I long for a modern affordable clamshell pc
If someone would make one of those old clamshell style handheld pc's with a 3/4 size keyboard, wifi, and a decent sized hardrive, I would snap it up in a minute. Something like the NEC 900 with the current windows mobile os on it would be a killer app for college students. The ability to have an instant on device you could easilly type on to take notes in class and be online with (hell, throw in mp3 player and video too) and it would be a nice alternative to lugging around a heavy laptop that takes forever to boot up and shut down.

Three Words: NEC PowerMate Eco
The NEC PowerMate Eco is an environmentally friendly desktop PC. Principal among its features is its very low power consumption. This would give you some (though not all) of the advantages of a desktop computer with the power consumption of a laptop.
Or buy an Apple; they're relatively efficient as well. -
Re:Shouldn't computers be getting cooler?
Transmeta has been addressing this for the last few years. I just bought an NEC PowerMate eco, which uses a Transmeta Crusoe processor, for my wife. It's not the fastest processor in the world, but it's sufficient for web-surfing and emailing, and the machine runs cool enough that it doesn't have a fan, and is pretty much silent. It's also made with environmentally friendly materials.
Most users however seem to want speed more than anything, leading to machines that use a lot of power and generate a lot of heat. Cheap diamonds would seem to make this trend worse. -
Re:If you're willing to use NetBSD instead...
Also, I just noticed that NEC has a new item in the MobilePro line coming out soon: the MobilePro 900.
