  1. Syslog + chattr on DSS/HIPPA/SOX Unalterable Audit Logs? · · Score: 5, Insightful

I use syslog-ng to relay information from several different datacenters to a centralized and secure location hosting all of the syslog information. Each DC has its own syslog-ng system acting as the local relay, transporting syslog information from local clients using TCP over a VPN to the centralized host. The logs are written on the central syslog sever organized by on date and hostname, and each file that is created is then assigned an 'append-only' bit using chattr. It works really well.

I don't know if I'd label the examples used in the Article as 'Nerds' per say. David Arquette, Tiger Woods, and Adam Brody aren't probably coding some new linux module. Besides, they aren't really 'nerds' or 'geeks' anyway. If Christina Aguilera was hooking up with say, Richard Stallman, then yeah maybe I'd consider this a valid point. It seems as though instead of being a nerd, the image of being slightly geeky is considered in style.

Tunneling the traffic doesn't mean you can run your own code. Unless nintendo creates a telephony app for the system, you won't be able to use it as a VoIP phone. The difference between playing it online and playing it simply amongst a local 'pod' of users, is that the traffic is intercepted and tunneled across the wired internet; Where as the ability to play against your local 'pod' depends on the availability of other DS's. For this particular application, There is no modification on the DS side of things.

  13. The Online Currency? on iTunes Accepts PayPal · · Score: 2, Insightful

It would be really neat to see where paypal could take a currency system. For now, many online stores prices are posted in the local currency in use, whether it be American or Canadian Dollar, the Euro, etc. If any form of online trading becomes universal and widely adopted, prices could be posted in paypal dollars; call them Paydols (I dunno... work with me). If prices were posted in Paydols it might transition to the physical world---you could pay for goods at a store with X amount of Paydols instead. If you could buy most things with a Paydol account, people might accept payments. You could transfer money from person to person with cell-phone administration of your paypal account. Obviously, I'm getting carried away, but having a system like iTunes accepting paypal transactions could be a big step on a long-road to a universal currency.

Certainly the donkey has endured some sort of humiliation. On a serious note however, what is the point of Google censoring these images? I can't see them directly gaining anything by doing so. If I do a search for Abu Ghraib, it's a high-possibility I know about the scandal, so I'm going to expect to see those images anyway. Certainly this image isn't any less disturbing. I wonder if the Military has the copyright on those photos (saracasm). Maybe we'll see 'Army ordres Abu Ghraib Photos taken off website' on Chilling Effects
