Do you really think the DOJ gives a rat's fanny about the stock market at this point? They're out for the kill, and they'll get it. The government always does. Nothing is a certain as death and taxes (taxes=government).

Re:Break it UP...
You make an excellent point. Your right break them up into competing companies. The question is , how long would it take for one of these offshoots to take control and regain a monopoly similar to the one now?

All it takes is the first few lines of this document and you can clearly see it is the usual Microsoft BS they are trying to shove down DOJ throats not to mention everyone else. Die, Microsoft, DIE!...

Break it UP...
I know we all hate to see Microsoft go but the breaking of a monopoly is actually good for us since it rejuvenates competition. Take a look at what has happened in the domain name business with the breakup of the Network Solution monopoly, prices have dropped dramatically and companies are now offering more and more services with registrations all at a better price. I say nothing but good can come of breaking up Microsoft.
It won't hurt Microsoft that bad, I mean do you really think the breakup of Microsoft is going to make Windows go away? Of course not. There is still too much money to be made.
If I was the DOJ I would be severe as I possible could since Gates and Microsoft are known to be hard hitters and even with a breakup they will still fight their hardest to maintain the monopoly they have now. They'll go down kicking and screaming, you can count on it...

It will never work...
People are going to stick with the conventional mouse... why?
Well because, think about it. If this mouse responds to taps and other sleight of hand then the device is going to be nearly impossible to control with any certainty. It will be very easy to accidentally tap the mouse or jerk it and have it interpret the interaction incorrectly. Sometimes less is more when it comes to interfacing with us humans.
You don't agree? Then take a look at the current trend in airplane cockpits... Give me that old two button mouse any day, and not the stupid trackball type either.

Piracy
Does anyone even consider the blatant violation of copyright laws piracy anymore??
I was shocked to read in fairly mainstream publications like PC magazine big names like John Dvorak actually in support of the MP3 movement.
As far as I'm concerned there is nothing wrong with the technology or the format it is just the way in which people are using it. It is scary to see that the MP3 "thing" is starting to become mainstream. Even my computer illiterate friends know what "Napster" is. The question is where will this all end.
I hope it doesn't mean the death of quality music since it is monetary gain which drives many of these musicians to go to the great lengths they do to create the popular songs we love. I'm afraid in a few years all we will be left with are a bunch of underground grunge bands producing trashy music. Maybe, I'm too pessimistic, but maybe I'm right...

A better OS
OS/2 was admittably a better OS than Windows. However, besides its frequent and unexpected crashes Windows has dominated the market. The reason behind the fall of OS/2 was not its incompetence but the weakness of the IBM sales staff. I've worked at IBM and I know. IBM is a great company when it comes to research and development. I mean look at all the innovations that have come out of the Almaden Lab alone (copper interconnects, Microdrive, load-unload, data mining etc...). Every year more patents are filed by IBM than any other high tech company. The problem is when it comes to competing on the "competitive" market, IBM is lacking. Maybe their image is all wrong, I don't know what. All I know is their ultra star hard drives are great. That is the problem though they have great technology but no flashy image, and unfortunately that is what you need to sell to the average consumer. IBM and OS/2 were both robbed by Microsoft but I won't shed a tear over this. As far as I'm concerned it's business. If any other company could come along and tear Microsoft to pieces it would, that is how our system works, pure capitalism. I personally feel that we should bury OS/2 and call it good. Besides when you compare OS/2 to current operating systems it just doesn't cut it any more. I think the future of operating systems will be with the high end Unix clones like FreeBSD, and OpenBSD. Linux doesn't scale well enough, at least not yet. OS/2 is dead, get over it.

Too much...
Who is actually going to read this code anyhow. I mean if there are millions of lines of code no one could forseeably actually make sense out of this big "Microsoft Mess". I think I'll leave the Windows source code alone, I have better things to do then to spend countless hours trying to make sense out of a overly bloated code base like Windows.

Former IBM Employee
And to think I worked there.
"According to the February 1998 suit filed in Santa Clara County Superior Court, IBM maintained an internal "corporate mortality file," a database detailing the deaths of more than 25,000 IBM workers nationwide. Of 10,331 employees who died between 1975 and 1989, 149 died of primary brain cancer, the lawsuit states, citing a 1995 study sponsored in part by the company. That's 10 brain cancer deaths a year at IBM, a startlingly high number for such a rare disease."
This part is really scary though. I never did like IBM or any other big corporation for that matter.

Why not write it in the code of your choice and then port it over later to python or whatever. The actuall language used doesn't really matter the ideas are the power of programming,... the creativity. Porting it over to another language or platform is just simple mechanics.

Re:The earth loses weight
Actually the earth is loosing more weight than it is gaining. Due to the constant solar wind being blasted out from the sun and small but significant portion of our atmosphere is being carried into deep space. Of course its nothing to be alarmed at since it would take over 10 billion years for us to noticably measure the difference. Anyhow its not worth losing any sleep over, which brings up the other question... why the heck am I even typing this reply when it is already 2:02AM in the morning. Good night

Ok, I give these guys two thumbs up but I am disapointed that they fail to list the Tucows and Core Registrars since these companies are offering the best deal on domain name registrations. If you want to pay a reasonable price for a domain name I suggest purchasing it through a Tucows or Core reseller. Hopefully they will add these other domain registration companies soon thereby providing a truly beneficial service to their visitors.

WinCE vs. Linux
I have to admit WinCE is a good attempt by Microsoft to actually create some code that is concise and efficient (because they were forced to by the constraints of the hardware). However, I'm sure Linux is more robust and "crash proof". They will be back, just as soon as someone ports over the drivers they need to run whatever it might be that they are trying to run. The momentum of Linux is unstoppable now. I hate to see a reversal in evolution...

Re:MPEG2 Tachioscopy? YES!
Actually it is possible to encode extra frames in but it would require the insertion before the post-processing where the data is compressed into the MPEG2 format. My question is how exactly they would extract the hidden message back out of the data once it is compressed. It would be virtually impossible. I guess someone could figure out an algorithm for this but I doubt that it has been done yet.

Hmmm....
Actually there could be some truth to this. I mean just take at Walt Disney's the little Mermaid , there are all kinds of hidden and subliminal messages. Nano-Bots
Most people don't realize it but this technology is much farther along than most of us realize.
While at Stanford University I was able to observe some experiments underway with "Nanobots". These particular devices were being designed for medical applications. Some of the potential jobs they might perform in the future is heart surgery such as a bypass without ever cutting open the patient and exposing them to infection. (ie. cutting, repairing, stitching up incinsions etc...). The technology has a ways to go yet but is advancing rapidly and I wouldn't be surprised to see full implimentation within the next five years...
Just my two cents...

The sad truth is...
I have to agree with this group of individuals after living first in Palo Alto and then in San Jose. The point is that all these high paying dot coms in the area have driven prices sky high. I was appalled to find out that at $50,000 per year I was considered poverty level... and it was tough, it never seemed like my wife and I could make ends meet. Finally I told IBM and the whole silicon valley area good-bye and moved back to Utah. So you can imagine what it is like for the "regular" people like gas station attendants, school teachers, etc... Both parents work and yet they still struggle to even pay their rent or mortgage. The whole silicon valley area is divided into two distinct groups, the rich dot- commers and the poor regular folk.
It is no wonder there is such a backlash against them. In fact, when I was there this whole thing was already gaining steam with some groups in San Francisco openly vandalizing rich dot-commers cars and property, in hopes to drive them out. I don't condone such actions but it goes to show just how desparate the situation is for many people.
I think the solution to this problem is already taking form as many dotcoms are actually locating in other places that have a lower cost of living and thereby alleviating the already exploding situation in Silicon Valley.
Just my two cents.

OOG SMOOG
You can't shuffle something like the e-commerce craze away as some passing fad, no its here to stay whether we like it or not. True some things lend themselves to this trend better but its like trying to say that the telephone will go away since it just a silly craze. Too many Risks
After watching "Mission to Mars" it makes you wonder if its all worth it. I mean there are so many things that can go wrong. I hate to be pessimistic but it will take a few tragedies I'm sure before we get it right. I mean look how many airplane tragedies there are a year and yet we all still fly. I guess we will have to accept some losses when it comes to space travel and exploration otherwise it will probably never get off of the ground.

80 vs. 160
There is no doubt that the limiting factor is the bandwidth limitations not the limitations of our hard drives. I mean we operate off of a T1 and 80Mbits/sec is more than fast enough for us. However, for someone who needs a high performance workstation I could see the advantages.

Can't these satellites be connected somehow to the GPS system that is already in place? I mean it could mean a better navigational system for everyone, more accurate.

Somehow related to Doubleclick??
I wonder if these things can be programmed to upload your complete profile information to some central database much like the one "doubleclick" maintains. That would be really scary.
Imagine these sort of monitoring stations strategically placed which download your profile automatically when you come within a certain range of them. They then all talk to each other since they are all networked and build a profile of you keeping track of exactly where you were and when you were there. I mean these things could track your every move. Watch out for "Big Brother".
Actually, these things could be really useful in some applications, but I doubt that many people would agree to carry one around.
Ok, this is even better. The little device stores all your like, dislikes and preferences, so as soon as you enter a store the interactive advertisments could adapt to your likings. In fact, you could sit down at a restarant and the overhead lighting could self adjust, the waiter would already know that you don't like mustard on your hamburger and the seats could change to your favorite color.
I think I'm getting somewhere with this. Let me know if I'm taking this too far...

Books Online
Ok, there are two reasons why this is really cool, actually probably more but let me list just two.
1) I'm not an environmentalist but this does save a few trees.
2) I couldn't help notice a comment posted by someone a few discussion back who basically claimed the internet was dead simply because it was now filled with so many commercial and useless websites. After contemplating his remarks I found it hard not to disagree at least to some extent. But on the other hand when something like this comes along it makes me look on the bright side again...
There is use for the internet... distribution of information that is both informative and educational. Granted there is plenty of crap out there if you go searching but putting a good book like this online restores my faith in the internet once again.
