stuff on Slashdot, just do enter this:
iframe[src*="googlesyndication.com"], iframe[src*="industrybrains.com"] { display: none !important; }
I think this explains why I post this as AC. Further reading: Blocking Advertisement.

Re:Sssshhhh!
No worries... one or two people can't make very much of a difference. Which is sad, really. There's free solutions out there to solve people's problems, but it doesn't really matter unless there's an organization who can throw money into advertising. That just goes to show you how far the internet is from truly enabling a collective human intelligence. We can do it now, communications are essentially free, we just need the right social structures. The bloggers could do it, but I don't think they're doing their job properly. I fault the mainstream bloggers for the spyware mess we're in. Viva revolution!
-
Flawed conclusion based on ignoranceAdd personal computers to the list of throwaways in the disposable society.
That's an excessively wasteful attitude to take. There are several far cheaper, even free, methods of ensuring spyware doesn't end up your machine. It's mostly safe browsing and common sense in how you manage files sent to you by e-mail and instant messenger. Beyond safe browing and caution, all you need is a good anti-virus program and a firewall - and all of these measures are far cheaper to implement than spending "$400 on a new machine."
-
Re:firecow> firefox/firefly I'm getting really confused...
You need Firesomething. Right now, as it happens, I'm browsing in Mozilla Waterdingo. (The choices for the brand, modifier, and noun are all fully customizable, of course. At one point I had made all the modifiers things like Battle and Fear and Death and whatnot, and the nouns were various weapons, so I got results like Mozilla TerrorAxe and Netscape ConquestDaggar; a couple of re-installs later I'm currently just using the defaults.)
-
and the extention of the day is . . .
Passwd Composer
n.b. I would have linked the authors website, but it's not responding. -
Re:You can thank me for that...
I used Firesomething and deleted all of the extrainious stuff that allowed for random names, photoshopped IE's icon to add orange (fade to gold) flames to the bottom half, left the rest as blue.
I used the Office 2003 themes from this guy to create the look and feel.
tidied the whole package up into a selfextracting zip archive and with a nifty install script to handle all this crap and bingo bango, Internet Extreme and the clients do love it, If I can find a place to host the package, I will. -

Re:It's all IE's fault
First of all, Firefox is not exactly "secure" as its widely publicized. It has its share of vulnerabilities.
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/known-vul nerabilities.html#Firefox
Ya, compared to MS, then fix vulnerabilities much faster. But patch delivery is pathetic in Firefox, still requires a complete download of the latest Firefox binary. -

Re:Not really new, but interesting
Not very many. And STILL Google Maps and GMail don't support my browser!
It's not like someone is forcing you to not upgrade. It's not even like they could reasonably downgrade to make Konqueror work, it just doesn't support everything that they require to work at a basic level. This is tantamount to complaining that Doom3 doesn't run on your Amiga. Duh! It's not like upgrading costs any money. How does your choice of minority browser make Web Developers any less programmers? It's not their fault they have a quadzillion target platforms. Something has to give, and targets like the Zaurus or Konqueror are first to go.
In other words, if you're experiencing pain migrating from 2.95 to 3.x, you're doing something wrong.
My original analogy, which I expressed poorly, was that it's like going back and forth between the two. But the "wrong thing" in our case was having a legacy codebase written by a crappy subcontractor (yay politics!).Making websites layout properly is harder than unit testing many kinds of conventional software in most cases. It cannot be automated, it tends to be very sketchy, targets change frequently, and the fixes for some tools breaks others. The "proper subset" of features that you mentioned earlier is a massive step backwards for the web, back to old HTML4. I don't think anyone wants that.
There are no excuses for not testing under IE, FF, NS, Safari, Opera and Konqueror.
Many people you're calling 'programmers' don't even unit test. I think that it's unethical to try and even sell a product written in C++ that doesn't have at least a minimal-requirement checking unit test suite. Hell, I won't even publish open source work without one!If your argument is, "People who don't test don't deserve to be called programmers." then I'm with you, sure. Testing is important. But that's not what you said. You said "Web Developers" are not programmers. It's an uninformed, biased, incorrect stereotype that harkens back to the old "scripting language" silliness.
Actually, most perl hackers back in the early nineties weren't "real" programmers. Back then perl was treated as just a fancy awk.
I said mid-ninties. By 1996, people were catching on to what Perl was and how important it was.As a Konqueror user, every day I encounter several sites that have the moral equivalent of "fuck you for not using internet explorer.".
Actually it's more like, "Fuck you for not using Firefox. It's free, it's fine. What the fuck is your problem?"No one is forcing you to use Konqueror. You can sit here and praise it to the skies, but the simple truth is that it's feature poor, and you know it. If Google could support Konqueror, you know they would, and they'd crow about it. It'd score big points with the Slashdot crowd. But they can't.
If you want me to drop the attitude, stop calling those people "developers".If I did as a software developer what they did as web developers, I would be fired.
You realize that carpenters say something similar about software developers too, right? Our job is easy. Support a few platforms. You're probably only writing with one GUI toolkit. Maybe a few font rendering errors or layout errors with the GUI. One two three binary targets for most projects. Maybe 5 if you're really streching for legacy hardware.
Application & System Development is older, and has more refined tools. We also have to worry less about how things "look" under the covers. A good webapp not only has to be fast, scalable, multi-platform and bug-free... it has to be pretty as well.
They're developers. Some of them suck, some of them are good. Like our field, it's chok full of people who suck. We have Java-Wageslaves, they have PHP-teens. We have Alan Cox, they have Eric Meyer. It all works out.

Re:Accessible?
Accessible doesn't just mean "keyboard accessible". It means
1) keyboard accessible in a way that users already know and understand, so that usability is not degraded, and
2) accessible with assistive technologies such as screen readers.
The page linked to has accessibility problems, not just for keyboard users, but especially for screen reader users. Fortunately a solution is on the way in the upcoming release of Firefox :)
I am working on a way to have accessible, styled/scripted form controls of all types. This includes menubars, tab panels, tree views and spreadsheets, not just simple widgets like checkboxes and radio buttons. IBM is contributing this work to Firefox as part of an open accessible DHTML standard.
The keyboard part of the solution involves the use of tabindex="-1" for elements that are focusable but not part of the tab order. This allows these elements to be in a container that the user arrows around, for example. This part is compatible with IE (see http://www.mozilla.org/access/keyboard/tabindex)
Then there is the compatibility with assistive technology. That is accomplished with new namespaced attributes. See http://www.mozilla.org/access/dhtml for an explanation and samples.
And you don't have to be a Nazi to care about accessibility. :) -

Mozilla adblock css works with Safari. Go to safari's advanced tab, and choose the

Re:Disable IPv6
IIRC it has to do with DNS hosts that don't answer at all (or correctly) to IPV6 DNS requests. Some bad home routers also are said to be a possible cause
(From https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=68796 )
When IPv6 is enabled on the client machine, mozilla does a AAAA lookup first,
and if there is none, does a lookup for the A record. Correct response for a
name server if there is no AAAA record (but the domain exists) is to return
NOERROR, with an empty reply. The BBC server returned NXDOMAIN (which was
incorrect), and mozilla exhibited correct behaviour by assuming that the domain
did not exist.

some more patches
I figured I'd post them here, so we can keep everything in once place, I found from the MozillaZine thread [mozillazine.org] dug up:
1.0.5 is mainly a security fix, but I have seen a bunch of non-security fixes creep in also, such as removing the default checkbox "yes" for "make firefox my home page." This looks like a big cleanup for the 1.0.x branch, before 1.1 takes over.

I don't know about the security fixes, besides the medium-risk frame/window spoofing thing (with 1.0.4, you should not open untrusted sites at the same time as sensitive sites...). Here are the non-security fixes (non-security as it seems to me) checked in since 1.0.4:
