MyFamily.com
Myfamily.com has some nice features for a quick setup like this. It's not free, but it's quick, easy, and inexpensive and all you do is pick your settings. http://www.myfamily.com/ We're actually using it for a collaboration and scheduling space for a church worship team. Myfamily.com
I come from a huge extended family and one of my cousins set up a site on MyFamily.com. It's not perfect and you won't have a lot of control, but it has a ton of features and is pretty easy to use.

Use Existing Service?
Maybe your goal is to create something from scratch? If not, there are a bunch of services you can buy into that do some of the same stuff and many of them have put a lot of time into their user interface to make it fairly easy for non-programmers to participate.
Ideas:
Use o-photo or shutterfly in conjunction with a password protected blog. Or use a family site system like MyFamily.com or FamiliesR.us (I use familiesr.us. I still end up doing most of the posting in the family.) -
The Reverse Slashdot Effect
...the privaty equity firm that is the controlling shareholder of SCO (I forget its name) managed to persuade another investor of the likelihood of a multimillior dollar settlement from big names.
The name you're looking for is the Canopy Group.
The /. crowd is generally unable to affect stock prices, but if we (a) start a campaign to hurt SCO sales and, even better (b) isolate the leading shareholders of SCO, figure out what other business interests they have, and boycott the whole lot of them, we're likely to have justice prevail.
Here's a list of the Canopy Group's portfolio companies, including some that should know better and might be encouraged put some pressure on their investors to stop this nonsense. Do you do business with these companies or recommend their products? If suing their partners and customers is just part of "the Canopy Way" should you or your company worry about litigation from them next? If you're an investor or employee and Canopy loses, should you worry about your stocks or your job? Maybe it's time to start the "reverse slashdot effect."

Not to mention...
That other, oh-so-successful company Myfamily.com, the creepy Mormon company that tried to corner the geneology market. The only reason they are still around is that they purchased and gutted another dot com, which they ditched after laying off over 90% of the people and walking off with more cash and equipment than they payed in (worthless) stock.
He's essentially a corporate serial rapist. -
Who wants to hobknob with murderers anyway?
The world's spinning out of control as it is. I rarely watch news channels anymore, just skim CNN.com for important things. Everyone's dying, everyone's killing each other, the LAST thing I want is to walk around the world wondering if I'm gonna be a chalk outline in the next instant. And yeah I agree with whomever said that they are closer to family and friends. Perfect example: I have 11 aunts and uncles and 20+ cousins. Most of us are online and I found place that lets us have a family website for free. Chat, pictures, news, programs to share, funny stories, family trees...I'd never see them ordinarily since they live in New Mexico, California... I love these schleps who start in with the Big Bad Internet Ripping Away Community. Come ON. These are people who hiss and spit when the weather frizzes their hair. The same kind of people who bitched to have children removed (bodily of necessary, and the peasants rejoice) from theaters by 6pm are now complaining and pissing about how kids don't go OUT enough and the Internet is to blame. We're a high tech society. Sure, we don't take as many hikes as we used to. But isn't that a lucky thing since we're "developing" all the beautiful land left anyway?
