Online play isn't as "important" as you believe
I know, all of us here in Slashdot, would find it difficult to believe, but the majority of people who buys games, are playing them off-line. Blizzard for example, who sells millions of units per game, has stated repeatly that only a small fraction of it's player base ever goes online with their games. Although that fraction turns out to be a couple of hundred-thousand players, it's still a small portion of the over-all pie.
With the recent series of MMORPG cancellations, like Ultima X: Odyssey, Warhammer Online, Mythica, and several others, it is no secret that companies are re-evaluating what kind of profit an online game can generate. It is not the easy cash cow that developement houses came to believe it to be. -
Sadly not
From the Mythica site
As a result of this effort, job eliminations within Microsoft Game Studios will take place, and up to 40 employees may be impacted
There will be no patch writing for those poor souls

Re:Lindows reference
I agree. I don't really see any harm in calling the game Mythica. It's not like they're calling it Dark Ages of Camelota. As far as similar content goes, take a look for yourself: Mythica and DAOC
Interestingly, if you go here
,the name of one "plane of existance" is called Midgard, as is the name of one of three realms in DAOC. Same legends aside, after visiting Mythica's page, I get visions of a 3D diablo 2 with a cracked out battle.net riding shotgun, not really DAOC. No mention of massive PVP, which in my opinion is what makes DAOC. I don't see a reason for Mythic to panic. DAOC is far more intriguing and well thought out imho. -

Re:What's really ruining MMORPGs:I went through a similar thing myself, so I'm rather interested in some of the ideas behind Mythica. Largely MM but certain areas create 'Private Realms' for groups for a couple of hours. From the FAQ:
While other games use private instances as a solution to MMORPG overcrowding, Mythica uses Private Realms to significantly enhance the gameplay, providing such depth as cinematics, highly-scripted encounters, and destructible environments.
Of course, it's not actually here, and it's by M$, so you may wish to diss it out of hand. But it seems to answer a number of your issues - except possibly the death downtime.
