The war over 1-Click is over. Amazon won. BN.com is still open. Nobody cares any more.
For a related topic, see how the League for Programming Freedom got their panties in a bunch about Apple, calling for a boycott of all Apple products. They later rescinded that boycott, except their about-face took less than a year.
I hear the rainforest is still in need of saving, if you'd like a cause celebre... -

Re:how about dual-plaintext messages?
"I really want a cryptosystem where I can enter, say, two different plaintexts (of similar length, I imagine) and then there are two keys: the private key, and the decoy key.If required to give up "your private key" then give up the decoy key. The decoy plaintexts decrypts, and you're done. The real plaintext is still hidden away."
Marutukku (formerly RubberHose) is designed to do that (with more levels - no matter how many keys you reveal it's impossible to prove there aren't more) although their website seems to be down at the moment, and I don't remember it being updated for a while. Apparently BSD has it (might explain it's death ;-) -
Will this work with BSD?
IMPORTANT UPDATE: Please show your support for Ceren in this poll of Geek Babes!
Is it any wonder people think Linux users are a bunch of flaming homosexuals when its fronted by obviously gay losers like these?! BSD has a mascot who leaves us in no doubt that this is the OS for real men! If Linux had more hot chicks and gorgeous babes then maybe it would be able to compete with BSD! Hell this girl should be a model!
Linux is a joke as long as it continues to lack sexy girls like her! I mean just look at this girl! Doesn't she excite you? I know this little hottie puts me in need of a cold shower! This guy looks like he is about to cream his pants standing next to such a fox. As you can see, no man can resist this sexy little minx. Don't you wish the guy in this pic was you? Are you telling me you wouldn't like to get your hands on this ass?! Wouldn't this just make your Christmas?! Yes doctor, this uber babe definitely gets my pulse racing! Oh how I envy the lucky girl in this shot! Linux has nothing that can possibly compete. Come on, you must admit she is better than an overweight penguin or a gay looking goat! Wouldn't this be more liklely to influence your choice of OS?
With sexy chicks like the lovely Ceren you could have people queuing up to buy open source products. Could you really refuse to buy a copy of BSD if she told you to? Personally I know I would give my right arm to get this close to such a divine beauty!
Don't be a fag! Join the campaign for more cute open source babes today!

Re:While live cd's are an interesting idea
To give one example where a Live CD is incredibly useful: I recently used a custom NetBSD Live CD for a programming contest -- all machines at two locations needed to be absolutely identical and using a Live CD obliterates the hassle of installing a new OS or reconfiguring your current setup in any way -- just pop in the CD, boot, done.
See this link and this link for details. -

Dispelling the GNU/FUD, once again... :-(FUD:
Objectively speaking? The NetBSD so-called desktop is about 5 or 6 years behind the times. The NetBSD desktop in reality (as opposed to the hype) is nothing more than a copy of emacs running in an twm xterm. With a little luck you should be able to get xclock and xclipboard running so as to enhance your NetBSD "desktop".Facts:

Supported hardware
If you would like to see the supported hardware for x86, here is the link. It might save someone a few seconds if you just want to see what the current state of drivers is. And, in my case, it was good: they support both cardbus ethernet adaptors in my laptop, which is what I was looking for.

This statement alone..."Any hope that there might be innovation coming from there at some point is clearly illusory, and with attitudes like that from its developers, BSD is clearly also useless as a platform for research."

Re:NetBSD 2.0 is the tenth major release
Umm, no. They changed their version numbering scheme. So what we see here as 2.0 is what probably would have been 1.7. Basically they stripped the first number (because it would have been 1 forever) and go now with a 2 number scheme. the next major release will be 3.0. what was once minor releases x.y.z->x.y.(z+1) now will be x.y->x.(y+1).
-
Re:Let me know when...
I don't blame you, especially since screen isn't available for NetBSD.

Re:Hooray!!
With NetBSD's design I doubt they have a lot of headaches even with many archs. If there's a bug in a chipset driver probably all archs using it are affected and there's only one place to fix it.
The main advantage of having 48 archs is not to actually run NetBSD on each and every one of them productively. It's to abstract your code to such levels that a Realtek NIC is using the very same source on i386 as it does on alpha or sparc. A Realtek on an ISA bus is probably using the same source as one on PCI. And an equal PCI chipset on i386 and alpha is using the same source again. Everything is held together by well-designed glue APIs. Independent of 32bit, 64bit, big endian, little endian, etc. Try to compile your Linux app of the day on something else than 32bit i386..
Really, it's beatiful, you can compile the whole system natively or for a completely different arch by just specifying -m to the build.sh script. It boostraps a self-contained (cross-)compiler environment on any decent POSIXish system. And in the parts that are native to NetBSD you don't get a single compiler warning. The imported GNU utils on the other hand...
'nuff said, try NetBSD! -
Re:What are NetBSD's strengths?You are missing point.
Note that NetBSD disables *ALL* services by default, but OpenBSD opens some services by default. Thus, obviously NetBSD is more secure by default.
> -no propolice
You can use gcc-ssp (newer version of proplice) on pkgsrc for any daemons you'd like
> -no W^X
You are just wrong. NetBSD 2.0 already has this. See below.
NetBSD supports PROT_EXEC permission
(depends on platform, though) -
54 archs ?
Not to flame, but I've often wondered how true this statement is. It seems as if a whole bunch of the archs are "quasi-archs". Meaning the under-lying core is still based on a fairly standardized CPU arch. An example is hpcram, which is based on the StrongARM cpu
...
Also, the offical release says 48 archs, not 54 as in the slashdot story
And finally, some asshole named Zafer Aydogan stole my NetBSD Toaster dmesg. Real original can be found at the NYCBUG *BSD dmesg project. (Very funny read!)
Cool, enough random crap from me, heh

Both the TI OMAP and the Intel PXA are ARM-architecture. The OMAP is pretty much a standard ARM-9, and the PXA is specifically mentioned on the evbarm page. -

Re:QuestionsWhat does the PR count count?
PR = Problem Reports, containing both submissions of new packages for pkgsrc, as well as problems with existing problems. Some of them with fixes included and easy to fix, others with no fixes included and only happening when you run them on some obscure configurations at full moon.
Is the pkgsrc tree the source tree for the entire distribution?
No, NetBSD is a complete operating system on it's own, with a defined set of functionality and programs, all in one source tree[1]. Additional 3rd party software for building a webserver, database server, desktop system etc. can be installed from either pkgsrc or a precompiled (binary) package.
- Hubert[1] See cvsweb.netbsd.org for a web interface to the complete source of the operating system, running on 50+ hardware platforms in the "src" module.

x86 is vendor-neutral? Aren't "386", "486" "586" Intel brand names?
IMHO, just like we give credit for Intel by calling it "the x86 architecture", we should give credit to AMD for the amd64 architecture. NetBSD too prefers amd64. -

Exactly. I was thinking of NetBSD myself, and I am even on minority hardware, so I don't even have the Linux emulation option. I'm hopeful for Kaffe, but I'm not holding my breath.

Re:Free?
Yes, as a fellow minor platform user myself, I've often wished I could just grab the source and build it myself. It's possible to run Java apps on my system, but they run in Linux compatability mode, which means the classpath is all wacky (paths all relative to root of emulated Linux system, not to real root, etc.)

BSDers bet on gorgeous Ceren

Re:Why all this hate? D:
Docs that are actually more or less equivilant to the Gentoo stuff you linked to:
FreeBSD faq
NetBSD guide
OpenBSD FAQ
As I said, the installation instructions on both are outstanding. Where the BSDs pull ahead is the man pages. Every aspect of the system is meticulously documented, in an accessible and concise way.
Gentoo specific things tend to be documented well, but things inherited from other Linuxes tend to inherit their documentation as well, which is poor. The Gentoo guides tell you magic invocations, sometimes even several alternatives, but the actual man (or info) page for the tool is just as weak as other Linuxes. It's a lot worse for the C library and system call man pages.
Gentoo docs are better than most Linuxes (at least the ones I've tried), but that's not saying much. -
Re:Why all this hate? D:When you speak about *BSD docs, you're talking about this? Or this? Or this one?
I know I'm probably feeding a troll, but I won't let you get away with bashing the best Gentoo feature. BSD docs are a huge pile of paper, when compared to the nicely organised, professional documentation on Gentoo.org. As much as writing stuff down, it's important to make it findable.
Just go and compare the sites.

Re:Which distros?
i'm running an athlon64 2800 on an nforce3 motherboard on gentoo and all the integrated peripherals work great (although i haven't tested firewire, parallel, or serial, but they show up in dmesg so i think it's fine). i kind of stupidly bought a radeon 9200... but it works and it has dri and framebuffer support, so i'm ok. the 64bit thing works wonderfully, and they even have a 32bit emulation option in the kernel. just for kicks, i turned it off and rebooted... it went just fine, all except for grub (which is only available for 32bit archs), but the emulation works around that.
i picked gentoo because it had better support for nforce3 motherboards than freebsd did at the time. also, slackware's boot kernel didn't support my sata drive. debian would have done the job, but i don't really care for it. mandrake and suse also have 64bit distros, but they were not free as in beer when i bought this computer... you may want to check, if you like those distros. fedora core 1 has support for amd64, and there are most likely a few other distros too.
openbsd, netbsd, and freebsd support it too. if you want to run something weirder than that, athlon64 processors support 32bit stuff too, the slackware install kernel booted on my machine.
