Even if (in theory) they aren't downloading my browsing history and it is my browser making the requests they can deduce what sites I must be browsing to request such "suggestions."

According to the bug report for this feature, the intent is that any suggestion would be triggered by multiple visited sites, so this wouldn't reveal exactly which sites you had visited. Still, it obviously does leak some information.

Configurability is slowly being removed. Remember how configurable the UI used to be before the Australis disaster hit?

If you dislike the change, it's not like you were left high and dry: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/classicthemerestorer/. It's got more options than you can shake a stick at. However they could have released a version before the huge change to allow people to opt in to something that would auto-install that add-on when they updated as well as also detect if any add-ons used the add-on bar they removed and install an add-on that puts it back on the same update. (Some add-ons don't allow themselves to be located anywhere else, which is not Mozilla's fault.)

Also on the top right of a new tab is a settings 'cog' where you can choose "Enhanced", "Classic" or "Blank" so you can easily turn this off.

I would agree with that to some extent.

But remember, these pet-projects, such as Firefox OS has potential as it becomes bigger to serve the needs of corporates... just like we recently heard Panasonic using FirefoxOS in the smart-TV's.

And other projects like Thunderbird, which they wanted to downscale or end, serves many millions of users.

And sadly, there is no other privacy-orientated alternatives to Firefox, keeping in mind the massive add-ons eco-system - which work on all 3 major platforms.

Also, it's been like 8 years since iPhone came out, and yet we still don't really have a viable privacy-based alternatives to the likes of android spyware, etc. ... except perhaps, maybe the BlackPhone.

I keep 0 history. Soon as my browser closes, history is wiped. So if this simply looks at my history and serves me adds based on it, then hypothetically this would not work on my system.

Ok, I see some commentators in nerd rage already. Relax. If you don't want to see top sites when you make a new tab, Mozilla provides instructions to disable them. It's just a couple of mouse clicks.

As a Firefox Nightly user, I've already had to deal with the spam tiles. The fix is to install a 3rd party speed dial.

I use Super Start. It's nothing fancy, but it's clean and gets the job done.

1-10/12-13 = different threats + adblock doesn't do dns related things @ all & cannot avoid DNS, only ads (hosts can though, avoiding tracking DNS does as well as blocklists AND BY AVOIDING DNS, especially remote dns, HOSTS DO RESOLVING FASTER LOCALLY).

On 11 with DNS for instance: If/when I avoid using DNS since hosts are referenced first by using hardcoded favorite sites @ the top of my custom hosts file (for best speed especially vs. remote DNS), are you saying I am NOT AVOIDING A DNS BLOCK LIST (DNSBL)? Answer = yes I am, by COMPLETELY AVOIDING DNS IN THE FIRST PLACE (by hardcoding into hosts where I spend a good 95%++ of my time online in fact per my browser histories & router logs I used to make that list).
