Re:I don't get why the other companies aren't..
The Adam tablet by notion ink will have the option for the Pixel-Qi display and it looks like that it will be released for Xmas or early January.

Re:Note to Tablet Makers
Hopefully only until this November.

Re:Still waiting for my Smartbook
Here's one from the article: http://www.notionink.in/
And here's my personal favourite: http://alwaysinnovating.com/
Adam has Qi and Tegra, Touchbook II's specs are unknown at this point but can be safely assumed to be better than the old version. The Touchbook should be out in about a month, and you can install Ubuntu on either, AFAIK. -
The Notion Ink Adam Tablet
http://gizmodo.com/5471559/notion-ink-adam-tablet-caught-on-video-specs-finalized
The Notion Ink Adam Table is going to be an Android-Based with a camera that rotates (for video conferencing or taking pictures), 3 USB ports, HDMI output, flash capability, a pixel qi screen, and a trackpad on the bottom. WAAAAAAY better than the iPad IMHO. Just keep your fingers crossed that it doesn't turn into vaporware. Also on the main company web page, it seems like there will also be an app store for it. The company (as of earlier this month) is still expecting it to release later this year November. We'll see!

Re:E-Readers?
It doesn't make sense to make a dedicated e-reader with such a screen, as it would be capable of much more. For example, you could actually have usable web browsing and video playback on it. At which point you call such a gadget a "tablet" - and, yes, there has been a bunch of those announced with PQ screens. I, for one, am waiting for Adam.

Re:dual-mode display

Yes, the Adam from Notion Ink http://www.notionink.in/index.php. It looks very impressive, but not released yet. Hope it's more than vapourware. -
Re:NotionInk Adam
And every time the company mentions it, they're pushing back the introduction another quarter.
http://www.notionink.in/news.php
They haven't even finished the hardware or software for it - according to their own site! No way they're getting this out the door this year.
Heck, they even say to get an iPad now.No, not vaporware at all.

NotionInk Adam
If reading documents is one of your main uses for a tablet, then you should keep an eye out for the Adam by NotionInk.
It will be (one of ?) the first shipping device to use the PixelQi transflective display, which is an improvement of the OLPC display. It is a reflective display, like eInk, but with fast refresh rates like LCD. It also can display color which is far more saturated than color eInk (although not as good as LCD), as well as switching to ultra-high resolution greyscale.
The Adam uses the Tegra Chipset (ARM Cortex A9 + Nvidia graphics), and they are advertizing 16 hours of HD video playback, compared to 9 on the iPad.
It will run Android, and will be an open development environment. It was demo at recent trade shows, and is definitely not vaporware. -
Re:so why can't i buy a !@##$% low powered compute
Notion Ink has you covered if you can wait until June for their Adam. It's basically everything you just described, times 9000. And pricing in the bargain laptop range ($350 - $800). I'm not kidding, check it out.

Not quite there yet for technical books
I have switched to buying all my technical books as ebooks only (lack of storage space and need for Ctrl-F). So far I have found everything I wanted without DRM, or breakable. I really liked the watermark approach that InformIT used for one book: Each page says "From the Library of <MY NAME>". Excellent solution because I do not intend to illegally distribute my ebooks, but I want to use them freely on different devices.
I use Amazon to evaluate the books and buy somewhere else. InformIT, O'Reilly, Apress and eBooks.com have served me well.
As for the E-Reader itself, I tried a Sony with touchscreen in a shop and liked it. Good choice for novels. But I need a 10" screen and possibly color for technical books with illustrations. These look promisiing:
enTourage eDGe (love the concept, and this is very close to actual shipping)
ASUS DR-950
Samsung E101
Kindle DX: Can only be considered when it comes with first class PDF capabilities and when I can copy files back and forth via USB (maybe you can?).
Apple iPad: If I can easily use my PDF and
.prc files with it, it is worth considering. Did this thing actually ship by now??Microsoft Courier: Twice 7" would be to small. If it has the format of the enTourage eDGe it might be worth a look. Microsoft is quite good at making hardware

Notion Ink Adam - http://www.notionink.in/adamtechspecs.php
lack of HSUPA is the only drawback I can see - HSPDA does not have the upload speed I want for good def video calling.
