Re:Check out the indie label websites
My friend and I run a small indie music website called indiradio. We have about 250 songs on there, all totally independent (mostly -very- small bands), just bands trying to get their music out there. Check it out, and come participate... listeners can make accounts and take advantage of some of our lite-social-networking features (threaded comments on songs/artists, profiles with favorites, private messaging). Artists, post your music here... it's one more place for people to see it. We get decent StumbleUpon traffic sometimes.
We're also in the process of starting up a very different kind of indie record label. It's called 80/20 records. Put simply, we're giving artists 80% of the profit from all sales and licensing. No hidden fees, no recouping a big fat Mercedes (to quote High Fidelity). We don't have any artists yet, as we're still in the preliminary stages of launching this thing, but we hope to really turn the music industry on its head. -
Re:can internet radio play free music?
so what are we all waiting for?
collectively, we should probably start to wake up. -
Re:As an artist...
Want to help beta-test a new site that's both a streaming station and a social networking site? :)
</shameless self-promotion>
Soundexchange is full of lies. We're not shutting down anytime soon just because of a little bullying. -
Re:Magnatunes et al become Copyright aggregators?
Excellent idea! Bravo!
I just so happen to be an agreggator that's stepping up. :) -
Re:Oh, they can kiss my ass.
Some radio stations will happily play that sort of material and will never bow to the RIAA. There's a new revolution coming. People everywhere are getting pretty sick of the RIAA telling us how much music should cost and who should be paying. It's time for a change in leadership (or just complete anarchy). Let the free market rule, and get rid of the outdated cartel.

My friend and I are just starting a new website to pool together new DRM-free music. It's devoted entirely to independent bands and their fans. It's called indiradio. We're looking for artists who are committed to creating good music and potentially making money at the same time without resorting to screwing over their fans. We're looking for fans who realize that the music industry has just gone too far. We're here to help.
Be part of an exciting new community willing to tell the recording industry to SHOVE IT. We don't need the old infrastructure. Bands are recording themselves these days, and fans won't tolerate being told when and where they can play their music. Like another comment said, you may not be able to "easily find downloads" on Pandora, but on a community-focused and fan-oriented site like ours, you sure can. Expect only DRM-free 128-kbit MP3 streams and downloads, with the ability (soon) to purchase full-quality CDs with the money actually going to the artists. Don't settle for less.

Re:industry
It's a problem I'd love to see solved. See: indiradio. It's still in closed beta, but it should be open soon enough, for any independent artists to post their music.
