Re:Funny, but irrelevantThe UK newspaper The Guardian had an article on this - here - with some details on the method - basically work out the average amount of beer taken up by the tache per sip, the average amount of sips per pint, and the average number of pints per year. Hence the way to minimise the loss is either:
- Take fewer sips. Encourage your bearded friends to do this by shouting 'down in one!'.
- Take less time between sips. This means that the beard is already saturated and absorbs no more beer. Encourage your bearded friends to do this by shouting 'drink!' </Father Ted>

Re:Human rights?Doesn't this conflict with the Human Rights?
It's certainly an erosion of civil rights. But it's just the latest example in a long line. There was an article in yesterday's Guardian by Madsen Pirie, president of the Adam Smith institute, on how successive governments have eroded civil rights in Britain by passing laws aimed at particular groups of offenders. Depressing stuff.

japanese company patents curryAlso in the news today, the House Foods company of Japan is attempting to patent the means for cooking curry in that country.
Perhaps Intel is being too modest - maybe they should just patent computing? (hey, that's a joke, not a troll)

Bad thing
I've been watching this debate for a while, and like most (rational) people I've come to the conclusion that it's a bad thing. Unfortunately, it does sound reasonable. The Guardian had a story on the subject (registration may be required; can't remember) that points out how nasty those cybersquatting bastards are, so the politicians are pandering to the laziness in everyone who couldn't be arsed digging beyond the superficial squatiness of bradpitt.com.

Here is a link about the Kissinger interview.

Re:Paxman should be good
It will be interesting to see if Bill Gates will last longer than Henry Kissinger - here is a link. There is also a web site for submitting questions.

Concepts of Halo and new graphics tech (on /.)?'s
I believe that it may be a bit rude to ask directly about another product, however I would like to know what possibilities that you believe exist on dynamically stored map/landscape that changes as the game progresses (ex: a rocket blasts a piece of rock from a celing and the rubble crushes someone else and remains a barrier while providing a hole in the celing to the sky and level of the map above). I would also like to know how hard it would be to implement somthing along these lines with respect to programming time and any potential hardware limitations of the current market. Additionally there was a facinating article about a graphics technology that was invented/developing in Austrailia on slashdot a couple days ago that involved 3D imaging I was wondering what you though of this technology from a viability and implementation (if viable) prospective and how it could change both the hardware and software markets for products based on visualization?

location
According to the Manchester Guardian 150 people lived within a 350 yard radius of the facility.
To have a facility like this in a residential area was asking for trouble. -
Hear hear!
This is just PR. It has nothing to do with Monsanto's core business of selling GM food plants and pesticides. Monsanto has a terrible image in
.uk at the moment ( although mostly for "eek! Frankenstein food" reasons, and not it's appalling business ethics); this is the second pro-Monsanto story that's made it into the uk press in the last week or so (search at the Guardian for "Monsanto hints at u-turn on GM food in Britain" for another); looks like they got themselves some new PR consultants. -
More problems then just Doom
"The school was cliquish and extremely divided. There was a lot of tension between groups. It was almost continuous conflict between each one. The abuse from the jocks was physical and verbal: rocks and soft drink cans were thrown from passing cars on the way to school. Theydid it to everyone. Then the jocks began to focus on the Trenchcoat Mafia as the year went on because they were different..."
Words from a member of the Trenchcoat Mafia as quoted in todays Guardian newspaper
It seems to me that the school had a lot more problems then a few people with internet access playing doom.
