Re:Paper ballots don't help steal elections
Uhh, no. He was reaching down to pick up a grenade that fell off his jacket, not knowing it was live.
Well, if you want to get technical about it -- the grenade did not come from his jacket -- it came from the guy next to him, and Cleland had a month left in his tour. The M-26 had a design flaw, in that it came with straight pins, which made them very easy to dislodge. Experienced soldiers knew to either bend the pins or tape them, but the other guy didn't know that and was walking around with a vest full of the dangerous straight pins.
So I didn't remember all the details but the important part is that Max Cleland went to Vietnam, a place full of dangerous things like Viet Cong shooting at you and live grenades that were badly designed. His Republican challenger, Saxby Chambliss, avoided Vietnam on 5 student deferments (University of Georgia 1966; University of Tennessee College of Law 1968) and a medical deferment for "bad knees" caused by football in college.
Democratic Max Cleland, on the other hand, was awarded the Silver Star "for gallantry in action" at the battle of Khe Sanh, one of the Vietnam war's fiercest firefights.

I still keep it with...
...Prof. C. McGinn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_McGinn) Quote:
...He goes on to point out that "if one could know everything about your brain of a neural kind ...its anatomy, its chemical ingredients, the pattern of electrical activity in its various segments ...the position of every atom and its subatomic structure ...everything that that materialist says your mind is, do I thereby know everything about your mind? It certainly seems not. On the contrary, I know nothing about your mind, I know nothing about which conscious states you are in ... and what those states feel like to you ... knowledge of the brain does not give me knowledge of your mind. How then can the two be said to be identical?"...(The Mysterian Manifesto: Shakespeare, McGinn and Me, http://www.observer.com/node/43473) -
Re:Why Subscribe?
I'm not too worried about Comcast. The things they do (especially this and the whole guy-sleeping-on-the-job thing) would only serve to either get people moving to other (non-cable?) ISPs (if any) or revolting for fair cable-company laws; it's all shooting themselves in the foot to me.
I am far, far more sickened by my favorite evil Northeast US company, Cablevision; they do seem to provide good service (my parents get cable and my siblings get their Triple Play; I've seen no problems with service, but the "Caller ID on iO TV" spooks me a bit), at the expense of basketball teams worth rooting for (FYI, Garden owners: free food does not make up for team negligence...not that you'd care with the money you make with that Triple Play and its associated annoying ads), competing stadiums (granted, Verizon is no innocent company by any means), competing ISPs, new subway/train stations, and maybe even commuter security (Cablevision suggests otherwise, but their words are hard for me to take as told).
To answer parent comment's question, I suppose people subscribe because...well, when you get email, Colbert, VoIP and such powerful, important abilities like the ability to RickRoll others and Digg the result (ugh *vomits*), who cares about silly things like fair and lawful treatment of consumers, sports fans, and competing ISPs?
Me, I'll use DSL (Verizon, which hasn't given me much, if any, throttling problems) until there's a good free wireless network or whatever, and I've already subscribed to a different TV provider that offers HD free (I don't care that much for Olbermann). To those far from good antenna coverage: good luck, and ditch cable anyway.

not the only major candidate with their own beer
Sorry to break it to you, but he's not the only major candidate running this year to have his own brand of beer. A brewery in Kenya, home of Barack Obama's father, is brewing Obama Beer.

Propaganda.Holtzbrinck was a Nazi. He published propaganda. He was allowed to survive in business as a direct result. I wonder what kind of books will be published by his companies if Bush/Cheney manage to impose their world view upon the rest of us. . .
Interestingly enough, all the biggest book and magazine publishers in the West, when you trace back their ownership flow charts, have prominent Nazi family names sitting squarely in the commanding boxes at the top. Holtzbrinck is actually one of the smaller players.
And people wonder why I don't trust the media.

Re:A whole book just for themes?
If you read the Drupal theme developer's guide you'd know that basic Drupal theming works exactly that way. A page template is simply an HTML page with tags inserted where you want specific components to appear.
The power of Drupal's approach to theming is that you can do as little, or as much, customization of detailed component formatting as you want.
It's a site development platform, not simple blogware that lets you play with look and feel. This is why the Onion, HamptonRoads.com, New York Observer and Ozzy Osborne's website can all run Drupal but not look or act like my weblog or JumpTV. -
Re:Clinton versus ObamaI know that Clinton hate is big on the internet, but she may actually be the best democratic candidate. She's the best if you want an unprincipled centrist who will say anything to get votes. She's the best if you don't mind the Presidency being passed from one family to another (Bush to Clinton, Clinton to Bush, Bush to Clinton). She's the best if you want yet another Baby Boomer who knows bugger-all about modern technology, and is willing to interfere with adults in the name of "protecting the children". If the rumors are true, the only good thing about Hillary Clinton may be her taste in women.

Re:How is this News for Nerds?Because There are rumors that Orrin Hatch is one of the potential replacements:
...And there's also Orrin Hatch, the 73-year-old Utah Senator who stood alone among Senate Republicans in loudly defending Gonzales these past few months. Some believed Hatch, who long dreamed of a Supreme Court appointment, was angling to curry favor with the White House so that he might be tapped for a career-capping stint as A.G. if and when Gonzales stepped aside. http://www.observer.com/2007/king-dead-long-live-k ing -

The New York Observer [ugly site], also uses it extensively..

The Really Huge Press Failure of TodayPrisoner rape in US prisons is the huge story that isn't being reported by US press. This is for a variety of reasons, but when the Slate article says:
We believe it never happened, just as our children might have been led to believe Abu Ghraib never happened.
They are acting as the press always does: Protect the US government from the public becoming aware that sexual sadism toward prisoners started here, against US citizens.
If there is anything worthy of the term "terrorism" it is the fact that the US government acts like a serial rapist that simply cannot control himself when it comes to the very demography that not only must "comply" with a vastly disproportionate tax burden, but which also makes up a disproportionate number of the deaths on the Iraq occupation: white males.
From Human Rights Watch "No Escape: Male Rape in US Prisons":
Past studies have documented the prevalence of black on white sexual aggression in prison. These findings are further confirmed by Human Rights Watch's own research. Overall, our correspondence and interviews with white, black, and Hispanic inmates convince us that white inmates are disproportionately targeted for abuse. Although many whites reported being raped by white inmates, black on white abuse appears to be more common. To a much lesser extent, non-Hispanic whites also reported being victimized by Hispanic inmates.
Other than sexual abuse of white inmates by African Americans, and, less frequently, Hispanics, interracial and interethnic sexual abuse appears to be much less common than sexual abuse committed by persons of one race or ethnicity against members of that same group. In other words, African Americans typically face sexual abuse at the hands of other African Americans, and Hispanics at the hands of other Hispanics. Some inmates told Human Rights Watch that this pattern reflected an inmate rule, one that was strictly enforced: "only a black can turn out [rape] a black, and only a chicano can turn out a chicano." Breaking this rule by sexually abusing someone of another race or ethnicity, with the exception of a white inmate, could lead to racial or ethnic unrest, as other members of the victim's group would retaliate against the perpetrator's group. A Texas inmate explained, for example: "The Mexicans--indeed all latinos, nobody outside their race can 'check' one without permission from the town that, that person is from. If a black dude were to check a mexican w/out such permission & the mexican stays down & fights back, a riot will take place."The causes of black on white sexual abuse in prison have been much analyzed. Some commentators have attributed it to the norms of a violent black subculture, the result of social conditioning that encourages aggressiveness and the use of force. Others have viewed it as a form of revenge for white dominance of blacks in outside society. Viewing rape as a hate crime rather than one primarily motivated by sexual urges, they believe that sexually abused white inmates are essentially convenient surrogates for whites generally. Elaborating on this theory, one commentator surmised that "[i]n raping a white inmate, the black aggressor may in some measure be assaulting the white guard on the catwalk."
Some inmates, both black and white, told Human Rights Watch that whites were generally perceived as weaker and thus more vulnerable to sexual abuse. An African American prisoner, describing the situation of incarcerated whites, said:
-
When individuals come to prison, they know that the first thing that they will have to do is fight. Now there are individuals that are from a certain race that the majority of them are not physically equip to fight. So they are the majority that are force to engage in sexual acts.
Another African American inmate, while generally agreei

George Bush - God's President
For fucks sake! your president talks about god all the time and half his voters and party think hes gods gift, do you not think this slightly more of an issue? Do you not think he might have a slight vested interest or biased opinion leading to violation of the bill of rights? Does this mean that if the court decides that 'under god' shouldnt be there then Bush should go? well i can
kill the suspense now and tell you that the mostly-friends-of-bush supreme court will be deciding in favour of god.

Re:Free registration
Maybe we can agree that the NYT is a well-written, serious and interesting newspaper.
I won't agree with that statement. I will agree it's a well-written, serious, interesting work of fiction.
To back that up, we can point at this, illustrating a bit how a reporter that falsified stories en masse (Jayson Blair) and a managing editor who tolerated same (Harold Raines) were kept on board because of a weird form of affirmative action (in the former case) and a personal friendship with the publisher (Arthur Sulzberger, Jr.) in the latter.
If you want more information on the Jayson Blair-authored stream of fictional articles appearing in the NYT's pages, just Google to your heart's content.
You can trust it as a newspaper again if you like, but i'm certainly not going to. -

Re:Some reviews
Also note Rex Reed's excellent review. He calls Ep II "as exciting as a rancid Yoo-Hoo".
As for all the Ebert bashing going on here, he loved Episode I, and gave it 3.5/4 stars. So you know this one must be simply awful if he's giving it 1/2 star less than he gave The Scorpion King. -
Some professional quality Moulin Rouge reviews
Well, that was useless fluff, even by Katz's usual low standards. So here's where to find some more substantive info about what's good and bad in Moulin Rouge:
Harry at AICN waxes effusive and gushingly positive
Paul Clinton at CNN is somewhat more restrained, but still surprisingly positive considering his usual skepticism about flashy stuff
Rex Reed is absolutely not impressed, and strongly negative
I'm planning on catching the film, based on these reviews. Heck, even if it fails as art I'm willing to support it just because it's trying to do something different and exciting.
Cheers

Slashdot/Andover/VA Linux scamFrom the article
One of the most cynical deals recently involves the merger of two software companies trying to cash in on the Linux operating system craze: Andover.net Inc. of Acton, Mass., and VA Linux Systems Inc. of Sunnyvale, Calif.-which went public within 24 hours of each other back in early December. Less than eight weeks later, on Feb. 3, the two companies announced a stock-for-stock merger in which the California company has agreed to acquire the Massachusetts crowd for about 6 million shares of VA Linux and $60 million in cash.
The cynicism in the transaction is not simply that the deal took place so shockingly soon after the two companies wrapped up their I.P.O.?s, but that the transaction included what amounted to a legalized bribe on the part of the VA Linux bunch to get the Andover.net crowd to accept the offer.
The deal means that the $60 million in cash from VA Linux will go directly to Andover.net?s shareholders, at $3.81 per share, in effect handing over the same amount of money Andover.net raised in the I.P.O. only weeks earlier. Prior to the I.P.O., the company?s insiders had only paid a grand total of $15.7 million in cash into the company. Now they are being handed back $60 million as compensation. What a deal.
As for investors in VA Linux, they are getting hosed. The company?s stock was priced in the I.P.O. at $30 per share, but opened for trading at $299 and instantly shot to $320, then collapsed like many of the others and eight weeks later is now selling for $110. Faced with 39.7 million total shares outstanding already-of which only 4.4 million are held by the general public-investors in the stock can now look forward to the imminent registration of 4 million more shares by the company, which will doubtless come pouring into the market soon thereafter, thanks to the Andover.net deal.
In other words, the only really valuable asset Andover.net ever had-its cash from the I.P.O.-was creamed off by the company?s insiders almost the very instant they got their hands on it, leaving VA Linux?s shareholders to face a 100 percent increase in the float of their own stock for the privilege of winding up with the worthless trash that the Andover.net bunch dumped at the very first opportunity.

Offtopic: Harsh Criticism of VA / Andover mergerI submitted this as a story, but it was rejected: An article in the New York Observer about dot.com rip-offs that is very harsh on the VA-Andover merger. Quote: "Prior to the I.P.O., [Andover] insiders had only paid a grand total of $15.7 million in cash into the company. Now they are being handed back $60 million as compensation. What a deal. As for investors in VA Linux, they are getting hosed."
I would be interested to see some opinions on that. I know this is off topic, but isn't the big argument against censorship: "Slashdot is the readers, not the VA corporate control".

Steve Case just a figureheadChris Byron has the best analysis in this week's NY Observer, I think.
My version (related but not identical):
- AOL's value is nowhere near what the market claims
- Time-Warner would be nuts to give away so much for so little
- What Time-Warner is really doing is milking the bubble while the milking is good, and when it collapses Time-Warner will still hold all the cards
- The stockholders can take advantage of the bubble if they're smart, but will lose their shirts if they don't get out in time
The only other explanation is that TW knows that they won't have to open their cable access to others, and can thus force AOL on all their customers (ie, the fix is in).
But I think all the metaphors about strangleholds and big players squeezing out little guys are naive propaganda-- the Web works in exactly the opposite way in the long run, and even a nebbish like Drudge can get a half-million hits a day with no advertising budget.
