Re:conservative rag.. nothing to see here
Exactly, though there are much better write ups out there but letâ(TM)s go with a NBC channel in order to be more neutral.

Re:Such a shame...
Considering past incidents with electronic voting machines in North Carolina such as the one last year in Carteret County, I'd just as soon see Diebold stay far, far away. Here in Orange County, NC we still use optical scan and it's a fairly straightforward and painless process in my experience.

Thomson: dishonest and stupid
Wow, Thomson is totally innumerate. He's asked about a percentage, and he replies with raw numbers about one game
... without giving a total number of games sold! Maybe he's right about the percentage, but he hasn't shown it. Oh, wait, he's wrong about that
Actually, it seems a bit more likely that he's just dishonest.
The federal government found that in the school year 2003, there were 48 school killings. The year before that there were 16, and the year before that 17. Something is going on. I submit that the video game generation is coming of age.
That doesn't match the numbers I've seen. Plus, there's the causation problem. It could just as well be that kids are influenced by the Iraq war.
Not a single law on the books to stop the sale of murder simulators to kids
Sure, because every time they get put on the books, they get struck down (follow the link to the opionion for more cases). -
Re:it's a flaw in the constitution
I sincerely doubt now there is a single "legal" human inside the US, everyone is guilty of something now, and it will keep getting worse.
You're probobly right. Here's an example of a perfectly normal person falling foul of a obscure 19-th century law: Police dispatcher fired for living with boyfriend (other sources here and here).
Apparently in North Carolina, there is a law against unmarried people "co-habitating", and the woman's employer(a conservative sheriff) decided all his employees needed to follow the letter of the law. According to WECT TV, "In late May she was called into her supervisor's office and told if she didn't marry her boyfriend or stop living with him, she would be fired. It's called cohabitation, which is illegal in North Carolina, thought is a law that is rarely enforced."
If something this common and accepted is illegal, and it only came to light because some redneck sheriff decided to enforce it out of sheer fundamentalist fervor, how many other laws are there on the books that you're breaking, right now? Remember that guy who was arrested for cussing in front of kids in Minnesota or someplace? Or the "miscegnation" laws prohibiting mixed-race couples? There are some odd laws out there, and while some are amusing, it's really horrifing to think that someone could look hard enough and find some law you're breaking without even knowing it. -
NBC is reporting it as real now too...
"Google Says E-Mail Plan No Hoax"
Search Giant Plans To Offer 1 Gigabyte Storage
POSTED: 8:32 a.m. EST April 1, 2004
UPDATED: 2:46 p.m. EST April 1, 2004
You know about e-mail, but are you ready for Gmail?
Online search provider Google is introducing a free e-mail service called Gmail. Do you think you will sign up for an account?YesNo
Online search provider Google said in a news release that it is introducing a free e-mail service as it raises the stakes in its battle against Yahoo! and Microsoft.
The company is promising to provide up to 500 times more storage space for users than the market-leading e-mail services provided by Yahoo! and Microsoft Hotmail. Gmail will offer 1 gigabyte of storage space, roughly 500,000 pages of e-mail.
Hoping to make money from the service, dubbed Gmail, Google has told its computers to mine the topics in the e-mails and then deliver text-based ads related to those subjects.
For instance, an e-mail from one friend to another discussing an upcoming concert might prompt Google to include an advertising link from a ticketing agency.
For now, Google is only opening up the service to invited users but expects to make it accessible to everyone within a few weeks. People interested in signing up for an account are being encouraged to register at Gmail.com.
In the news release, Google cofounder Larry Page said that the company developed the project after e-mail users complained about having to stay under storage limits on other web-based e-mail systems.
There was some speculation on technology related message boards that the plan was an April Fool's Day prank.
Google representatives later said that an online job listing for a position at a lunar station was a prank, but that the e-mail service is a legitimate project.

Re:Actually it is safer
No what's bad is when you lose elevator control and have obese passengers!!
Ok, I know it wasn't the passengers but I read somewhere that they want to weigh all passengers now. It seems as if they really want to kill flight as a way of travelling. -
No thanks,I compiled at the office
Yea well our state AG is not up on them there technology issues. Roy is busy with the State Fair contracts the past couple of years and simpley does not have the time nor resources to deal with this 'white collar' stuff.

3D Printers
This kind of thing's been around for a while, except using plastic.
Lasers are beamed into a special plastic whilst it's liquid, and the affected volume solidifies, giving you a solid 3D plastic model of whatever it was you 'printed'.
A bit more permanent than making an ice model...
Engineer turns up to presentation to demonstrate his new Miracle Widget, with a big wet patch in his pocket... "Um, hi. I did have a model, but it kinda melted. Honest."
:-P
Anyway, a quick link to the 3D laser printer.
