Teen rights (was:Re:Let's NOT make voting easier!)
"Also, I see a lot of teenagers bitching that they cannot vote. OK kid, tell you what. When you have proven that you have some degree of responsiblity, that you understand what it is to support yourself and see large amounts of your money being taken from you by force by well-meaning fools who will use it to assuage their own guilt, when you understand the consequences of your actions and the fact that some mistakes will outlive you, then you can vote."
We're not all bad.
I personally, have never gone on a shooting rampage at my school, run anyone down, stolen anything, or any other bad stereotype that you could probably think to associate with the word teenager.
Why the hell do you think we're bitching, anyway? Teenagers are the last minority to be unable to vote. The rest (blacks, women, etc) have had their voting rights granted. Would we want to vote if we didn't care about our country?
Currently a man can go to war, fight, be wounded or die fighting for his country and still never have the chance to vote. If his country meant nothing to him, he would have moved to canada to escape the draft. Such a man loves their country.
Another statistic maybe you should look at is that 1/3 of all teenagers are actually more informed of the current issues than their parents. Who would you want electing, ignorant middle aged americans or educated, aware teens?
In 22 years the youngest of todays teenagers will be able to run this country. I hope they will be more accepting of the younger generation than you.

Online voting only helps bush...
If we switch to online voting, it is almost inevitable that there will be a hacking attack on the site, thereby making all the votes from that site unusable.
If online voting gains enough popularity, the goverment might consider closing the physical voting booths so those who don't or can't afford to have a computer cannot vote. Which means they won't elect a candidate that represents them, and the issues they care about, thus turning the online voting booth into Billionaresforbushorgore.

here's a thought: DON'T DO IT AT ALL!
Porn isn't at all the most damaging content on the internet. In case you people screaming "OH WON'T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!" have forgotten, almost every kid has seen a pair of boobs, early in life. And they might have seen some pubic area too, even earlier in life. How will seeing a pair of breasts hurt some kid? Ask yourself again, how will being lied to and censored by your parents hurt some kid?
If I want to see violence on the internet, I'll go to a major international news site.
If I want to build bombs, I have a host of them I could go to. Most censorware doesn't block bomb building information.
If I want to view info on how to make GHB or meth I can go to a host of sites. See above for censorware info.
If I want to break the censorware, I can go to peacefire.org, censorware.org, or any other place that mirrors such info.
Quit censoring you idiot. If you're using smartcards then look at the logs and ban the accounts viewing hardcorexxxmegababes.com. Don't make everyone suffer. Remember that freedom of speech means nothing if you cannot hear it.

Respect.
Arresting someone for talking on a cellphone is not what some of you philidelphians should be calling "enforcing" your laws. I suppose if you got arrested for using your palm/newton/startac or whatever PDA/Organizer you choose to use it would be different. I would be all for arrest were he driving while talking on it (which I know is flamebait but drivers who don't have the decency to pull over to the shoulder really annoy me), but I find it hard to beleive he would be driving in an area gridlocked with people.
As far as the protesters go, I was not there and therefore cannot say how fairly the cops were treating people. From what I saw on the news, I think the arrested party should be the feminazis who had defaced copies of the statue of liberty, claiming that the right to kill their child was in the constitution. Fuck you. Nobody's holding you back, if you want to go to some country where you want to kill, go ahead. Don't stay here and ridicule this country because you don't like one part of it.
The subject, respect, is probably why the cops were arresting people. If they were indeed arresting people based on race, PDA's/Cells and/or their clothes, I respect the protesters a lot more than the cops, because they weren't afraid to show their opinions, and at a political convention that's what it's all about. I respect the hackers who were standing around far more than the ones attaching cops, pushing right to abortion by ridiculing american icons, and others who were trying to cause riots. Having a right to your own opinion is what makes this country great. That you cannot express it freely is sad.

Re:T-Shirts can be banned too
What you do not seem to understand is that this is all a control issue.
As far as I know, the judge in this case is not a geek, and probably does not frequent slashdot.
He may be fooled by the MPAA's lawyers into thinking that this is all a technology issue, and make a wrong decision. The people who cracked the dvd encryption did so because they wanted a DVD player for linux, not just to anger the MPAA (which would probably serve no purpose anyway). By breaking the encryption, there is hope for a dvd player for linux, but if this is decided to be illegal, then the MPAA will hold the code as their copyright and there will never be a linux player. The mirrors, they won't matter. If the MPAA gets pissed and owns the copyright, they will never licence it to a company who will create a commercial linux player because they will be bitter over the linux fans who cracked it. Quite clearly, you don't care too much about your freedom of speech. When you have a right or freedom that you care about taken away, you should expect the same reaction as yours from others.

Courtney love does the math
I must give credit where it is needed, so this piece came out of the salon article Courtney love does the math. It does an excellent job of showing that we should be against the RIAA and record labels, not the artists, and not lars ulrich. Lars is worried about people stealing his music because he gets paid so little. This article made this very apparent to me.
I want to start with a story about rock bands and record companies, and do some recording-contract math:
This story is about a bidding-war band that gets a huge deal with a 20 percent royalty rate and a million-dollar advance. (No bidding-war band ever got a 20 percent royalty, but whatever.) This is my "funny" math based on some reality and I just want to qualify it by saying I'm positive it's better math than what Edgar Bronfman Jr. [the president and CEO of Seagram, which owns Polygram] would provide.
What happens to that million dollars?
They spend half a million to record their album. That leaves the band with $500,000. They pay $100,000 to their manager for 20 percent commission. They pay $25,000 each to their lawyer and business manager.
That leaves $350,000 for the four band members to split. After $170,000 in taxes, there's $180,000 left. That comes out to $45,000 per person.
That's $45,000 to live on for a year until the record gets released.
The record is a big hit and sells a million copies. (How a bidding-war band sells a million copies of its debut record is another rant entirely, but it's based on any basic civics-class knowledge that any of us have about cartels. Put simply, the antitrust laws in this country are basically a joke, protecting us just enough to not have to re-name our park service the Phillip Morris National Park Service.)
So, this band releases two singles and makes two videos. The two videos cost a million dollars to make and 50 percent of the video production costs are recouped out of the band's royalties.
The band gets $200,000 in tour support, which is 100 percent recoupable.
The record company spends $300,000 on independent radio promotion. You have to pay independent promotion to get your song on the radio; independent promotion is a system where the record companies use middlemen so they can pretend not to know that radio stations -- the unified broadcast system -- are getting paid to play their records.
All of those independent promotion costs are charged to the band.
Since the original million-dollar advance is also recoupable, the band owes $2 million to the record company.
If all of the million records are sold at full price with no discounts or record clubs, the band earns $2 million in royalties, since their 20 percent royalty works out to $2 a record.
Two million dollars in royalties minus $2 million in recoupable expenses equals ... zero!
How much does the record company make?
They grossed $11 million.
It costs $500,000 to manufacture the CDs and they advanced the band $1 million. Plus there were $1 million in video costs, $300,000 in radio promotion and $200,000 in tour support.
The company also paid $750,000 in music publishing royalties.
They spent $2.2 million on marketing. That's mostly retail advertising, but marketing also pays for those huge posters of Marilyn Manson in Times Square and the street scouts who drive around in vans handing out black Korn T-shirts and backwards baseball caps. Not to mention trips to Scores and cash for tips for all and sundry.
Add it up and the record company has spent about $4.4 million.
So their profit is $6.6 million; the band may as well be working at a 7-Eleven.

The land of the free and the home
of the corporate idiots.
Contrary to what the man in the solid-gold ferrari (lars) would like you to beleive, artists aren't starving to death from the big bad napster. Limp bizkit has embraced napster, encouraged their fans (like me) to have napster and use napster and go ahead and trade limp MP3's on napster. Limp bizkit got free concert sponsorship by napster, limp got money, limps fans get a free concert, all groups get cash and publicity and are generally happy.
Lars, on the other hand, has rejected napster. He has made derogatory comments toward napster, he has alienated 330,000 of his fans, he got a lot of bad publicity, he loses money from the people who are sick of his actions and refuse to buy metallica CD's.
What all the artists and regular people saying the evils of napster seem to forget is that NAPSTER IS FOR AND BY PEOPLE WHO LOVE MUSIC!
Shawn fanning created it because he needed a better way to find MP3's. Software developers for napster created it because if they hated napster, they wouldn't be working for it. The people with napster are supporting it by having their collection available to everyone else on napster. The so-called "pirates" lars has spoken of don't exist. People who have (had) metallica songs on napster and were booted off weren't snickering while downloading songs and saying "haha look at lars we're stealing from him because we hate him and his band". The people downloading it did so because they liked metallica. If they didn't like metallica, they would have either deleted the songs or never downloaded them in the first place.
None of the people on there are on napster for the sole purpose of spiting, stealing from and angering artists. They are on napster because they enjoy listening to music. Napster users buy more music, as the independent study showed. Is this hurting the RIAA? That the people with this software are buying more music? If anything, more music being bought means more dough for music execs. If the RIAA endorsed napster, we wouldn't have 300,000 alienated fans, we wouldn't have the dumb puppet man, we wouldn't have this lawsuit and we would still have napster.
Why can't we all get along?

Bad things already exist. Oh no.
On the cnn article:
According to the FBI, Carnivore works much like a "sniffer," a program that has been around for some time and is designed to monitor and analyze network traffic so as to help network administrators eliminate such problems as bottlenecks.
FBI officials believe critics will be less fearful once they know more about Carnivore, which has been used in about 25 investigations in the last year, including criminal cases and "national security" cases involving counter-intelligence or counter-terrorism
Okay, my interpretation of this is that they already carnivore on enough ISP's to use it as evidence in 25 investigations last year, which means that for all you know your ISP already has it, was not required to notify you and has been spying on all your SMTP mail for the past year. That fucking pisses me off.
1) Anyone who spies on me without telling me and forces my ISP to comply is invading my privacy, and turning my ISP into a means for them to spy on me. Jackasses.
2) My ISP has been taking my money and not telling me that they are allowing people to spy on me. I have done nothing to make the FBI suspicious of me. That means that since I am paying for internet service my ISP is a thief and a sleaze.
3) Since this has been going on for at least 1 year (possibly longer) it means the FBI could be spying on all of us right now. Very bad.
4) Saying that such "sniffers" have been around for a long time is wrong. Sniffers to monitor network traffic (like hitbox and the like) have been around to monitor hits, not spy on people. Wrong wrong wrong cnn.
5) Network admin is a lot different than big brother.
Think of your rights. And how you will miss them.

A sad reflection on the state of our times.
But isn't nothing your fault and always being able to sue somebody else for your fucking stupid actions what makes america what it is?
If you're too stupid to tell that was some serious sarcasm. The saddest part of it all is that it is a painful reflection on the actual state of america.
Parents are too lazy to do anything with their kids these days. I'll give you some examples:
A few weeks ago my friend jack was diagnosed as having ADD/ADHD and put on ridalin. I asked him if it helped him stay focused or concentrate? No. What happens if you don't take the pill? I feel tired.
Thus proving that he probably does not have either ADD or ADHD, and that the only thing he will get from ridalin is liver cancer.
I don't fear the human genome because of the futuristic possibility of longer life, no disease, I fear it because I can see parents having push button control over their kids. Instead of beating their kids or telling them they hate them to force them to behave they will manipulate the kids genes to make sure of factors like:
Sexual preference (forced straight, because parents can't love kids the way they will be for some reason)
Dissent (none)
Ridalin produced in the pancreas
Height (won't grow up until they move out so they can't talk back or argue)
Body (perfect)
IQ (Smart enough to get A+'s, too stupid to question parents authoritah)
Parents don't want to spend time with their kids. It used to be that parents wanted their children to be succesul, they wanted them to be happy, they wanted to grow up and be good people. Nowadays it's my career is more important than my kids, my kid can go on ridalin because he/she won't leave me alone, my kids a thug and even though I don't care about him/her and don't spend time with him/her and don't listen to him/her. I set him/her in front of a media so they leave me alone, I leave them with a friends parent, I let them roam at night and grafiti stuff and break things because I don't have any control over them. Are these the words of a bitter old man? No. I am a 15 year old boy who is only too aware of how much parents don't give a rats ass these days. That is sad.

Re:Listen! It's Picasso, spinning...
Intresting comments about art. As far as some of the so called "pornographic" art, I doubt it will have the ability to filter it, much less any other form of porno. Reasons?
1. David is considered "porn" by some bible bitchers. However, I doubt he would be blocked because he is made of stone, instead of flesh and I assume the "complicated algorithms" are nothing more than looking for X colored pixel in picture X. Which may or (most likely) may not block pictures of blacks, pale whites, asians, half nude people, or people wearing leather (so if you're a kid who's into BDSM porn you got nothing to worry about)
2. Animals aren't the same shape or color of humans. So if you like beasty porn then you're fine. Don't worry about censorware, worry about the farmer who's suing you for sodomizing his cows.
3. If all BAIR does is check images, adult stories won't be checked. And you won't need to worry anyway cause if you got a palm VII then you can get sinpalm, which has no censorware for it yet anyway.
4. Set your default JPEG or GIF viewer to a graphics program instead of IE or nutscrape. Get your images via FTP and BAIR won't be able to filter it.
See you censorshing asswipes? Nothing you do will defeat me. Nothing! FUCK YOU!

Re:It isn't unconstitutional or wrong
Okay, scenario here:
You are sitting at home on your computer browsing slashdot. Your wife is watching the TV, and your kids are asleep. Suddenly an unmarked car pulls up, men dressed as police walk up, break down your door, hold you and your wife and children at gunpoint and take your computer, file cabinet and any other things they deem to be "evidence", without having to show you a warrant. Later you find out that you didn't do anything and that the men who busted down your door and stole your stuff weren't actually cops, but men dressed as cops because even if they were real cops they wouldn't have had to show you a warrant.
So you're out X dollars for a computer, X dollars for a new filing cabinet, X dollars for whatever else "evidence" they stole and X dollars for the credit fraud they did because you had your credit card bills in the filing cabinet.
And there isn't jack shit you can do about it. And I suppose that that isn't unconstitutional or wrong.

Re:And the problem is???
I fail to see how limiting access to stuff like this is such a big deal.
And I fail to see how one would give up their rights for no reason at the drop of a hat because some slimeball politician told you to.
I have yet to see any strong advocacy movement on slashdot to allow children of all ages to see XXX porno freely. It's about the same issue.
I don't think so. Not all games are violent, not all have laura croft in them, not all games are exclusively killing. How are games hurting children? If they can distinguish the difference between reality and the virtual world? Now ask yourself how porno might hurt kids. Not only is it a completely different issue, but your suggestion that they are the same is irrelavent and laughable. And while there has been no movement by /.ers to establish porn for kids, slashdot has opposed censoring programs like cybersitter and netnanny.
Many slashdotters have played driving games, right? If the goverment decides that defensive driving during a race is violence/violent, then they could Legally force video game owners to put driving games behind the curtain, even if the games contain no sex/nudity/profanity/violence/dead people.
There is a fairly long standing acceptance of movies being rated PG, meaning that a parent needs to guide the kids to see it. It's about the same issue. It's not really a constitutional issue as far as I can see.
Here's a concept for you. It wouldn't matter if they were PG or not because the majority of little kids need a parent for A)transportation to the theatre and B)Money. It isn't a constitutional thing, it's a censorship thing.
The Constitution protects the expression of speech. And the game companies are still allowed to express the game however they want. They are merely being limited to who their audiece is, to a group that possibly is more mature, and better able to deal with it appropriately.
I've met 8 year olds I trust more than some adults; maturity is irrelavent. Immature people do many things because the majority is not immature. No goverment law can govern common sense. It's been tried and failed time and time again.
As far as a constitutional right, Freedom of speech means nothing if you cannot hear it. The game companies are businesses trying to make cash like the rest of us. Cutting back on who they can sell to would be useless because if the kids really want to see it they'll either 1) get parents to say they can 2) get another adult to pose as a parent and say they can or 3) get a fake ID.

Re:god given right
On a day to day basis, I think most of us forget that the internet evolved out of a government program and not through open-source advocacy.
Knowing about the internets history, yes you are correct.
The goverment program was funded using taxpayers money. Therefore we have a right to use it since we paid for it.
On the other hand, if the internet had stayed a goverment program only goverment offices and universities would be connected. And the goverment would control all the pipes. No, the internet did not evolve out of open source advocacy. But it would be light years behind what we know it as now without open source, and without companies like apple, netscape, microsoft, all the companies that brought the internet to the public. If the internet was still a goverment program then (assuming you could access it) it would be a god given right for every non-US citizen.
The goverment doesn't like monopolies because it wants the monopolies to itself. But in countries where the goverment owns all the monopolies (communist states) the goverment has the complete right to install so called black boxes. And communist countries are oh-so-good at controlling the free flow of information.
I therefore applaud earthlink. If the goverment's so corrupt it won't put itself in line big companies must do it for the goverment.

Timothy Mcveigh
For those who don't live in the US or are a tad clueless, Timothy Mcveigh is a mentally disturbed man who was convinced that the goverment had implanted a computer chip in his rear to monitor his location and everything he did. Because of this he filled several 50 gallon drums with diesel fuel and nitrogen fertilizer making quite the bomb, lit the fuse and stole another car to get away.
I don't condone McVeigh's actions. I don't feel that killing several hundred goverment workers and blowing up a daycare is a rational way to deal with the problems caused by big brother, noting that McVeigh did not have a computer chip in his buttocks.
But the goverment or goverment subsidaries (like the F.B.I.) cannot pass legislation or get court orders to install big brother in every ISP in america and then expect noone to care. People care about their privacy. Most won't do anything. Some will kill 400 people with a truck bomb.
In conclustion, the goverment is creating their own enemy. Innocent people do not deserve to die because of some asshole who cannot respect peoples privacy. But they will if things like this continue.

Re:"Clean" geek's opinion.
Problem #1: all illegal drugs are lumped together, as if their effects, risks, and potential harm were all equal. Legal drugs don't enter into the discussion. There are quite a number of illegal drugs that are less injurious than many legal drugs - the legislated morality is the only difference. In this case, while methamphetamines appear to have been singled out, the specific provisions that are at issue here are not restrained to a specific drug.
Ridalin, the cure all for the yuppie flu of the americas, causes liver cancer. It's also in the same family of speed. Go figure. I'd say it would cure a lot of americas problems if it wasn't prescribed by doctors with no brains. FYI, it is completely possible to OD on ridalin and die from speed-OD like symptoms.
Problem #2: The Internet as made real information available to millions, and allowed many to make intelligent, personal decisions based on fact, not propaganda. As with anything else that fights hypocrisy with facts, when the facts are against them, the media will be perceived as a threat.
Media propoganda is a threat. Religous propoganda is a threat.
Stupid religous sheep in ireland are (and have been for a long time) killing each other because their preachers told them to. Bring what is perceived "bad" into the media and religous gets into it. Then everything following is fucked up. Look at birth control.
Problem #3: As long as substances are prohibited on moral or political grounds, rather than on scientific or public health grounds, hypocrisy is going to be the worst enemy of the "war on drugs". And all the erosion of privacy and other rights and freedoms will remain even when they eventually admit that the war has been lost.
From mad magazine, in a got coke? ad for george w bush for president:
Yes, I did coke. But I didn't inhale. But if you do, I'll put your stoned ass in jail and rehab for the rest of your life. And that's not hypocrisy, that's politics.
I've read stories of the parents of cancer patients growing or buying weed because it helps them to not feel so sick and nautious. So if it helps, and is strictly regulated, why is it "bad"? because people have preconceived notions. Fighting them, even if it is right, rarely works because parents forced into their heads that drugs and druggies are bad.
The saying "free thinkers are dangerous" is especially true. Think for yourself for christ sake.

Yet another example of goverment intervention by uneducated lawmakers at its finest.
Coppa and copa have so far managed to kill off the thomas the train mailing list, a bunch of icq users, and have any children been saved? Better question yet, how many child molesters get their info on who to stalk from a database? Sure, stupid kids get picked up by 30something perverts in chatrooms pretending to be 13 year olds who are obsessed with pop icons. But do the majority of kids get picked up by perverts?
No.
Stupid individuals making stupid laws are a product of special intrest groups. If you don't defend your position and your opposition does, your opposition will usually win.
What seems like common sense to you is probably the smartest thing to do. But if you read slashdot, you are probably educated about technology. So you can think for yourself on issues about technology. Senators and congressmen will be convinced one way or the other by someone who tries to educate them their way. There are 78 million people under 21 in this country. Very few are reported missing each year. Due to special intrest groups, the few bad apples have spoiled the bunch. Don't get me wrong, I think that perverts who abduct and molest kids should be killed very painfully. But laws attempting to stop people from abducting kids are misdirected and futal. They are because of the offensiveness of the crime. Therefore, any proposed solution is sold as the end all solution. Get your senators email. Volunteer to talk against bills opposing technology.
But don't bitch and then do nothing when given the opportunity.

Re:It isn't unconstitutional or wrong
As a law abiding citizen, I'll take you on.
What bad things can come of this? Well, say you (john doe) abides the law. Even if you are a good, law-abiding, tax-paying, authoritah-respecting individual, would you still want a bunch of cops coming to your house, knocking down the door and holding you and your children at gunpoint? To find nothing at all?
I would also like to present something my friend bryan has on his website at softail.visi.com.
Some words to ponder. They may have been written years ago about the actions of a government long sence deposed. However they are something to seriously think about even today.
By Reinhold Niemoller
When Hitler attacked the Jews I was not a Jew, therefore I was not concerned.
And when Hitler attacked the Catholics, I was not a Catholic, and therefore, I was not concerned.
And when Hitler attacked the unions and the industrialists, I was not a member of the unions and I was not concerned.
Then Hitler attacked me and the Protestant church
-- and there was nobody left to be concerned.
In a different varsion:
"First They Came for the Jews"
By Pastor Niemoller
First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me.
Or a modernized version:
When they took the fourth amendment, I was quiet because I didn't deal drugs.
When they took the sixth amendment, I was quiet because I was innocent.
When they took the second amendment, I was quiet because I didn't own a gun.
Now they've taken the first amendment, and I can say nothing about it.
If you so much as think today, I hope you think about your rights. And how much you'll miss them.

Okay, from a TEENAGE web designer, you used blockquote. Which means that you didn't have the time to take the terrible effort of going to htmlwizards.com or webmonkey and take a two minute table tutorial. Blockquote is a nonstandard (not part of html 4), proprietary tag that for unknown reasons completely screws up text formatting, often making it appear in strange fonts and/or italics.
Your page loads fast because the background and all the graphics are very low grade. So low grade, infact, that it took me less than a minute to rekey your logo to reflect the opinion you truly have. http://www.nerdnetwork.net/images/ret hink.jpg
Of course it's easier to diss peoples ideas and work. However, people are tearing you a second asshole because you are doing something people despise. Trying to screw up a public, FREE, useful utility. Next, for all we know, your group could oppose public restrooms because they're free, useful (when you have to piss) and public because, well, it's a public bathroom.
So I, along with most of the rest of the slashdot community, invite you to have a nice tall glass of shut the hell up.

I have friends who *code* ALL of their webpages in frontpage. The other day my friend moogleeater (screenname) asks me if I can fix the table in his html page.
"well it didn't show up in frontpage but it's here and I don't know how to get rid of it. Waaahh!"
Jeez man it took me less than a minute to code out that entire table in notepad, and fix his rollovers (for christ sake frontpage uses java to do simple text rollovers. Ever heard of style tags?
As far as underline, If you were a real web designer like me (who, by the way, coded his entire website, Nerdnetwork.net in notepad) you would know that the underline tag has been depreciated in html 4. So I guess violence isn't necessary. Just my rant of the day.

old news and funny too.
Okay, I think this is too funny for words.
I love my uncle. When I was six he gave me a Commodore 64 to play with. Hell yeah I played with it. I programmed to make the thing talk. And games too. It was great fun. So when I'm seven he gets me an XT because he just got the ungodly fast 386, and all I can say is "damn"! So I played with the xt for a few months, then I took it apart and put it back together.
* And it worked
When dads work upgraded to even faster pentiums & 486's, I got myself a case with a 386 mobo and chip. Yeah guess what happened. Since I knew how the XT worked, I transferred all the components across. Now this 386 was fast, so I got compuserve and the internet, I hung out in chat rooms and computer bulletin boards.
Well as you can imagine, I am now 15, custom build computers, have unix, macOS, windows, and V2 experience, do web design (I know html, dhtml, and am learning WAP, HDML, and XML, and code entirely in notepad), Troubleshoot for peoples computers, have my own websites at Nerdnetwork.net and Greenbuggy.com.
I find the article funny because right now, where I'm standing, My nerdnetwork.net website has only been up for a few months and has several times more hits than dads engineering group. I have 5 separate email addresses, where my dad has only one. My mom and sisters have no email addresses and little internet experience. Whenever I go to moms work her employers come up to me and offer me lunch at leanne chins if I fix whatever problem their network or iMac has.
And my gracious uncle dan has already offered me a job at a computer business where he owns part of it.
But I'm thinking about working at Geeksquad because they have cooler company cars. If only I could drive.

Re:OOG TELL SECRET TO GETTING CHICKS!!!
Dude, share the wealth. It's not like I don't need cave weed too.
I agree about the gender oriented slashdot thing. I usually send them to some of my female friends just to humor them (and don't think they don't get it either. One of them runs a website and is learning C++).
Main reason for my post was to piss off non-psuedointellectual posters by NOT TYPING EVERYTHING IN CAPS LOCK and giving reason why oog gets no lay. Some women find psuedointellegence sexy (but they are few and far between. Which is why slashdot poster may get laid not often, but more than oog).

Re:OOG TELL SECRET TO GETTING CHICKS!!!
OOG has no secrets to getting chicks. Oog idea of getting chicks is fucking them when they're passed out from bleeding because of all the times he smacked them with his club.
Oog reason for smacking chicks over head is because he can't get any otherwise. Reasons? Of course:
OOG SCREAM LIKE HIS VOICE IS STUCK ON CAPS LOCK! NO WOMAN LIKE!
Oog not have shower in cave. Oog smell like long dead cave tiger Oog too cowardly to kill. Which is another reason women no like oog. Oog 93 pound coward. When cave woman wake up after being clubbed in the head cave woman beat Oogs ugly ass up.
Oog have no cave money to take cave woman to fancy restaraunt afterwards oog might actually get some. Oog spent it all on cave beer and cave weed. Oog was so cheap he took all the cave weed and cave beer and gave it to himself so oog ugly stupid cowardly caveman who's stoned with a hangover.
Other reason cave woman hate oog is oog thinks that smart cave woman who might actually be smarter than oog is automatically labeled "unattractive cave woman"
smart cavewoman finds psuedo intellectualism of many slashdot posters attractive. So what if slashdot poster is nerd.
Slashdot poster gets laid more than oog.
Enough said.

Awww, poor RIAA...
Lovely. An organization that promotes the taking away of our freedom as a consumer to reject them (as suppliers of our grossly overpriced CD's) is now losing a battle against the right to choose.
Poor communists.
Next thing you know they'll be putting up billboards that say "got money? We don't" with a picture of a poor boy in some third world country pulling at his pockets trying to find some change. Looking really emotional so the stupid consumer buys another CD to make them another 10 bucks richer.
As has been said before on slashdot, consumers are not entirely stupid to corporate tactics. Rip people off with inflated prices on cd's and cassetes and 45's (for 20 years, I might add) and they will change their supplier of music in a heartbeat when they find out there is an alternative. Don't think they aren't ripping you off. The other day at best buy I see a tupac cd for 20 bucks. A 2cd compilation. $2> for the case, $2> for the two cds, and 18 that goes to the company that makes them. None, I repeat NONE of the money goes to 2pac. He's dead. Duh.
And they suddenly scratch their heads when the consumer finds out about MP3's and napster and goes berzerk finding the best songs out there and they download them. And not having to pay for them.
Piracy, yes.
But most people are only interested in one song from a CD. And go to any music store you find the single (usually the big hit) to be only 1 or 2 dollars less than the full cd. Why waste your money when all you want is one song? Why pay $8-10 for a single song when you get 12 on a full cd for 14? And thats the appeal in napster. Mixing playlists, get the single song for free, all the benefits of digital music.
Does it hurt the artist? Depends on the artist. Lars ulrich would drive up with his gold plated ferrari (and mexican houseboy, I might add*) and convince you that he has to get all his food scraps out of a mcdonalds dumpster. Limp bizkit endorses napster. Limp bizkit is cooler than lars ulrich. Limp bizkit realizes that people who oppose technology are fools. Nevertheless, that's why I just ordered a limp bizkit cd to add to my mp3 collection. Limp supports technology, I support limp. Lars hates technology, I don't give lars jack shit. No wonder all my friends (who previously were kicked off napster) have all since bought limp CD's. Lars doesn't understand that the people who had his MP3's off napster weren't inhuman assholes who had his MP3's just because they wanted to spite and/or rip him off.
They are people who like his music!
Or previously liked, as the case may be.
If lars needs that much more money to spend on sportscars then he should do more concerts. Sell more merchandise. Sign more autographs. Things that fans want and are willing to pay for. Don't let him convince you that selling music is his sole income. Because it's not. And for most artists it will never be.
"One who opposes technology is a fool. But he who tries to stop technology (lars ulrich) is an even greater fool"
And so ends my post. Decide which side you support on your own. Be a free thinker. But be aware that the RIAA is trying to pit artists versus napster, and that isn't the way it should be. Napster is for people who love music. The RIAA should be.
*Campchaos.com, for those who aren't in the know.

Some people are stupid.
Yes boys and girls, some people are stupid.
I'm thinking about getting a job at my dads work because the tech support guy (craig) is not only incompetent but never works on what he is supposed to. One day when he was supposed to be fixing the server he went out to try and poison the birds that eat out of the birdfeeder in front of this business. So not only is he an incompetent, off topic person but a jackass too.
The other day dad comes home and says to me "kris, our mail server has the such-and-such virus. Craig has all the latest virus programs on his computer and not only can't detect it but refuses to fix it. Can you tell craig how to since he's a dumass?"
To which I reply, yes dad I'll look into it.
Dad regularily compliments me on how much smarter I am than craig. I'm 15. He's 30 something.
I swear I could get a job at my dads work as a computer consultant but alas craig is the CEO's son. I could still get a job fixing everything craig is too stupid to and get tips from all the people who's productivity is increased.
What really pisses me off is that I can't drive. Otherwise I could get a job with a local computer co like all systems go (i've gotten job offers) or geeksquad. Bummer.

Goverment intervention. Again.
This is a product of uneducated goverment officials putting in place laws that make no sense and/or piss off and annoy anyone under 21.
Kids aren't stupid. If big bad ICQ man says you can't do it cause you're 11 then they'll hit the back button and type in 18. I do it all the time as a 15 year old because (being a webmaster) many legal clauses require me to be 18 so they can sue me for using their counter or service (god only knows why)
What they don't know can't hurt them, or more importantly, me.
More kids get picked up by pedophiles not by stiffs that have data on 30 million users but by perverts who hang around in britney spears chatrooms claiming they are 13 year old boys who are just as enfatuated with pop icons as these stupid girls. So go ahead, pass these stupid laws, not only will kids lie on the forms but the COPPA acts won't save little jane or johnny from a pervert.
