NPS Internet Solutions
I have been hosting with NPSIS since the end of '99, and I am very happy with them. Check out their web site for the different packages (they run FreeBSD).
-
RecommendationI'm happy with NPS.
Your requirements are higher than mine but for $7.99/month I get 100MB, Perl, PHP, MySQL, e-mail with a web interface and all the other usual stuff. Tech support has been helpful and friendly for the couple of years I have used them.
-
Re: Inflated costs
NPS Internet Solutions. Except for one minor billing mixup which was partly my fault I have nothing but good things to say about them. Their e-mail support gets back to me the same day when I have a question. I haven't tried any other methods of support. $7.99/month for the web hosting I described and there's a deal to pay for one year and receive 12 months for the price of 10.
-
Excellent Webhosting Company
I use NPSIS for webhosting and e-mail, and I have been very happy with them for the past 2.5 years. The customer service is great, and they continuously improve their setup. Their prices start at less than $8/month - you should check them out.

Re:Transfer Away ...
Yes, this is a problem that plagues almost 90% of our customers transfering their domain away from Verisign. It is simply their policy to lock the domain name down, I unfortunately have to deal with it on a dail basis, as a result I have posted up a warning on our transfer page: Registrar Transfer Page
Even with this notice posted, most people ignore it somehow, then when the transfer comes back declined they want their transfer fee refunded which of course we lose money on since crediting back a credit card (even a small amount) costs us a dollar. Its gotten to the point that I don't even want to try to do registrar transfer anymore. Too much hassle and headaches... -
NPSIS
Our whole network is being severely bombarded, amazing...
Take a look at the traffic on one of our T1 lines click here
The downward spike is when our network admin shut everything out for a while as he attempted to reconfigure our router and firewall to stop the attacks... -

Try NPSIS. I've had them as a host since December, and I am very happy with them.

Free = Good Review
Wrong. Free only means that the press can get their hands on it and run it through its paces. It is almost expected that if you are an up and coming software developer you will submit your wares to the reviewers like ZDNET and the likes. If you don't its corporate suicide. If your product stinks and they give it a bad review then you probably don't belong in the business anyway. I don't see anything wrong with giving out free software to the press and software evaluators, it is unbiased evaluation and advertising.

Goldrush
And we thought the rush for the dotcoms was bad... Now that everyone is more aware of the potential worth of domain names the mad rush to grab up names is going to be overwhelming. I'm interested to see exactly how the fair/legal way to allow registration of then new TLDs is going to proceed.
We already have a bunch of big brokers calling every week asking when they can start to "pre-register" names from the new TLDs. This is absolutely insane if you ask me. I sure hope ICANN and the accredited registrars can work out a good plan otherwise all heck is going to break loose.
One way to possibly handle this is only allow registrants of a particular name the ability to register the same name in the new TLDs and then for unregistered names in the .com, .net and .org allow a free for all.
That way we would stop, Joe Blow from registering yahoo.shop but if he comes up with a new domain like joeblowiscool.com he can register whatever he likes.

Christ! Give the kid a break!
And give
/. a break while you're at it!If your time is so GD important, don't read the bloody article!
You should be able to scan a post here in seconds and decide if it's worth your valuable time.
Of course, posting to
/. does let you display your self-promoting .sig... ...and it's interesting to note that a quick check of your site reveals the interesting fact that 45% of your links have either "My" or "Nathan" in them.So I guess you do think you're pretty important...
And finally (not to pick
;-) I'd turn down the refresh=7 on your web cam page a little. Something more like 15 or even 30 works well: at least then the entire image would have a chance to load before the refresh timer goes off and starts all over again...Just a thought..

It amazes me how companies bring these frivolous lawsuits to the courts over absurd issues. If Yesmail was really legitimate they would contact MAPS and would work out whatever issues or problems they might have. Whenever, companies are forced to bring things to a lawsuit you can usuall y expect that there is some foulplay. Obviously, Yesmail is the culprit here, not MAPS. If there business was legit, MAPS would recognize that and they would come to some sort of amiable agreement. Companies such as Yesmail are a blight and should be shut down in my opinion.

There is nothing at all wrong with an Open Relay in fact if we had less spammers there would probably be many more available for legitimate use. The problem is with the Spammers, I say go after them not the ISP's and others trying to provide relays for us to use.

Hooray for MAPS, maybe if MAPS can win a few more high profile cases and get more media attention it might start making spammers have second thoughts about their clandestine efforts.

Flaw
There is one basic flaw with bio-metric security systems. Even though they seem like a good idea in principle the transmission of the bio-metric information across any network or piece of hardware can always be intercepted by a third party and then simply be re-transmitted to spoof the real user. Ultimately, any bio-metrics gets transmitted into a stream of ones and zeros which can be recorded and then used by a malicous third party. More work is needed in this area to come up with better authentication schemes.

You have a point.
I've gone ahead and tested your claims and your right. For high resolution screens it is pointless to use font antialiasing. I also noticed a slight performance increase in my Windows machine. Personally, I hate to read text from a computer screen so if I have any serious reading I usually print it out on the company laser printer here. However, any less strain we can place on our eyes would be certainly much appreciated.

Who is this Kid?
This is ridiculous. Slashdot is wasting our time and their time interviewing some lame kid who happened to find a security hole in AOL, who cares? Who even cares about AOL, 90% of Slashdot readers don't even use AOL! I can't stand them. Also, this kid has obviously too much time on his hands and his parents are negligent as far as I'm concerned. Heck, when I was a kid my Dad had me out weeding the garden, etc... do you think I had the time to waste on frivoluous exploits. Parents get a clue... the best way to control your kids is keep them BUSY. Get them involved in different clubs, sports, and extracurricular activities. Trust me it is much more healthy for a kid to be involved in these sorts of social activities than to be cooped up in front of a computer all day. Granted some of us like to sit in front of a computer all day, but parents should be smart enough to force their kids to get involved in other things at least until the kid is of age and can make decisions for themselves. What is our society coming to anymore...

Serious Implications
If water is to be found on Mars, especially liquid water then there may be a hope for life on the red planet yet. However, for life to survive this liquid water must be fairly stable, in other words it cannot be freezing and evaporating but must remain liquid for extended periods of time. Considering the annual mean temperature of Mars it is very doubtful that this could be the case, but then who knows. Life has turned up in some interesting spots on the earth that no one every thought could happen. Just my two cents...

Domains for $15 -
Bandwidth
The cost of colocation is entirely dependent on bandwidth usage. Of course some companies pricing structure don't really make this clear, but it is the bottom line when it comes to dedicated servers and colocation. Actually colocation is not that expensive as long as your bandwidth is small. For example some of our colocation customers pay as little as $70 per month for 64kbps bandwidth. Of course there are those who need a full T1 and they pay for it.
With the industry being as new as it is, it really pays to shop around, since there is really no standard out there. Some companies offer great deals and others completely rip you off. Shop around...

Ok, this is definetly great news but what I'm wondering about is more games getting ported to Linux from other platforms. I really don't think we need this new platform thing as much as we need games ported to the Linux environment.
Take for example Age of Empires. Granted this is pretty much a Microsoft thing but wouldn't it be cool if it was ported to Linux? Until then I'm stuck with running my pc in dual boot mode...

The answer?
My question is if backward compatibility is such an issue why don't the software manufactures port the software to the new platforms then we wouldn't slow down the hardware development. I'm sure if they wan't to Microsoft could port Office 2000 to the 64 bit platform just as easily as they port it to the Mac. Come on, software developers do the right thing...

Excellent Idea
This is totally awesome. Why haven't we thought of this before. The privatization of any industry leads to its explosion of growth and innovation. I mean look at the internet, it started out as a government/educational thing and then people figured out you could make money with it.
Space exploration is no different. I would love to see a RadioShack robot on the moon or a communication outpost on Mars sporting the ATT logo. This is all good stuff, I say promote it.

Doomed...
Ok, I hate to compare this to domain names but I will. This compression standard will be similar to a
.cc domain. I mean nobody wants anything other than a .com simply because it is the standard now, it had a foothold. The same holds true for the MP3 standard. It has gained serious nameshare as well as tonnes of exposure. I mean how well have the other formats competed with MP3, like windows media and the vqf thing or whatever. Heck, I can't even remember the names of the other formats, that is how dominant the MP3 format has become. This new format will just be another Beta vs. VHS thing, I'm sure of it.
The only thing that will blow the MP3 away is something which has vastly better compression and comparable sound quality. Anything else is doomed to obsolesence.

Newer != BetterUnlike many technology-related things, the term "latest and greatest," doesn't really apply to security. "Tried and true" is almost always the way to go.
The AES candidates are all relatively new and untested. There may be insecurities that nobody's discovered. Older algorithms, like DES or Blowfish, which have withstood extensive cryptanalysis over the course of many years, tend to be better choices.

The Browser is Critical...
Think about... how do 95% of the population access the internet, via some sort of browser or another. If you can somehow get your fingers into this market you wield an insane amount of power. With your browser you can control which protocols and standards are brought into play or what will go mainstream or not. Don't underestimate the power of the browser. It is the portal to the internet and will continue to play a significant role for years to come.
All you have to do is look at the history of the browser to realize it is one of those things that is here to stay. If you compare today's browsers with browser's from 5 years ago not much has changed, just a little functionality. Therefore we can pretty much assume that the basic function of a browser will not change in the future and will remain a key player in the internet world.
My suggestion is to split Microsoft into further pieces and essentially make IE its own company. With this, the browser technology would begin to leapfrog again like it did when Netscape was on the cutting edge with its Navigator. Either way whoever owns the dominant browser will continue to have power to influence the standards and programs that make the internet work.
Nathaniel P. Wilkerson
NPS Internet Solutions, LLC

IE
IE should be its own company then maybe we would see a decent browser come out of this and also create more competition and development in the browser market.

Dying?
Who said pinball is dying? The person that posted this comment needs to give us some proof of his claim. I still see pinball machines in almost every arcade I go into. Sure its probably not as popular as the latest Tekken 3 but that doesn't mean its dying.
Pinball is kind of like The Beatles it had its day of fame but it will never completely die. Its to much a part of the American Culture. Ten years from now no one will even know what Tekken 3 was, but PinBall will still be kicking around. I mean ask a 6 year old Nintendo freak what Space Invaders or PacMan is and they probably couldn't tell you. Games like Tekken 3 are just passing fads, trust me they will never eliminate PinBall.

If only we had the power to see into these other solar systems we would most definetly find other life. I'm am firmly convinced that our exisence on this planet is not an accident. If you think about it and the billions of years the universe has been in existence it makes sense to think that life evolved quite a long time before we or this earth came along... and that life evolved to such an advanced level that we probably cannot even comprehend it.
My theory is that these advanced creatures actually seeded our earth and the life on it. In fact, they have probably seeded countless planets. You ask what is the point of all of this, I'm not going to give you that answer, you will have to figure it out yourself. But the point is that life as we know it is only a small part of the big picture really out there. I think these advanced creatures have purposely shielded us from interaction with other planets and forms of life to maintain an environment that essentially protects us and at the same time keeps us ignorant of other worlds.
Anyhow it is just some food for thought.

I know I got screwed already...
I bought a server from Gateway (don't ask me what possessed at the time, I should have built it myself). It was supposed to ship with windows 2000 server but instead it came with Win NT 4.0
So I contacted customer support requesting an upgrade. However due to Microsoft's new licensing crap they could not send me an upgrade since they would be technically giving me two operating systems, or something like that. The only other option was to swap out my server with one pre-installed with Win 2k. Of course I couldn't do that since I already had over a 100 clients webhosting accounts active on the machine. So I didn't get the OS I had paid for, long story short.
Who's to blame here and what action should I take. Gateway has been less than helpful...

NO change
So they break it up into two companies... how is that going to change anything. Windows (OS) will keep on creating operating systems that support windows apps and Window (Apps) will keep on creating apps that run on Windows (OS).
This doesn't change anything. There must be a better solution, such as sharing their source code or something.

Pagers are being nailed too!
I have an alphanumeric pager that I keep for monitoring our servers and it is usually spammed about once a week. Don't ask me how they ever got ahold of my phonenumber/email address for this pager. I suspect that paging service provider is selling these numbers off for profit, but I could be wrong. However, it is rather annoying when my pager goes off and I just about have a heartattack thinking one our servers is down only to find out that it is nothing more than another advertisement . Not to mention that every page I get counts toward my monthly quotas and soon I will be charged to receive "spam".

Why are you airing this on Slashdot? There should be a forum just for domain name disputes and the legal hassling over this. On a personal note I hope you win against Mattel but I don't give you much of a chance since they probably have millions to throw at this case.

After spending most of my life living in Canada all I can say is that sociallized programs and government subsidized services stink. Yes the price is great but the quality is pitiful. It is a great idea to give Internet Access to the masses but in our Capitalistic World the incentive will not be enough to provide quality. For quality you need competition not a "monopoly".

Too complex...
I agree this is interesting technology however in comparison with just running a bunch of processors in parrallel there is no real advantage, at least not in performance that I can see. Costwise however there would probably be an advantage but then you have all the problems of trying to make this heterogenous "solution" talk to itself. Personally I think we are better off just going the multi-processor route on a single motherboard. Also the Japanese were not the first to do this, similar research has been going on at the Almaden Research Center (IBM) in San Jose for some time now. It is just the japanese who where the first to publicly announce it.
My question always is, why do we need faster processors when the software we are using is still not utilizing this speed. Of course the argument can always be made that in a year to six months from now the software will have become so bloated that it will need this speed. I disagree, look at Linux, you can easily run a Linux box off of a 200Mhz processor, you sure as heck don't need 1.2 Ghz or whatever is the cutting edge right now.
The funny thing is that I read somewhere that Microsoft had come out with some sort of spec where it said that to have Windows 2000 run properly and see a performance boost in all its Apps it would need at least a 2Ghz processor. Boy, there must be something going on between Intel and Windows (Wintel) for this kind of announcement. You would think it would hurt sales but it doesn't.
Anyhow, I think the speed thing is just a little overated. I say we need to pay more attention to the motherboard speed and the peripheals...

I know this may sound strange but even though Descent on Unix is great and all, I would just like to see other games ported to Linux/Unix like my favorite, "Age of Empires".
