Re:1984
I don't just blame cannabis - I'd just like to travel on the bus without the stink of cigarettes and weed and the tinny noise of crappy music bugging me. Not exactly a huge ask is it? But the chip on your shoulder about cannabis must give you real back problems.
P.S. Don't even think about comparing me to Daily Mail readers unless you want to say it to my face and get a smack. Hating selfish wankers is not an exclusive perogative of those arseholes ta very much.
If you don't like the sounds of head phones, then buy some ear plugs you limey bastard.

Re:Subtitles?Misspent youth playing in speed metal bands before turning into a hardcore geek has unfortunately robbed me of a nice chunk of my hearing. So, subtitles are a necessity. So, were you aware that there are these devices called "earplugs" that help prevent hearing loss?
Personally, I like to use a in-ear monitor with Shure E2's. If I turn off the receiver I can hardly hear anything around me so I can keep the monitor volume stays at a safe level. -
Re:lights for photographers?
you're going to be better off using regular old gels to change the colors of your lights.
That used to be true. Many LED fixtures now provide as much light as filtered PAR lights. As a bonus, there is no IR and UV contamination. Gel's tend to be fairly wide in their response, so some artistic shots with very saturated colors can't beat LED fixtures for rich color. For example, take the original story and look at the red/green room. Conventional gel's can't produce that stunning color. Good effects can be had with off the shelf DMX 512 LED wash lights. Controllers are getting dirt cheap with many under $150 that can control a dozen multi-channel RGB fixtures.

Here is a 6pack of PAR RGB LED fixtures for under $100 each.

Cool, some things to think about...
First and foremost, it is a game controller, not a gig guitar... so I think it is important to separate two different "threads" of thought here...
As a guitar, well, it's not like a real guitar. That's OK, because if you'd like to learn guitar, you can get yourself an inexpensive set up like this or this, or for left-handed folks, this. I don't think comparing the controller to a real guitar or learning to a real guitar is relevant. Not everyone that has dreams of wailin' on a guitar or spankin' the plank with some down-home (your favorite kind of music here), but lots of folks would enjoy the fun of playing guitar without the trappings of learning two hands, many strings, and 18-24 frets.
Games are supposed to be entertaining - I don't think that the comparison to real-world instruments is relevant (beyond their entertainment value).
So far as the hack... It seems pretty neat to me. Doing hardware hacks is a lot like candy - it doesn't have to have a point - it's just fun. -
Re:NOTE: you don't have to do it in hardware. What you need in terms of USB host is USB on the go. That, the midi driver and a USB <-> midi dongle will do what you're proposing.
The main use for USB on the go (its first intended purpose) is to both- download images stored in your camera onto your computer (camera is slave)
- control a USB printer from the camera (camera is master)
You just found a new use for USB on the go! Well done :-) - download images stored in your camera onto your computer (camera is slave)

Yamaha UX16 USB Midi works w/ Linux
This usb midi device to connect your midi keyboard works excellent in Linux. The module is snd-usb-audio. I've done all the midi-type applications (rosegarden, NoteEdit, etc) and this midi/usb works great. Plugged it in and it works.
Just wanted to make a post in case others might be interested.

Sour Grapes... and a contest
Hmm, the story wasn't good enough when I posted it last week. Well, in all fairness to the editors, it's probably because I linked to an online music store that happens to be running a contest where someone will win one of these guitars. They're retailing for $1000, so I guess that's something, although I wouldn't want to be seen playing one.
Anyway, at the risk of giving a decent online business a vicious Slashdotting, check out the link after reading this: The contest is only open to US and Canadian residents age 18 and over, so if you're not eligible, do the site a favor and don't even bother! the contest
I am not affiliated with Music123. I didn't enter the contest.
