Re:I half agree with him
What good is public domain to music? Music that has no profitability doesn't get played except as background for other profitable ventures. Or has ragtime music come back with a vengeance and I haven't noticed? It's a sad fact, music only gets played because promotions tell people they want it. The days of good music selling itself ended with Elvis Presley.
I agree the term of copyright need only be an incentive to make good music, far less than 70 years, but the end of the copyright term only brings about the end of interest in the music. If there is still demand for music over 70 years old, that's an incredible achievement. Why shouldn't the songwriter and promoters be rewarded?
If you've got a problem with rewarding labels for making you aware of your favorite music, get off your ass and check out some indie bands. I couldn't care less what's on the radio, indie bands have real talent and diversity.
Labels don't make bands better, nor do they determine what bands are good. All they care about is marketability - "can I sell this" - which leans more towards looks than musical ability. In fact, their music is usually dumbed down to be more acceptable to a wider audience, though less inspiring. I can name a dozen bands that will get signed in the next year, and 8 of them will be worse than they are now. Look what Universal did with my friend's band!

Also see Neil Gaiman's babycakes. It can be online (probably illegally) at http://journals.muchmusic.com/view_comment.jsp?jI

Space: TISHow exactly do you figure that Space is the place where bad programing goes to die? Granted, it's summertime, so I'm sleeping late and working to make money to pay tuition, thus less TV is watched, but Space is one of the few channels I tune into regularly. Sure, they run four hours of Star Trek in a row (one of each series except Enterprise), but you get Forever Knight in the morning, an eclectic mix of movies, and coming this fall Stargate (not to mention Brimstone , Angel and many more!). What more do you want?( Firefly perhaps?) We're not the US with 300 million potential viewers, so we get fewer dollars and fewer original programs, but it's always been that way.
Besides, if Moses hears you bitching, he'll punk you good, or send Rick the Temp after you.

What about this Metallica story?
Metallica Tricks The Tricksters. They're planning to flood file sharing networks with Metallica "named" John Denver tunes to trick users. I hope they have Denver's estate's permission to use his works.

Re:Audio Galaxy
Not that this nessarily has anything to do with the topic at hand, but lamb is just one of those bands that IMHO has done very well through P2P. I got my first listen of Gorecki via napster and it blew my mind. Now I own all their albums when it wouldn't have otherwise
Anyone who relys on mainstream channels (i.e. radio/tv/soundtracks) to pick up new music probably won't get exposed to bands like lamb, as their sound isn't exactly 'radio friendly.' A few exceptions being hearing gorecki on CSI and watching the wedge on much music (in Canada - it plays real alternative music).
Sneaker Pimps on the other hand have had a few top 40 singles back in the 90's. While they are awesome, I don't own any of their albums myself, but did just recently catch their show in Toronto. While it did rock, it wasn't at all like what you hear on their more popular tracks where the girl who's name I can't remember sings (she wasn't on the tour).

Conspiracy Guy on NapsterCanadians who watch Space (a sci-fi TV station) will know Conspiracy Guy. He did a rant on Napster, it's available here (as both RealVideo and text). My favorite part:
A group of users, sharing copyrighted materials with no direct costs to them? I mean, think about it, how did anyone ever come up with such a scheme?
CG walks out of frame, and we pan to a giant LIBRARY sign.
His other rants are available here.
