Re:The 74-minute story
One thing you youngsters have to realize about classical music is that the duration of various pieces is not set in stone. It's left up to the conductor, (or, the musicians, if there is no conductor). For instance, Glenn Gould has two recordings of the Goldberg Variations. The 1955 version lasts 38.5 minutes, the 1981 version; 51.25 minutes.
There's a 24 hour version of the ninth. That's extreme, but performances usually take 60 to 80 minutes -
Re:1 CM larger?
The longest known performance lasted 74 minutes. This was a mono recording made during the Bayreuther Festspiele in 1951 and conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler. This therefore became the playing time of a CD. A diameter of 12 centimeters was required for this playing time.
Too bad they hadn't made 9 Beet Stretch yet. -
Du Arschloch! Proper (sortof) German translation

My German is a bit rusty, I am not a native speaker, but I think that should be:

9 Beet Stretch
Here's a copy of Beethoven's 9th stretched out to 24 hours. The algorhythm used is superb, and the end result is amazing.

24 hours of symphony 9For those of you who can't have enough of Beethoven, or are just slow in listening to music, there is a 24 hour version of the 9th symphony.
It can be found here.

Re:DSP farm?I did find this interesting summary of the current (as of late October) state of running VSTs under Linux: http://www.djcj.org/LAU/quicktoots/toots/vst-plug
i ns/vstserver, while still heavily under development, could be worth keeping an eye on, it looks like it's aiming to be a VST-rack style app like Chainer: http://www.notam02.no/arkiv/src/snapshot2.png

Re:Rosegarden> How does Muse compare to Rosegarden?
Well, they're both audio and MIDI sequencers for Linux. They both support outboard MIDI gear, native Linux ALSA soft synths, and audio and transport synchronisation through JACK. Both look and feel somewhat like the big sequencers for other platforms. Both use Qt for their GUIs, though Rosegarden also uses the KDE libraries. I happen to think Rosegarden has the more polished GUI, but I'm biased (see disclaimer at bottom).
Both support arbitrary numbers of MIDI and audio tracks, with audio mixing and routing capabilities. Both support LADSPA effects plugins, of which there are hundreds available free. Both can (with some work!) be made to use VST effects through vstserver. MusE can host VST instruments with libfst using Wine; either of them can drive VST instruments hosted separately using jack_fst. None of these VST solutions is currently at all easy to configure and build, but see here for more information. Rosegarden is implementing the DSSI synth API and will probably ultimately use a DSSI wrapper for VST instruments. Rosegarden can also be run without audio support if you only want MIDI or score, whereas MusE always requires JACK.
My rather fuzzy impression of the difference in "feel" between them is that MusE feels like it came more from a studio/MIDI gearhead background, Rosegarden more from a composition background. MusE is a bit further ahead with things like instrument plugins, audio routing (send/returns etc) and automation. Rosegarden places a lot more emphasis on the score editor, whereas the one that used to be in MusE was actually removed completely for the 0.7 release.
Rosegarden is a somewhat bigger and more complicated program than MusE (c 200K lines of code vs 130K LOC), which you may see as good or bad depending on whether the extra code happens to do stuff you want or not. They're both written in C++, should you happen to care.
On the subject of soundcard support: the usual quick answer is "it's probably supported unless it's FireWire or made by MOTU". In particular the current M-Audio, Terratec and RME semi-pro gear mostly works fine, as well as most consumer cards. The lack of FireWire audio device support currently is a pain though. Anyway, see the ALSA soundcard matrix for detailed information.
(Disclaimer: I am a Rosegarden developer and, although I track MusE CVS, I have never actually managed to get MusE 0.7 to build because I don't have the right libraries and autotools. So do take all this with a pinch of salt.)

Re:It's hopeless...
Not to forget the Mitsubishi "Pajero" (wanker).
A car known in the US as the Montero is sold in some European markets as the "Pajero," a name which some of my Spanish and Portuguese friends find hilariously stupid.

and no future Herbert Hoover ever leads the FBI into another COINTELPRO;
I plead a late night and a good Hefeweizen. Of course that should be J. Edgar Hoover, and yes, I didn't close an anchor tag soon enough either.
As recompense, I'll point you to a recording of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony that sounds a lot like "ambient" music (scroll down for mp3s, avoid the Real Crappy Player stuff up top), because it's been s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d out to last for twenty-four continuous hours. It's uncanny, especially compared to a more normal Ninth, such as the 1942 Wilhelm Furtwängler conducting the Berlin Philharmonic at emusic.com (this during the war, so you almost find yourself listening for air raid sirens while wondering how many top Nazis are in the audience.) -
Re:fuck u racist
Yes, my brother really is Romanian, although I haven't taught him to swear in English yet -- he hasn't yet understood that different sequences of words in different languages have different meanings.
I guess it won't take long before he finds the Alternative Dictionary though, in which you can learn to swear in any language. -

Re:VST
Linux only doesn't need VST if you believe that (a) companies like Steinberg, Waldorf and Native Instruments are going to start writing LADSPA plugins, or (b) open-source plug-ins can do anything those can do and more. In practice, a look at the state of LADSPA plug-ins (which are mostly DSP textbook code examples and simple hacks) vs. commercial VST plugins (many of which do innovative things) disproves (b).
The good news is that it is possible to run (some) Windows VST plugins under Linux; someone has written a WINE-based VST server, which loads Windows VST plugins and runs audio through them on request from client. Source code for it (and Pd and LADSPA code for accessing it) may be found here.
Btw, I heard a rumour a while ago that Steinberg had a proof-of-concept port of Cubase SX to Linux working a while ago. -
Cussing in Esperanto
My point being that the awkwardness of cursing in esperanto limits it's expressiveness.
I was trying to bring to mind the typical endian flamewars.
And I was just curious as to which of head-initial vs. head-final corresponded to which of little- vs. big-endian. (Head-initial means noun-adjective and preposition-noun as in Spanish; head-final means adjective-noun and noun-postposition as in Japanese.)

MP3 or Ogg versions links
Why do content producers insist on using RealAudio? Give me a real player and I'll listen to to the stream. I'm not installing spyware on my machine.
So why won't you just listen to MP3 or Ogg versions? Is it that hard? (Sorry if those Ogg and MP3 version were added after your comment - but if they were added before your comment, then you should be modded down.) -
