Rubbish
it's Microsoft IIS that has picked up share.
No. Microsoft picked up a bunch of parked domains and its long term trend is still down, even for parked domains. In terms of active sites, Microsoft's trend is steadily down, now around 12% and sinking. And it is indeed nginx that is mainly picking up share from Apache, though Google is hanging in there pretty well too. This puff piece glosses over the one fact that can't be denied: Linux servers rule the web by a large and increasing margin.

Not the first time either
I'm beginning to wonder if GoDaddy's web server policy follows the solar cycle...
:)From the look of Netcraft's graph, prior to the GoDaddy move it looked like most of the marketshare lost from apache went straight into nginx (itself also frequently used as a caching proxy/frontend to another web server on the backend) so I'm not quite sure what the summary/TFA are trying to imply.

Re:The SSL "problem"

More the options to get logs in real time or over time.
~"all previous searches would be revealed where logged traffic is available"
So the US has the big firms covered and has set up a "standard" to get into any other server/telco/network if needed. -
Re:SSL protects the search queries?
http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2013/06/25/ssl-intercepted-today-decrypted-tomorrow.html
"for example if one of their servers were seized — all previous searches would be revealed where logged traffic is available." is the real worry long term. -
No PFS at DDG
DuckDuckGo, a search engine, has been prominent in the media since the start of the Snowden revelations due to its privacy policy which promotes anonymity. If the private key used by DuckDuckGo were ever compromised — for example if one of their servers were seized — all previous searches would be revealed where logged traffic is available. DuckDuckGo may be a particularly interesting target for the NSA due to its audience and the small volume of traffic (as compared to Google).
This is because DDG does not use crypto algorithms which support perfect forward secrecy.
When PFS is used, the compromise of an SSL site's private key does not necessarily reveal the secrets of past private communication; connections to SSL sites which use PFS have a per-session key which is not revealed if the long-term private key is compromised. The security of PFS depends on both parties discarding the shared secret after the transaction is complete (or after a reasonable period to allow for session resumption).
So it would require significantly more work for NSA to deal with a site using PFS. Source: netcraft

Re:They tried scare tactics with OpenBSD
Some info of SSL here http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2013/06/25/ssl-intercepted-today-decrypted-tomorrow.html
Seems the "private key" is the key in many ways too :) "for example if one of their servers were seized — all previous searches would be revealed where logged traffic is available." -
Re:Oh thank ${DIETY}
What exactly do you mean by "Google spies"? As far as we can tell, Google protects your privacy much better than anybody else: For Chrome they document precisely what they send home, most of this can be switched off. They provide source code to most of Chrome and Android, so people can actually check what's being sent. Android mostly sends home only what's required for their services, e.g. they send home location information only if you use wifi location services. Their browsers and servers support much better data protection than anybody else's. Both Microsoft and Apple are much worse here. And the biggest data leak are the carriers anyway, they always get to know where you are and who you call. So what exactly could any other mobile OS do better than Google when it comes to privacy?

Re:Visual Studio for ASP.NET
With nearly 10x more users than 6 months before
Those figures are for IIS 8 specifically, not IIS in general. That just means a new version was released, and while only one guy way using it 6 months ago, there's now a few hundred active instances, so the statistics fly all to hell...
you are also hard pressed to find a graph which shows less than 40% IIS usage.
Netcraft says all Microsoft web servers, combined, total just 12% of active sites, as of Feb 2013: Google's own custom, in-house web server may soon surpass IIS in market share.
Meanwhile, Apache and nginx total 67% of the market.

He's also correct that Linux proper, as on PC's, does get exploited, but not as much since it is in "last place" by a HUGE margin as opposed to Windows &/or MacOS X in terms of marketshare/usership on PC desktops!
Thus, it truly HAS been hiding behind "security-by-obscurity", & Android shows that much on smartphones (where it IS "king", displacing Apple's iOS).
I've seen Linux be exploited on servers too though (where it has a valid 'niche' & is OFTEN used)...

Android (yes, a Linux) shows us all that on smartphones.
* You Penguins really don't ever want to see "the year of Linux on the desktop", trust me, since what we're seeing on smartphones is only a "portent of things to come"!
(Well, that is IF Linux ever takes the most used/most marketshare on PC desktops, that is).
Linux isn't some "magical security panacea": It's hiding behind "security-by-obscurity" on the desktop.
What shows anyone this much? Well, again - See what happened on smartphones & ANDROID (linux)?
Linux also has about a 50/50 split with servers in the Fortune 100-500, & what's happening THERE, now that it's achieved a decent % of total use there?

"A new Linux rootkit has emerged and researchers who have analyzed its code and operation say that the malware appears to be a custom-written tool designed to inject iframes into Web sites and drive traffic to malicious sites for drive-by download attacks. The rootkit is designed specifically for 64-bit Linux systems."

Anything built to withstand DDoS
During holidays (just a side effect on security really for them, it's MORE "uptime" under load stress & duration)? Is done right!
However, it looks like they did some reboots recently (as far as "uptime checking"):
http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph?site=amazon.com
Is it me? Did I misread that?? Thanks for correcting me if I'm seeing things. Could have been upgrade/update reboots though in prep for the shopping season.
* Anyhow - There's no questions asked, that for taking loads of usage @ once simultaneously like nearly probably very little does out there to the same extent & durations that's not scripted/automated, but rather dealing with people? They're a good example of solid design.
APK
P.S.=> Probably costs them in bandwidth to NO end, as well as facilities cooling etc./et al, but they built well (especially bandwidth & monitoring vs. DDoS, & not really the malicious kind initially, like I remember "anonymous" tried & failed in... As again - they did it from what I understand, MOSTLY to deal with huge "holiday rushes" from customers - the security benefit is more stability, but a nice side effect of overbuilding your network infrastructure!)...
