Re:Mythical man month
The analogy of 10 men working each for 1/10 of a month is not accurate. If you have 10 men working each for 1/3 of a month, the overall time (not parallel) it takes will be less than that of 1 man for 1 month.
This only works if each swarming entity is not important (or expensive) by itself.

If you search google with "google: v", the first result is info about Google's struggle with the church of Scientology:

Re:New vulnerabilities
But previously if you learned of a BIND vulnerability, you could hijack ALL of the root servers, redirecting 100% of requests to your site. Now, if there is a single vulnerability in either system the hijacking could only affect a portion of the system, not the entire internet.

Wha?!
Is Linux a legitimate solution to school districts facing a financial crunch?
While I agree that it is, I think you're asking the wrong crowd. It's like asking a recording industry executive "Is Napster evil?".
If you have to ask slashdot "Is linux a legitimate solution" you probably aren't a slashdot regular!

Re:It's a shame..
I don't think its a shame... If they released products and expansions more often, you can be sure the quality would go down. One thing that keeps Blizzard games good is their commitment to the development process. (Some companies say they have a commitment to it, Blizzard has proven it)

When can we see...
It goes without saying that most of the numbers on the list will be existing, connected numbers. When can we see somebody sell this list to an out of country company, who will the call every number on the list?

$16 million per year?!
So why does it cost so much? I could run a database with millions of records for WAY less than that...
Just another example of our tax dollars hard at work!

Black boxes the problem? or not defensive coding?
Is this a problem with using the "black box" mentality, or a failure to do defensive design and coding?
If your programmers code and design defensively, even the black box approach will succeed. No input can every truly be guaranteed to follow a certain spec. No user will always act like you expect. No system will ever be setup exactly like you planned.
Keep these things in mind, and your project will be robust!

Re:Public Companies part of the problem?
I work for a privately owned company. We run a couple of small phone centers, and that mentality has permeated everything here. Cheaper is better.
We are not tiny ($25 million last year), and are expanding internationally, but I don't believe being publicly traded, or privately owned has anything to do with how employees are treated.
Its all about company culture, and the people at the top (private and public) are the people who set the culture.

Ahem!
Worst article ever!
That aside, I'm not sure I agreed, but with 300 episodes (and everything being relative), I'm sure they have the right to their opinion...
It's just that their opinion is wrong...

OT, but...
Human synapses don't do a single mathematical calculation per second. I don't know what the measurement is, but I know that not all brain cells do mathematical based calculations..

Re:overkill?
The current systems don't do as well on HDTV sets as they do on normal TVs. Another failing of the current systems is that they only have enough power to render full details of some games, when in single player mode. Bring in another camera or 2 and the detail drops.
There is still a market for more powerful game machines, and the developers always will find a use for eye-candy.

"... To give one example of where this is heading, I think that Samba will still have to rely on reverse engineering."
Unfortunately, that is probably (or will soon be) illegal via the DMCA.

Re:Would that force the switch to wavelet (JPEG200
The GIF fiasco did lead people to create (and even support PNG), but honestly, GIF is still used way more, just because ALL the graphics designers out there know about it, and everything supports its creation and display.
I believe the same thing will happen with this JPEG patent. JPEG2K will become a fully functional spec, but the original JPEG will still rule (except in things like the GTK)

Nobody I've seen noticed this
The researcher noted that the people who played the most games "got angry easily, couldn't concentrate, and had trouble associating with friends."
What is the cause and effect here? Does game playing cause people to be social misfits, or do the begin playing games because they already ARE social misfits.
The interesting study would be to create a group of heavy game players from the 'normal' group, to see if their personalities change because of games.
