The Most Important Part of the Ceremony
I had the privilage of attending the awards last night for the first time. It was a ton of fun. My friends and I threw about a half ream of paper airplanes from the balcony and of course got some good laughs from the prizes that others have mentioned. But by far the most disturbing event of the night was the 2003 Biology Prize winner again showing his (first ever) documentation of of homosexual necrophilia in the mallard duck. http://www.nmr.nl/deins815.htm
If any one is in the Cambridge/Boston area this Saturday there is a free lecture at MIT during which the laureates will describe more about their research.
Note: This may well be the only time that "homosexual necrophilia" has been used in a non-troll /. post. -
Drake on Drake
You haven't seen everything on the internet if you haven't seen this scientific report on mallard drakes.

Re:What does he have on you, Bill?At the aquarium where I work we have a gay domestic couple of penguins... It's really cool.
Be careful turning to nature for guidance as to what is morally acceptable, lest you be cornered into defending nonstop drake-on-drake necrophilia. Better to just say "I'm cool with that" than to turn to avian examples.

Feral robot DUCKS?!
How does this part of the research tie in with the article?- if anyone can explain, I'd love to hear.

Ehhh....just look at Interplay.
Interplay has all but died, but we don't see them selling off their worthwhile licenses. Instead, they're just leveraging the FallOut name to garner new investment.
I'm afraid the demise of poorly managed companies just leads to the firing of the real employees, but leaves the poorly managed franchises. Hence, the necrophilic anal-raping that FallOut is getting.

Ducks. Yeah.
From the article:
"Working the ICANN process is like being nibbled to death by ducks," said Tom Galvin, VeriSign's vice president for government relations. "It takes forever, it doesn't make sense, and in the end we're still dead in the water."
Yeah. Nibbled to death by ducks. That sounds good.
Mallard Ducks.
Well, we can dream, at least... -
And of course
Any discussion of birds and their tendancy to suicide on windows needs a reference to the first recorded case of homosexual duck necrophilia
-
Re:This is old and misleading news
And afterwards some birds do worse things with the remains: Duck necrophilia
-
Get yer facts straight!Mallards aren't frogs!!!
This above post is entirely factually correct.

Re:I knew it.
Well Look and find out.

Really Quacked Me Up
Having a platonic fondness for ducks, I was intrigued by Dr. Moeliker's report. Reading the paper left me pondering the nature of a universe in which:
- A scientist spends 75 minutes watching one dead animal rape another's corpse.
- Said scientist collects and dissects the deceased victim, producing a six-page report (with citations!)
- I actually read this report when I really should be doing something else with my time.
Perhaps Dr. Moeliker's work stands as a monument to the curiosity of the human mind, and the need to laugh even as we ponder insane questions. At least he didn't duck the issues...
