As well as Android as someone else mentioned, there is also Maemo http://maemo.org/ which is being driven by Nokia. They are due to announce a new smartphone in the next couple of weeks which looks exciting.

I'm reading and replying in w3m with 3 tabs open. It's my favourite text based browser. As other people have suggested, screen is good too, but I have just one w3m running in a screen window. Another screen window for mutt and so on. I like text based interfaces.
I play the piano and guitar to a reasonable level, but only ever for myself. I find it relaxing. For me at least, playing and performing are two different things. To think how this fits into your analogy, it's like learning a language to read books in that language.
If a gay couple moved in next to me I simply wouldn't care. If they started telling my kids about how wonderful their lifestyle is, though, I'd be pretty annoyed.
That's a shame. If your kids are gay, it might help them to be able talk to someone who can tell them how wonderful it can be.
