May of 2002, I must be new here.
Since, I'm not a programmer, or wasn't at a University in the late 80's, my first exposure to X was in 2002 on a wacky Red Hat 6 variant on a wacky MIPS variant. In fact it was Slashdot where I first heard about Linux, so I'm a johnny-come-lately.
Since the machine ran RH6, it was a fairly standard distro of that time period, Windowmaker was the default window manager, though others were installed, KDE1, Gnome 1 something or other, FVWM. Default desktop looked something like this:

Yes, my first exposure to X was on a PS2.

try the L-TracX
Clearly Superior Technologies has a trackball called the L-TracX. Laser optical tracking, runtime switchable resolution (in the hardware), stainless steel rollers.
And of course the ball is standard pool-ball sized, so you can do this:

Svnwiki, of course
I would suggest using svnwiki, a wiki system that stores its whole contents in a Subversion repository (Disclaimer: I am the main author of svnwiki). That allows you to use the usual svn commands (svn diff, svn log, svn update, etc.) to work with your wiki as well as using the web interface.
You can see an example wiki (in spanish) and its associated svn repository (login as anonymous, password is the empty string; Slashdot seems to strip out this auth information from my URL) to get an idea of what the repository looks like.
These are examples of some of its features:
- PDF generation
- Tagging for articles
- Parsing access logs to generate stat pages (properly integrated with everything)
- Syntax highlighting (uses GNU enscript, so it supports around 50 languages)

Re:how to upgrade?
Install apt and Kynaptic (use yast for that), with them is easier to install programs. You can do a quick search in the web: apt suse repository
I am sure you are able to discover the rest.

Re:Ob South Park Reference
the people on nova pull them off satelites up to a week before they air.
"(Q) Why are some eps out before they air and some after?
Some networks (Fox, WB) encrypt their wildfeed, meaning that certain eps can not be capped sucessfully. Other networks may adopt encryption, so don't count on eps being available until after they air.
This is new to the 2003-4 season, so shows you were able to get before they aired last year may not be available until after airing starting this season.
(Q) What are wildfeeds?
Wildfeeds are a transmission by the network to distribute the episode before it airs around to the tv relay stations. You need to be in the correct location and have a large satelite dish in order to receive them.
