Re:Big enough to give you everything you want
The majority of Australians *want* the Internet to be filtered, and the government is accountable to *them* not *you*.
I call BS. I haven't met one person who actually said they want internet censorship in Australia.
The government couldn't even give NetAlert away when they tried - nobody wanted it, it was "cracked" by a kid inside of a week, and the few religious zealots who did get it now find themselves unsupported.
Unfortunately the not-quite-majority of Australians who voted Labor at the last election fell for the "look at the silly monkey" trick (the high-speed National Broadband Network) and failed to notice the venomous snake (internet censorship) in the other hand.

Re:Voluntary
I could not find the statistics but I had read that very few were downloaded, and very few were subsequently "updated" (this was poorly defined; could be a database update or software).
It is called NetAlert.

Re:technical ramifications of network filtering
The Government has already provided an opt-in downloadable filter, however the service became a joke as soon as it was deployed.

We should have seen this coming
The ALP's position on this before last year's federal election was that the proposed filtering system was optional; you could opt out of it. However, on 2 November, just weeks before election day, ALP candidate for the seat of Kingsford Smith, Peter Garret, told 2UE journalist Steve Price, "once we get in we'll just change it all". Now that comment was in the context of climate policy, but I guess now we know that it has a somewhat broader application, because the ALP's position has changed post-election to a mandatory filtering system.
Given that there are ISP plans that offer the sort of filtering that the ALP wishes to force on everyone in the country, and that the government already offers client-side filtering packages, free of charge, this post-election flip-flop is nothing sort of treacherous, and if they go ahead with it I suspect that a lot of Australians will be waiting for the ALP at the next poll with metaphorical baseball bats. I, for one, talk to my friends and family about this issue. It's a vote-changer for me, and I take time to make sure that my friends and family understand how this affects them.
Memo any ALP apparatchiks that might have found their way to Slashdot: This is a vote-changing issue. There are many of us who are extremely displeased with the pig-headed way in which the Minister has pursued this matter. The ALP stands to lose many votes over it. There are few votes to be won because nearly all of those you hope to gain over this filtering proposal already go to religious candidates and you have stuff-all chance of changing that. Summary dismissal and form letters that don't even address the issues are no longer good enough. Ignore the users of the internet at your electoral peril. -
Re:It will ruin the politians involved
The Liberals did try to bring in internet censorship under the same sort of system that is currently being rammed through. When their research showed it would slow down the internet and be ineffective anyway, they instead handed out free filtering software for anyone who wanted to install it on their own computer (see: http://www.netalert.gov.au/ ) Unsurprisingly, only a tiny fraction of the population actually wanted the filtering software at all, and after trying it only a fraction of those ever updated it, so the programme was a near complete waste of money.

Re:Is Howard still in office?
Actually, the current state of affairs regarding the porn filter is that it is not isp based.
I've had to order 3 CDs (Safe Eyes) last week.
They still haven't turned up. I ph them and they said that everything was on backorder because there was more and more demand.

Re:84 million dollars?Well, I agree. But you have to assume that if they are willing to go through the expense of buying censorware that they are paying attention to the brat in the first place and the kid isn't listening. If they weren't keeping an eye on them, they why would they care about censorware? Because censorware is a substitute for keeping an eye on kids -- that's the whole point! Instead of actually monitoring your kid's internet use with your own two eyes, asking him what he's been up to, and talking with him about what he should stay away from and (most importantly) why, you get a program to do it for you. Badly.
Also, the censorware in this case is provided free of charge from the government. You didn't think a parent actually spent $84 million of his own money on it, did you? ;) How do you know there is a difference with a kid in something like not listening and viewing porn on the Internet or playing with a gun they found in your room? Uh... you're asking how I know there's a difference between guns and porn? You must be joking. Any 16 year old knows guns can kill people and boobies can't. I guess a question might be, if they fail to listen to you over viewing it and goto the point of subvert any efforts you might take to stop it, then why would you expect them to understand that No mean No when dealing with a real live girl? I mean after all, it is just a couple of boobies. Because anyone who isn't retarded can tell the difference between forcing yourself on a real live person against her will, and looking at a picture that some third party doesn't want you to. One is harmful to another human being. The other merely violates an arbitrary and pointless rule. I know, because when time outs don't work and groundings to your room that has it's own TV, computer, games and all don't work, an ass beating for not listening should take care of the problem. It'll seem to take care of the problem, until they knife you in your sleep for being an abusive bastard. Or maybe they'll just keep it in the back of their head until the day comes to choose your nursing home.
Jesus, this isn't rocket science. Take the TV, computer, and games out of the room if you're sending the kid there as punishment. And if you're so concerned about his internet browsing, the computer should be in a more visible place anyway. Yes, I suppose they have. But lets not let that allow us to look past the fact that there might be some truth in what they are saying. If there were any truth to it, it'd be reflected in crime statistics. And, unfortunately for their grasp on reality and their relevance to today's society, it isn't. The murder rate in the US in 2005 was as low as it's been since 1966. I mean you seem to think every old person fears whatever change and are dogging on you because of your actions. I don't know where you came up with that. I haven't said a thing about my actions, or anyone "dogging" on me. You're the one who brought up seniors in the first place.
I'm just pointing out that seniors have always complained about the younger generation; when you were a kid, seniors then were complaining about your generation, just as Plato complained about the kids of his time. Those complaints don't prove anything, especially not a decline over time, because they're constantly there no matter what. I'm betting that the only reason you find that wrong is because you on of the people who are doing things wrong all the time and don't want to be made to listen. Well, you're losing that bet. Would you rather send a check or PayPal?
I find it wrong because I believe in human rights and dignity. Inflicting pain on someone in order to enforce your will is wrong, period. It's especially wrong when they're smaller than you, dependent on you, and helpless to fight back. There's no excuse for that, and the kind of thugs who do such a thing should be stripped of parental rights and castrated to prevent them from harming any more children. -
Re: and the actual filtersSee the Australian gov't page. They are simply using off-the-shelf proxy filters. (It's nice to see that the Mac filter supports IE 7. How?) It shouldn't be too difficult to bypass these. I don't think half an hour should be needed.
As the site says:
PLEASE NOTE: Internet content filters are a tool to be used in conjunction with parental supervision they do not provide total protection in themselves.

Someone to try and pass on some details, please
Read all comments up to here.
I'm really curious to know a tad more. Can one of those three in here, who actually run Windows, be kind enough and give it a try ? It is here:
http://netalert.gov.au/filters.html
You have to give an e-mail address, and an Australian postcode (if memory serves right, 4 digits).
And here is the honourable Mistress, eeh Ministress:
http://netalert.gov.au/news_and_events.html
She doesn't look like resisting the offer of some decent indecent products. Actually, to her looks, she could have been in this business until short time ago:
