However, IF it were about DNS?
Here's a FREE way to secure vs. DNS' redirect issues (w/ something you natively already have per points "B" & "C" below):
APK Hosts File Engine 9.0++ 32/64-bit:
http://start64.com/index.php?o...
(Details of hosts' benefits enumerated in link)
Summary:
---
A. ) Hosts do more than:
1.) AdBlock ("souled-out" 2 Google/Crippled by default)
2.) Ghostery (Advertiser owned) - "Fox guards henhouse"
3.) Request Policy -> http://yro.slashdot.org/commen...B. ) Hosts add reliability vs. downed or redirected DNS (& even allow you to overcome redirects on sites like
/. beta as an example thereof, here on THIS site, easily).+
Secure vs. known malicious domains too -> http://tech.slashdot.org/comme... w/ less added "moving parts" complexity + room 4 breakdown,
C. ) Hosts files yield more:
1.) Speed (blocks ads & hardcodes fav sites - faster than remote DNS)
2.) Security (vs. malicious domains serving mal-content + block spam/phish & trackers)
3.) Reliability (vs. downed or Kaminsky redirect vulnerable DNS, 99% = unpatched vs. it & worst @ ISP level + weak vs FastFlux + DynDNS botnets)
4.) Anonymity (vs. dns request logs + DNSBL's).---
* Hosts do more w/ less (1 file) @ a faster level (ring 0) vs redundant browser addons (slowing up slower ring 3 browsers) via filtering 4 the IP stack (coded in C, loads w/ OS, & 1st net resolver queried w\ 45++ yrs.of optimization).
** Addons are more complex + slowup browsers & in message passing (use a few concurrently - you'll see) & are EASILY detected by native browser methods - which is why CLARITYRAY is destroying AdBlock.
*** Addons slowdown SLOWER usermode browsers layering on MORE - & bloating memory consumption too + hugely excessive CPU usage (4++gb extra in FireFox https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth...)
Work w/ what you natively have in kernelmode via hosts (A tightly integrated PART of the IP stack itself)
APK
P.S.=> Enjoy...
...apk

Tell us how effiicent Adblock is
After reading this https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth...
and
Tell us almost all ads blocked does more for security, speed, reliability, & anonymity than hosts do... same with RequestPolicy.
LMAO!
APK
P.S.=> Hell, Wladimir Palant the creator of "Almost ALL ads blocked" (souled out as it is to GOOGLE) ran from that challenge after he emailed me 1st saying "hosts are a shitty solution"...
Go for it!
Hehehe, after all - W. Palant can't manage to show his crap work does more for speed, security, reliability, or anonymity than hosts do, AND his efficiency in SLOWER USERMODE (stupid design again) vs. hosts in kernelmode under a highly priveleged subsystem (IP stack) is horrible... see link above, "read 'em & weep", chump troll! apk
-
I only post on hosts where they apply
Vs. clearly INFERIOR competitors (browser addons), vs. malware & the like, or for shoring up DNS security issues... prove otherwise.
Going to quote a favorite of mine from Marvel Comics, in Ultron 6 here (soon to be the star of the next installment of "The Avengers" films upcoming in 2015 on this note & your "orders"...):
"Shutdown code, rejected: My programming ( http://start64.com/index.php?o... ) has advanced beyond YOUR commands: Beyond YOUR weakness https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth... " - Ultron 6 FROM -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?f...
*
:)He says it BETTER than I ever could... as far as your bullshit.
APK
P.S.=> I am also NOT selling anything - it can't be "spam" then either, & you trolls MOST CERTAINLY cannot validly technically disprove my points on hosts giving users FAR MORE BENEFITS in added speed, security, reliability, & even anonymity than ANY other single slower usermode crippled & 'souled-out' browser addons (vs. hosts kernelmode HIGHLY priveleged operations' superior speed + efficiency with over 45++ yrs. of optimization poured into the IP stack itself, of which hosts are a std. part of)... that's that - fact: There's nothing you can do to stop me either (lol, & you know it)... apk
-
Re:I've got a great idea!
If all you whiners would just read the bug tracker you'd be able to see right away what the reasons are: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/s...
-
Adblock BLOWS & hosts aren't the topic
See subject-line above, & this (adblock's HUGE mess) https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth...
"Almost all ads blocked" (crippled by default) is EASILY detectable via native browser methods as well (for blocking it, which is WHY CLARITYRAY is destroying AdBlock) for dumping what addons you use... hosts, aren't.
APK
P.S.=> Fact: Hosts do more than adblock, ghostery, requestpoclity BY FAR for added speed, security, reliability, + anonymity & more efficiently run by a highly priveleged kernelmode subsystem vs. layering over already SLOWER usermode browsers, increasing message passing overheads + RAM & CPU use (see link above as proof thereof)... apk

Re:Core competency
And really building it on Windows takes about as much effort as complaining about it seeing how the machine does all the work.
Is there a tool to automatically set up the build prerequisites on Windows, including downloading and installing Visual Studio Express and the Windows SDK? And how many GB of your monthly Internet cap would that consume?

Only viable if privacy upheld...
While I generally support Mozilla's endeavors, as one of the last bastion of noob-to-guru accessible, Free/open source, secure and most important privacy respecting software around, this has me worried. The statement about "Publishers will then be able to collect and use this content for other forms of storytelling and spark ongoing discussions by providing readers with targeted content and notifications." could mean yet another data mining and targeted advertising opportunity, for instance.
The only way I could see any value in this for users is if it adheres to privacy-respecting principles. We've seen a handful of alternatives on the net, such as Disqus, but ultimately these tend to centralize personal information, not much different than 'log in via Facebook, Google etc.." . We don't need any more of this; I give up convenience all the time and create a variety individual site accounts specifically to avoid someone being able to see and profile all the sites upon which I comment.
Now, giving Mozilla the benefit of the doubt, it is possible that this endeavour is built out of their "Persona" project ( https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/... ) , which seems to be the best SSO type option I've seen on the web, at least in theory. It requires only an email address, doesn't disseminate personal information all around the web or allow for site-owners / third parties to mine your data, and what little information that passes through Mozilla is under their privacy policy which is very reasonable. Mozilla has shown in the past, especially with Sync, that there are ways to provide convenience to users while protecting their privacy, so I'd like to think that Persona could very well do the same. However, I am worried that this project, funded by third party grants and media giants, may have other interests in mind. If this is the case, I'd prefer that Mozilla not sully themselves by getting involved.
I suppose time will tell. I can only hope Mozilla has the fortitude to make the decisions that put user intent and privacy before the whinging financial desires of data miners and trackers.

The fix works (& I do far more too)... apk
I don't accept 'em @ all as noted earlier default. Tinfoil hat stage LONG ago (Wrote the VERY 1st security guides online for Windows as far back as 1997).
I also stick to Opera 12.17 64-bit (Last TRUE Opera, not Chopera - I don't trust Chrome though it's quick like Opera (the speedking for ages on html + Javascript long before Chrome existed & gives it a run for its money even now OUT of development: Google's TOO advertising-centric).
Opera gives you FAR MORE granular control of cookies, plugins (only on demand even), frames/iframes, javascript, & more - IE doesn't, FF does to an extent but needs addons & even MORE than Chrome commandline options & GUI easier too w/ Opera.
(All NATIVE to Opera & others copied it less efficiently since addons add memory, cpu (man, look at adblock adding messagepassing overheads + tearing up 5gb RAM & huge CPU here -> https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth... [mozilla.org] for example, whereas I use hosts & do FAR MORE with less in 1 file + NOT IN SLOWER USERMODE, but instead PURE KERNELMODE faster!))
Turning off a usermode faulty w/ large hosts dnscache in Windows & caching via another kernelmode subsystem the diskcache instead saves faulty usermode services' RAM, CPU, & other forms of I/O expended on it, making up for indexing w/ the technique I showed others in this VERY exchange albeit for redirect protection another benefit it has besides speed (faster than remote DNS lookup + protecting not only site redirects as shown but also vs. DNS' kaminsky redirect bug flaws too) placing 24 of my fav sites currently @ the TOP of my custom hosts file which equates to 2-3++ million indexed seeks - MULTIPLE BONUS, more efficiently & effectively via this program I wrote http://start64.com/index.php?o... [start64.com] to do all that, + FAR MORE for added speed, security, reliability, & anonymity BETTER than any single browser addon out there mind you on MULTIPLE levels!

Re:Any chance at getting one?
How about $100?
Announcement post; https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/...
US store: http://item.ebay.com/291125433...So why anyone get this instead of an Android device? There are plenty of usable Android devices for less than $100 (unsubsidized).

Oracle Breakable After All
That's been tried. Unfortunately, the virtual machine was implemented so incompetently that web browsers now require the user to add sites using this language to the user's personal whitelist.

Drinkypoo: Thank you! Why?
You helped me find another issue with an inferior competitor of mine http://ask.slashdot.org/commen... in "Almost All Ads Blocked" which has TRULY "Shown it's colors" in this mess, lol -> https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth... where that junkpile proved me correct again (above & BEYOND messagepassing usermode SLOWER overheads browser addons introduce)...

P.S.=> Wladimir Palant, almost all ads blocked (lol, crippled by default & 'souled-out' to GOOGLE) RAN like a scared jackrabbit when I asked him, AFTER he emailed ME first "Show me AdBlock can do MORE good things for users than hosts & more efficiently"... lol, he outright RAN! Funnier still is the FACT you "Open SORES" goofs can't outthink (since you can't disprove my points on hosts) or outprogram me (adblock says it all along with Ghostery, RequestPolicy etc.)... thanks!

Here's a way to easily protect yourself vs. it
Easily w/ a file you have already: hosts files,- my sources in the security community are on it like "white on rice" vs. the sites & servers they will be using, blocking them out!
You can't be burned by what you can't touch!

No I'm not, but you? apk
You're a troll, and I suspect you are 1 of 5 types out there fighting & nigh constantly harassing me here on
/. for YEARS now on this site:1.) Advertisers
2.) malware makers
3.) botnet herders
4.) webmasters (I held the app back for them in fact, it was done, in 3 parts though in tty mode, as far back as 2003 here but when malvertizing went out of control, out the door she went to 'the masses' for the absolute good, since any idiot knows being destructive = easy, but doing good NEVER is, but it's worth it imo)
5.) An INFERIOR competitor (e.g. - AdBlock, Ghostery, & RequestPolicy)* Doesn't 'take a brain' to realize THAT much - after all: THEY'RE THE ONES WHO GET "HURT" by it... problem is, per my other post to you? THEY have been hurting others bandwidth/speed, security, & more for DECADES...
HOWEVER: Even the likes of THEM in that list can benefit via my work here... it is, the embodiment of "the absolute good" for all, & it's something I strove for in designing it + creating it. ANYONE can benefit from it. Even them.
Funniest part is that those technically unjustifiable downmods they almost always level on my posts on hosts (they're coming on these too, I nearly guarantee it are "the best they got" but they certainly CAN'T get the better of me disproving my points on hosts files' mulitiple nigh ubiquitous value to end users...
APK
P.S.=> In fact? I'd almost WAGER per #5 above in this case, that it's Wladimir Palant (AdBlock creator) who wrote me by email, 1st, saying "hosts are a shitty solution" - well, when I confonted him in email reply to show me that "Almost ALL ADS BLOCKED" can do MORE than custom hosts? He refused to reply, & RAN like a scared rabbit - ESPECIALLY after this article study showed how massively INEFFICIENT in RAM (5gb usage) & HIGH CPU USAGE AdBlock is https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth...
... apk -
To "refresh your memory"
"All past achievements may pale in comparison to the work of Dr. Alice Krippen" -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?f...
*
:)(Now, *IF* you have trouble comprehending the analogy here I use @ the termination of my "std. post" regarding my program? I suggest you ask a user here (pretty popular & well-known who has a PC repair shop with many customers as his testbed) named "Hairyfeet", a peer of yours on
/. - he turned from DNS servers (wasteful of power, vulnerable to redirect problems in security etc. which HOSTS fix no less on clientside systems) to AdBlock - he sees a SIMILAR effect but... he won't even argue on this (& that guy LOVES to argue (sorry Hairy, lol)) but, it's true... I just do it BETTER than AdBlock & even FIX DNS...).He knows it.
We discussed this by email & had HUGE 'battles' here on
/. regarding DNS vs. HOSTS (less complexity & electricity usage, RAM usage, CPU usage, etc.-et al) - funny he switched though!AdBlock OR other browser addons? Far more complex & INEFFICIENT AS HELL (see my original post, documented evidence exists of that much).
In fact? You can confront Wladimir Palant of AdBlock on this (I did, after HE emailed me 1st stating "hosts are a shitty solution"... well, ok then):
So, thus, I confonted him in email reply to show me that "Almost ALL ADS BLOCKED" can do MORE than custom hosts?
Result??
He refused to reply, & RAN like a scared rabbit!
ESPECIALLY after this article study showed how massively INEFFICIENT in RAM (5gb usage) & HIGH CPU USAGE AdBlock is https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth...
I am additionally QUITE willing to forward that email exchange to ANYONE who is curious... as it is my fav. tool to utilize vs. CLEARLY INFERIOR competition in abilities + efficiency... facts, rule!
APK
P.S.=> I'm not telling it HOW IT ISN'T FOLKS - I tell it how it really is, with backing facts (concrete, verifiable & UNDENIABLE ones from reputable sources)

Re:Anybody please!
Well, I already mentioned that it let's you control whether tabs appear on top or below the address bar, but there are also pages of other options too. Just go to the addon page - there's a big list right there in the description.

Re:Please, please just stop...
Then I would suggest you use this https://addons.mozilla.org/en-... [mozilla.org]
I don't get the full detail of your link because Slashdot anti-spam code cuts off the shit at the end.
I also don't need to worry about which site you're linking to as Slashdot helpfully tells me which site the link goes to.
I also don't need you to tell me the link because I'm sensible enough to use a browser that displays the full URL of any links I mouseover.
But hey, paste in the full link if you like. It's lazy and I can't knock that.

Pain spots
OK, here's the deal. I've been on FF since it was called something else and version number was 0.2. I'm still loyal but am getting increasingly annoyed and have to revert more and more things each version. Here's the rundown this time:
1. The FF29 and FF30 GUI is crap. The previous one was superior in every aspect. That panel thing you get by clicking the "hamburger menu" is a mess that I won't even try to decipher. Curved GUI elements are inane on a rectangular display. The background tabs are hard to tell apart, the borders between them suck. Just get the old theme restorer add-on to fix all this stupidity.
2. FF29 and FF30 crash every 20 minutes with HTTPS-Everywhere add-on installed. It took me a while to figure this out, disabling Flash or Hardware Acceleration etc. has nothing to do with it. That add-on has to be updated, although I don't understand why the problem crept in with FF29+.
3. The changelog in this article is for FF28. WTF Slashdot? The correct changelog is at http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/f.... It has nothing to do with VP9 or HTML5 or Opus. Firebug 2.0 compatibility is accurate however, so the summary is a hodge podge of FF28 and FF30 changes. But I knıow why, because it's getting icreasingly difficult for Mozilla to post a damn changelog on time. It takes about 1-2 days after the update gets pushed out before a damn changelog appears for the actual version. -

** Addons are more complex + slowup browsers & in message passing (use a few concurrently - you'll see)
*** Addons slowdown SLOWER usermode browsers layering on MORE - & bloating memory consumption too + hugely excessive CPU usage (4++gb extra in FireFox https://blog.mozilla.org/nneth...)
SO - Instead, I work w/ what you have in kernelmode, via hosts (A tightly integrated PART of the IP stack itself)

Re:Did they fix the memory-hogging bug?
No. It is generally a single-threaded program (the UI widgets probably have their own thread though). Bug #392073. Bill McCloskey has written about the plans to make Firefox multithreaded.

Re:Please, please just stop...
I switched from Chrome to Firefox on Android because as far as I can tell (after trying a load of them) Firefox is the only Android browser that doesn't have a completely fucked-up cookie management policy. It's made even nicer by the self destructing cookies addon, which lets me whitelist sites with cookies I want to keep (i.e. ones where I log in), but destroys tracking cookies and HTML5 local storage as soon as I close a tab or navigate away from a page (keeping them for a little bit in some storage that isn't visible to the page, so I can hit an undo button if I realise it's just deleted something I want it to keep).

Re:Did they restore "delay image loading"?
You MAY want to look at an alternative like Pale Moon. The UI option still exists in that fork and I don't expect them to remove it.
For reference, it looks like they pulled it out here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=851701 -
And not even on FTP
Why do they release Firefox 30 for Android in the Play Store BEFORE it is even on their own FTP server
