The history of the internet disagrees with you. If by "hardly anyone" you mean the thousands of users of ARAPNET which spanned the US with hundreds of servers by the time this so-called person "invented" email. "In 1971, Ray Tomlinson, of BBN sent the first network e-mail (RFC 524, RFC 561).[57] By 1973, e-mail constituted 75 percent of ARPANET traffic."

You have that backwards. The Internet was originally designed for command and control of critical (military) infrastructure.

Actually not. ARPAnet was designed to tie a few dozen facilities doing government research together using a packet switching network and allow them to communicate via a common protocol (TCP/IP). The notion that one would use a publically accessible packet switching network for military command and control would have been instantly rejected back then. (And, one would hope still would be today).

Depending on what you consider email, it was going strong in the 70s and there were proto-email systems back in the 60s, whereas Postel's email RFC is from 1982.

Tomlinson.. I was using rudimentary store/forward e-mail in 1976..
Don't however confuse that to a lawyer making an obtuse argument of invention to get money. I would have argued that since e-mail is a concept and not a product that it's not subject to ownership but maybe copyright.

There's a lot of merit in this story I think, but ultimately it muddies the waters. Certainly, it's claim that government-funded research played a less than key role in the development of internetworking seems to be just plain false.

First of all, the work Xerox did that most resembles the Internet protocols was not Ethernet, but PARC Universal Packet (PUP), which is indeed quite directly comparable to the IP in TCP/IP. Ethernet, while a terrific piece of work, mostly served to facilitate networking within a single site.

The article also says implies that the Government-funded ARPANET wasn't really the precursor of the Internet. I think that's an over-simplification. Arpanet wasn't the very first packet switching network (see the work of Baran and Davies), and it certainly wasn't an Internet (network of networks), but it really was the direct antecedent of the Internet as we know it. Arpanet connected universities and other research establishments. It proved the viability of a packet-switching network with all the application smarts at the periphery of the network. In almost all cases, what had been Arpanet connections among the early sites evolved (sometimes by way of NSFnet) to TCP/IP Internet connections, running essentially the same applications and services. So, in all those ways, Arpanet was a crucial step on the way to our TCP/IP-based Internet, and of course, ARPANET was government funded.

The record there strongly suggests that Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf were discussing approaches to internetworking (connecting networks) in spring of 1973. Interestingly, the official PARC Research Report on PUP actually cites the Internet work of Cerf and Kahn, specifically their 1974 A Protocol for Packet Network Intercommunication.

So, the government-funded work on internetworking seems to have started before the Xerox work, and the Xerox research time explicitly cited Cerf and Kahn as sources of inspiration for the Xerox work on internetworking. Wouldn't it be nice of the WSJ article made all that clear before everyone started using these over simplifications to prove the futility of government-funded research?

The US did not make the Internet. Quoting from this history, "The earliest pioneers included a Frenchman, Louis Pouzin, who introduced the idea of data grams and an Englishman, Donald W. Davies, who was one of the inventors of packet-switching. Another of the great pioneers in Britain was Peter T. Kirstein, who went to America at the beginning of the Arpanet in 1969 when it was decided that Davies could not go for reasons of national security." And of course as we all know Tim Berners-Lee, another Englishman, invented the web.

Seems like Exchange copied the email idea, and email was used to generate "meeting requests" a long time before a patent troll figured out Microsoft could patent the concept...

Piece of SOLID (and yes, actually friendly) advice - don't go advertising that you do hotmail like that for one thing, and secondly? With your IP address, I can "zero in" pretty much within 50-100 miles of your location. That's not much to worry about, but I can resolve who your hosting provider is, and with evidence like you stating you fake hotmails and such?? It's enough to put you on a tracking ticket. I know, I worked for one of the worlds LARGEST BSP's in 2003-2004 in their NOC, and know what happens, and it doesn't take much for that to occur (tracking tickets/surveillances of users).

Now, since you claim to do that, and apparently from behind a corporate firewall? Clue #2: Your company has an ISP just like any other does, and they too can be surveilled as to "nefarious goings on" too, don't fool yourself that they cannot be. Once you pulled a dirty enough trick, they'd come down on your company to find out who YOU are (sometimes w/ the law, if what you're up to with those faked emails of yours are bad enough).

You could read it all (oh, we KNOW you can, you're just trying to "play smart" again, only to look illiterate on YOUR part, lol... some "trade off" for trolling, eh?).

Maybe you should read up about that. There were somewhat equivalent systems running in other countries at the same time as ARPAs. A lot of the research was not done by americans, and the WWW concept was done by an Englishman. When did the net take off ? Before or after the web ?
