Re:Just another "me too!"
The camera's mega-pixel count did sound high, but those numbers are nearly meaningless w/o the quality optics and image sensors to make those huge images actually look good.
Earlier they made(?) and used sensors with high pixel count even though you could save the pictures at a lower resolution, but it still gave better details (also normal CCD processors doesn't catch all colors per pixel but the colors in a grid even though the final resulting image has all colors in one pixel so the output data doesn't match the input data there and with a higher original resolution you shrink the errors there relative the output pixel / get better averages.)
I don't know if someone else (one?) did use a similar camera solution. I don't know if they actually developed the sensors themselves / had them made for them and if so if they still do.
At-least from a historical perspective it could be the case that their camera was one of the very best / the best used in a device of that kind.
I think I would say the iPhone 5 have a better quality image than the Lumia 1020 here:

Maybe lower dynamic range here?
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/qaV5N_Z...5s doing well here too:
http://www.windowscentral.com/...I remember some images back when were I thought the Nokia phone was better though, was it against iphone 4 and some pre-Lumia phone?
Here, Nokia N8 vs iPhone 4:
http://mynokiablog.com/2010/10...White balance seem better on the iPhone 4 than the Nokia N8:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...Place of origin matter in that if it's a rebranded Chinese phone with Nokia software or so then it can't really beat what it is based on in hardware and differ from what others have access to whereas if it was Nokia made it could be both worse and better. It at-least leave room for the possibility of it being special/different/better (Then again the likelyhood of Nokia releasing a better phone than Apple or Samsung considering R&D funds available

Re:Elop was a great executive
Nokia was dead already, their incompetent board had ensured that by not moving when the clear threat of Android and iOS emerged. At the point Elop joined they really had only two options: take a punt on Windows (which had a chance of working) or slip into certain irrelevance with their own operating system that was too late, or become yet another Android manufacturer.
It's popular to blame the whole thing on Elop, but it was the board of Nokia in the previous years that put the company in the dire situation where it needed something drastic.

Very sad
To think that Nokia's own Symbian had more than 50% smartphone market share only three years ago and big plans for their Linux based highend OS, which was universally praised, and instead now going for an OS that not only locks the user down, but locks themselves in a position where they give away control of OS development, outsource all manufacturing (after shutting down most locations in Europe and firing loyal employees by the boatload) and need to contend with the likes of Samsung who do their own CPU, RAM, display etc. fabrication is just unfortunate. It's hard to not be cynical about this.
Microsoft obviously is pushing for positive publicity offering free samples to bloggers etc. but all the money in the world won't make the OS more attractive to the end-user, even with their new funky looking N9-like design. Functionality wise the it's lacking compared to Android and the restrictive Metro UI whether on your computer or on your phone is butt-ugly at worst and uninspiring at best.
On the other hand this might actually what MS alternatives have needed to become worth considering by more end users.

interview from two years ago
This was from the time when N900 was the example for more phones.

Re:I don't have a beef with one
Google the "Smoked by Windows Phone" vidoes on YouTube.
You mean this clever little failed marketing exercise?
Thanks for mentioning that. Since you've staked your credibility on that misbegotten biased-loaded shill-fest, we know how to assess the rest of your breathless excitement.

Re:Just like Nokia?
Nokia's maps are by C3 - a company that's been acquired by Nokia http://mynokiablog.com/2011/10/31/now-apple-owns-c3-the-folks-behind-nokia-maps-3d-what-happens-now/
And of course you meant to say that C3 has been acquired by Apple , not Nokia.

Re:Microsoft's Cellphone OS Marketshare Is Plummet
How would you define success as it relates to windows phone 7? Apple is successful in making money with iOS and Android is successful in market share and ad revenue for Google. How is wp7 successful?
For a start it is a great phone which can do all the smartphone functions iOS or Android can do. It also has the fastest growth of the recent smartphone app stores for published applications.

Re:almost tempted to buy some shares
No review I've seen of the N8 has been positive.
However lots of people who actually purchased the phone has been.
Engadget camera fail and what not
.. Also "omg it switch screen after 0.5 seconds! What to do?"http://mynokiablog.com/2010/10/03/the-truth-about-engadgets-nokia-n8-versus-iphone-4/
* Awesome camera.
* HDMI.
* USB OTG (mouse, keyboard, ..)
* USB MS (HDD, memory sticks)
* Good navigation software.
* 720p video playback, also on external screen.
* WebTV.
* People complain on the browser but I assume you can switch to for instance Opera. So why does it matters?
* Flash Lite.
* Xenon flash.
* Something more I forgot to mention.
* QT -
Re:Disagree
But Nokia only put out a small handful of revisions to the OS before it quit.
That might be a misunderstatement. Nokia didn't quite quit per se, just took a rather steep turn.
They are bringing out a MeeGo device this MWC, and the linux community seems to be quite excited.
In fact, just recently, Jim Zemlin (Executive Director of the Linux Foundation) gave a rather long presentation on Linux in general, and MeeGo in specific, in Japan. You may watch the video yourself[1], or read a summary on a nokia fansite[2].
Let's see, Nokia just might redeem it self.

Re:About Time
The MP3-player is dead. Heck, the PMP is pretty dead to.
Eventually I could almost go as far as saying that the non-enthusiast compact camera market is (rather will soon be) dead to.
* All phones can play music now.
* Plenty of phones can play video.
* Mobile phone cameras become better, and as soon as they are _GOOD ENOUGH_ much better doesn't help much. Regular people don't drag around their camera, they do with their mobile phone.The Nokia N8 can play 720p 30 fps H.264 video and even got HDMI output for 6 hours of video playback. Beyond a memory card you can also hook up UMS devices such as USB memory sticks or an external hard-drive. If it would had ran MeeGo I assume it would had picked up even more formats faster (as soon as you can get VLC running and play ogg, flag and all the tracker formats such as mod, s3m, xm and so on what more is there to ask for?.)
The camera sensor is 1/1.8", bigger than for instance the latest (?) Canon Powershot SD4500 IS / IXUS 1000 HS (1/2.3".)

Not stereo "3D", head tracking. 3D.
For games, stereo is not the right approach. Viewpoint adjusted by head tracking is. For recorded images like TV, you don't have the data to do that. But for a game, you have full 3D models and all the necessary graphics hardware. And, as that video shows, it just takes a few Wii Remote parts to do it. The effect is that, at long last, the screen becomes a window, rather than a surface.
Since games tend to be played by one player per screen, the restriction that the view only works for one person is fine. Unlike stereoscopy, there's a big win for gameplay - you can move around and change your viewpoint. You can duck behind on-screen obstacles, so you can actually use cover in a shooter.
You can hang stereo and depth of focus on this, too. And it will work better, because the system knows how far away the viewer is.
When this is done well, the visual effect is spectacular.

So, restricted to capacitive screens
No mention of the N900.
Drawn on N900. LOL...I cringe at how bad this looks (though it is unfinished)
