AdBlock = Inferior + 'Souled-Out'... apk
My FREE hosts program adds speed, security, reliability & more, doing more, more efficiently vs. addons + fixes DNS' redirect security issues:
APK Hosts File Engine 9.0++ 32/64-bit:

A.) Hosts do more than:
1.) AdBlock ("souled-out" 2 Google/Crippled by default http://techcrunch.com/2013/07/... )
2.) Ghostery (Advertiser owned) - "Fox guards henhouse" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G...
3.) Request Policy -> http://yro.slashdot.org/commen...B.) Hosts add reliability vs. downed/redirected dns (& overcome site redirects e.g.
/. beta).C.) Hosts secure vs. malicious domains too -> http://tech.slashdot.org/comme... w/ less "moving parts" complexity
D.) Hosts files yield more:
1.) Speed (adblock & hardcodes fav sites - faster than remote dns)
2.) Security (vs. malicious domains serving malcontent + block spam/phish & trackers)
3.) Reliability (vs. downed or Kaminsky redirect vulnerable dns, 99% = unpatched vs. it & worst @ isp level + weak vs DGA, & Fastflux + dynDNS botnets)
4.) Anonymity (vs. dns request logs + dnsbl's).---
* Hosts do more w/ less (1 file) @ faster levels (ring 0) vs redundant inefficient addons (slowing slower ring 3 browsers) via filtering 4 the IP stack (coded in C, loads w/ os, & 1st net resolver queried w\ 45++ yrs.of optimization).
* Addons = more complex + slow browsers in messagepassing (use a few concurrently & see) & are nullified by native browser methods - It's how Clarityray's destroying Adblock.
* Addons slowup slower usermode browsers layering on more - & bloat RAM consumption + excessive cpu use too (4++gb extra in FireFox https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth...)Instead, work w/ a more capable native kernelmode part you already have - hosts (An integrated part of the ip stack)

True story, AdBlock vs. Hosts
W. Palant wrote me by email 1st saying "hosts are a shitty solution" to which I replied:
"Show us adblock can do more for added speed, security, reliability, & anonymity than hosts can, + that adblock does it more efficiently than hosts"
Which on my latter 'point-in-challenge' on efficiency AdBlock's proven by research to be MASSIVELY inefficient -> https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth... & adblock does FAR less than hosts (especially crippled by default).
I sent Wladimir Palant that challenge in response to his statement from 2 different email addresses I use!
Result = Still no answer from him in regard to my challenge put to him to this very day MONTHS later - that tell you anything? It did me!
He knows his addon is less efficient & features laden by FAR vs. hosts - Wladimir Palant RAN like a scared rabbit!
ClarityRay's also DESTROYING AdBlock - via native browser methods to DUMP what addons you use (it can't DO THAT to hosts files).
I only tell it how it is on hosts' superiority vs. AdBlock - Funny part is, Wladimir Palant running does too!
Especially considering "Almost ALL Ads Blocked" has 'souled-out' -> Google And Others Reportedly Pay Adblock Plus To Show You Ads Anyway: http://news.slashdot.org/comme...
APK
P.S.=> Bottom-Line: Hosts = a superior solution that also fixes DNS redirect security issues (vs. browser addons & their inefficiencies + messagepassing overheads as well as myriad lack of abilities hosts have from 1 file that's part of the IP stack itself - faster, more efficient, & less redundant as well, since TCP/IP has 45++ yrs. of refinement & optimization in it, & runs in a higher CPU serviced ring of privelege & operations in kernelmode vs. slower usermode layering over browsers slowing them more, & hosts = 1st resolver queried by the OS itself also)... apk

10.) Do all of those things and block ads (better than adblock) more efficiently in cpu cycles and memory usage
11.) Work on ANY webbound application (think stand-alone email programs, for example).
12.) Give you direct, easily notepad/texteditor controlled data for all of the above
13.) Block out trackers
14.) Block spam mails sources
15.) Block phishing mails sources"?"
* Simple YES or NO answers will do for repliers to this - that's all.

P.S.=> The ANSWER ="NO" to each enumerated item above as far as "Almost ALL Ads Blocked" (crippled by default & 'souled-out' defeating it's very base purpose) is concerned -> http://techcrunch.com/2013/07/...

Re:Yahoo doesn't have a search engine.
"what's the gain in running it through Yahoo?"
Advertising. Firefox searches will drive traffic to Yahoo, Yahoo gets paid to show ads to that traffic, and Yahoo pays Mozilla for the referrals.
A good question is what does Mozilla do with $300 million per year in revenue? Does coding Seamonkey, Firefox and Thunderbird plus some 'education and outreach' efforts really cost that much? How many programmers do they hire, and how much of the Mozilla Foundation is a self-perpetuating bureaucracy where the managers have hijacked an open-source code base into long-term employment (doing what, exactly?) A web browser has a QUARTER BILLION in net unrestricted assets.
-
Re:Scrap heap
the real reason they'll die is because they can't get a foothold in the mobile market - Google doesn't allow Android devices to be bundled with another browser by default
Which is why Mozilla are trying to make Firefox OS.
Do they have much chance? Probably not, it's a long shot. But I say, worth a shot.
But Firefox was *born out of*, and partly a response to, a monopoly situation where one provider's browser had 95% market share. So I don't think Firefox is going to be killed by another monopoly provider reaching 95% market share - just go back to the sidelines, until Google's increasingly monopolistic practices piss off enough people that momentum develops behind promoting alternatives again.

Re:Libre Browsers offer DuckDuckGo
In other news, Libre browesers like icecat, Iceweasel, and Abrowser offer search engines.like DuckDuckGo
There have been a DuckDuckGo search engine add ons for Firefox available for a long time, such as the DuckDuckGo and DuckDuckGo Plus addons. Mozilla also now ships a DuckDuckGo search engine option in Firefox by default.

There were options...
But I think Google cut Mozilla out of some revenue sharing thing. It doesn't look like there was much choice.
This is not the case... I was the internal meeting at Mozilla earlier today, and it was made very clear that all options (including Google) had stronger economic terms (than the current deal).
So it wasn't because Google cut Mozilla out.
See the official announcement too:
https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/...
Personally, I see how this can only foster more competition, less monoculture and thus a better web. -
Re:Can someone expolain what's so great about HTML
In firefox, you have various options to disable parts of HTML5:
webgl.disabled: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/s...
network.websocket.enabled
full-screen-api.enabled ...
And if there is demand to disable HTML5 for certain websites on a click-to-play basis, either somebody will write an addon or the browser does it already itself. For example getusermedia asks for your permission before giving access to the camera. -
Chrome Soon? FireFox on the other-hand...
It looks like the Chrome team is working on the "let keyword", whereas according to Mozilla's own MDN, they plan to remove the "let" keyword? or they let anyone edit MDN resources.

Re:quick question
It's a bummer browsers haven't enabled DANE yet. You can try an experimental addon for firefox. Good news is Postfix supports DANE for email!
-
Re:quick question
It's called DANE, or DNS-based Authentication of Named Entities and described in RFC 6698. The DNS record is TLSA, it associates a TLS certificate to a domain name.
Unfortunately a major browser vendor has yet to implement it. How about supporting the feature requests to implement it? https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/s...
-
Re:quick question
Public Key pinning is a small first step in the right direction, I think the problem is the first connection with the site, hopefuly something with DNSSEC could be added to help more

Re:40em column widths
So how should a web site provide a good reading experience the majority, who apparently are "so fucking retarded as to maximize [their] browser window" even on a 1920px-wide screen?
Gee, if only there were a way to suggest (but not mandate) that the browser render a piece of text in a certain manner. A "style", if you will. The specification of such a "style" might include a maximum width. Well, I guess no such thing could ever exist, so in order to format that text the server will need to send a whole pile of executable code.
-
They get blocked everywhere: Why?
They're advertisers (who not only suck up your bandwidth you pay for, but also have infected us many times over the years also due to their negligence on checking exactly what goes on in ads), stupid.
* Get it? Good...
(As for your illusions on self-hosted ads paying? LMAO - admen don't TRUST webmasters on clickcounts, so THAT is not going to happen... & thus your 1 "advantage" IS PURE BULLSHIT, & MOOT!)
Oh, & on 'whitelisting': Ever heard of, or seen, hosts.allow &/or hosts.deny on Linux?
APK
P.S.=> You still can't show "Almost ALL Ads Blocked" (inefficient in RAM + CPU use as hell -> https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth... AND slower in usermode, slowing up usermode slower browsers as is, with added messagepassing overheads + CPU & RAM use that's outta control too - crippled by default & SOLD OUT to advertisers as well NOT DOING ITS JOB & being crushed by ClarityRAY too...) doing MORE THAN HOSTS CAN or as efficiently in kernelmode with less CPU & RAM consumed (since it can't & YOU KNOW IT, lol) -> http://news.slashdot.org/comme...
... apk
-
Hosts work systemwide
And hosts enjoy systemwide protection due to limited amounts users being able to edit them; hosts are also many times more efficient than adblock in terms of ram and cpu use https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth... as well as operating in a higher cpu serviced ring of privelege in kernelmode as opposed to usermode browsers, which are slowed up even more by layering on more message passing overheads by layering in browser addons. Fact: AdBlock can't do a fraction of what hosts can OR nearly as efficiently as shown here http://news.slashdot.org/comme... either. Real ads don't pay if they're hosted on the same server. Hosts can 'white list' your favorite sites (placed at the top of hosts files equates to ~ 3 million indexed lookups if you keep 25 or so such favorite sites) making them access faster since they get cached into ram (rest of the blocked sites' speed doesn't matter, they're known bad and blocked. Who cares how fast you get to those when you don't ever intend to get to them). Hosts perfectly selectively block ads, malware, spam, and more. You fail again on all accounts.

Re:Don’t really get it
Try this Firefox addon.

Re:W3C does geolocation?
Yeah, I was thinking this guy's got it all backwards. If MaxMind et al are already showing the right position, then the problem is the location returned by the W3C API call in his unspecified browser which depends on which location service his browser uses (possibly not the default), and whether his device is GPS-equipped.
In the absence of GPS, Firefox defaults to using Google Location Service (according to https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/... ), which is not one of the 4 "providers" listed at http://whatismyipaddress.com/ and could easily be the one database that's wrong, causing his confusion. I expect Chrome to do the same. IE may use a Microsoft-provided IP database, again separate from the four above -- I couldn't find confirmation of this.
For servers that don't rely on W3C javascript calls to get your location, it all entirely depends on which service they subscribe to, which you may not be able to find out. Short of submitting corrections to "all of them", you're just out of luck.

Re:Thanks: ABP fails vs. hosts... apk
Like I said before - SEE SUBJECT LINE ABOVE (says it all: ABP can't DO all those things here -> http://news.slashdot.org/comme... [slashdot.org] & YOU KNOW IT (by proving it with your statement)!)
It can with the filtering that is already in place on my router.
LOL: Faster? You mean opperating in a SLOWER ring of cpu priority privelege in usermode (vs. hosts in kernelmode)?? WRONG! AdBlock eats SO MUCH RAM & CPU too -> https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth... [mozilla.org] That it's not even funny... it's horribly inefficient!
My router is its own self-contained system and doesn't use any CPU time or RAM on any of the computers and devices hooked up to it. Also, I only have to configure my router once, instead of using your method which requires setting up every single PC and device individually. So yeah, try again.
ROTFLMAO: Why're YOU posting as ac then?? Don't YOU have the BALLS to speak under your "registered 'luser'" account?? Apparently not - Guess it wouldn't look "too good" to outright FAIL as you have here using it, especially vs. myself (& hosts superiority vs. "Almost ALL Ads Blocked" crippled by default)... would it??? Nope... lol!
Posting anonymously and pretending to be someone else to in order to write posts in praise of yourself are two completely different things. The former is simply a privacy matter, the latter (what you did) is dishonest and pathetic.
In addition, you act and speak just like a child.

"Almost ALL Ads Blocked" crippled by default)... would it??? Nope... lol!
Again - thanks (for making ME look good & yourself, by way of comparison?? Well... lol, "not so good"... AdBlock too!)... apk

Re:Bizarre usage habits
Hell you cannot even find a particular tab efficiently with that many open.
Tree Style Tab addon. Life is better with it.
Also Ubiquity and Firefox's built-in tab grouping (panorama or whatever) help. All three work well together: I use the grouping mechanism to set up separate sets of tabs, with some organised for special tasks, such as programming references; within a group, I use Tree Style Tab to further organise the tabs and collapse/expand sub-groups as needed; and I use ubiquity or the URL bar's tab search feature to find tabs quickly if I don't already know where they are, such as in the big "general tabs" clump.
It's far more useful (and usable) than bookmarks, and with some setting tweaks doesn't even use much extra memory or CPU. Just have to set tabs to not automatically load at startup and you're good to go; Firefox doesn't start to have problems until around 1,000 tabs if you do that.
Only real problem is that Firefox doesn't always do a good job of preserving sessions, so you'll want to do regular backups of sessionstore.js in case it decides to eat all your tabs one day.

Been using Nightly for a while.
My daily web browser is Nightly. A few days ago when they enabled e10s by default I found out about the change because my browser crashed on startup. The only way I could get it working again was to start Nightly in Safe Mode and disable e10s. Multiprocess in Nightly is varying states of very broken for most addons. For me the key ones are HTTPSEverywhere, Adblock Plus, and Reddit Enhancement Suite. None of these addons are functional with e10s enabled currently.

Re:Might just get me back
There's one catch though. According to the Mozilla e10s page, for now multi-process only means separating web content from the GUI. Having separate processes for each tab is coming later down the road.

1.) Speed (adblock & hardcodes fav sites - faster than remote dns)
2.) Security (vs. malicious domains serving malcontent + block spam/phish & trackers)
3.) Reliability (vs. downed or Kaminsky redirect vulnerable dns, 99% = unpatched vs. it & worst @ isp level + weak vs DGA, & Fastflux + dynDNS botnets)
4.) Anonymity (vs. dns request logs + dnsbl's).---
* Hosts do more w/ less (1 file) @ faster levels (ring 0) vs redundant inefficient addons (slowing slower ring 3 browsers) via filtering 4 the IP stack (coded in C, loads w/ os, & 1st net resolver queried w\ 45++ yrs.of optimization).
* Addons = more complex + slow browsers in messagepassing (use a few concurrently & see) & are nullified by native browser methods - It's how Clarityray's destroying Adblock.
* Addons slowup slower usermode browsers layering on more - & bloat RAM consumption + excessive cpu use too (4++gb extra in FireFox https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth...)Instead, work w/ a native kernelmode part - hosts (An integrated part of the ip stack)
