Re:User-Agent not reliable anyway
It is part of the guidelines/agreement for
.mobi use, eg see:
http://mtld.mobi/domain/policies/compliance
http://www.w3.org/TR/mobile-bp/
http://ready.mobi/results.jsp?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fsmlpx.mobi&locale=en_EN
I don't know if the boot has been put in yet for non-compliance, but I hope it is.
The best practices guide referenced specifies page weight, default media types, etc.

Re:Limited in scope and vision...
Marketing matters: witness the dotMobi top-level idea. So far they have BMW, Rolls-Royce, CNN Money, and a number of others. If you take a look at the sites (see http://kicker.mobi/ for an example), they're nothing more than standard html reformatted to look normal on a mobile phone. Why not use a simple @media command? Because marketing to the money men is how you get funded. Simplistic ventures that capitalize on a branding mechanism, with little real innovation behind them, will return quite handsomely. We occasionally find investors willing to burn money by investing in a science/tech project that might pay off in the end, but they'll usually go for the safer bet.

Mob friendly?
They allow a Russian guy to register wunderground.mobi , here comes the dotcom cybersquatting again.
Check http://pc.mtld.mobi/whois/index.php , put wunderground.mobi to search box and see the result yourself. While on it, check slashdot.mobi , it is taken too.
Weather Underground is one of the oldest sites on web (they started with Telnet/Gopher!) and they have a dedicated mobile (WAP) version at
http://m.wunderground.com/
So, a Russian guy can get that wunderground.mobi yes? What guarantees there won't be some "Enter your credit card details for plus access" on that page?
Cybersquatting in 2006, great. The question is: They are that naive or is this on purpose? -
Re:Incorrect .mobi Link
The
.mobi link Zonk provided is actually just a registar's cover page. The real (and much more web standards-based) .mobi web site is at http://pc.mtld.mobi/ [mtld.mobi].Actually the 'correct' site (see a post I made above) is http://mtld.mobi/. If you're using a PC it will take you to pc.mtld.mobi
... but if you should go straight to that page using a mobile it doesn't perform any checks and gives you a 150K JPG to digest. Navigating to mtld.mobi should provide the optimal page. -

The .mobi acutally make sense
I generally don't like all the new TLDs that tends to be created nowdays.
However, the .mobi-domain actually make sense, becase domain owners are required to comply
with the .mobi Styleguide.
Yes, that means content under the .mobi domain is more or less guaranteed to work on a mobile device. Sure, todays mobile devices have great web capabilities but they will never come close
to a normal computer when it comes to screen resolution.
The styleguide is avaiable at http://www.w3.org/TR/mobile-bp/
There is also a PDF avaiable at http://pc.mtld.mobi/documents/dotmobi%20--%20Switc h%20On!%20Web%20Browsing%20Style%20Guide.pdf -
the mobi tld makes senseThe mobi tld makes a lot of sense. I have been waiting a long time for a standardized method for accessing sites from portable devices.
Why do we need yet another TLD that needs to be registered and maintained when we can today go to mobi.slashdot.org and get a slightly different page?
Because nobody will do it, if it is simply some voluntary suggestion to use a subdomain standard. There would also be no way to enforce standards on a subdomain.
