Re:Two articles from Financial Times
As far as I have understood it (being a norwegian and following the case very loosely) , Timber Hill never filed suit. It was the Oslo Stock Exchange who discovered it and sent a report to the ( Financial Supervisory Authority of Norway ) who read it and sent the report on to the Ministry of Finance. Said ministry sent it to The National Authority for Investigation and Prosecution of Economic and Environmental Crime in Norway who then sent it to the police asking for an indictment.
The courts then found them guilty. -
The Norwegian Økokrim went after DVD-JonWho's the doochebag that went after DVD Jon?
Økokrim, The Norwegian National Authority for Investigation and Prosecution of Economic and Environmental Crime did, after they got a call from Espen Tøndel in the law firm Simonsen & Musæus (link leads to Simonsen and Føyen; are they the same firm now?).
Mr. Tøndel is MPAA's attorney in Norway.
The Økokrim decided to prosecute, the chief prosecutor was Inger Marie Sunde (University of Oslo; she is no longer listed on Økokrim's web pages)

Okokrim
Nope, Okokrim is a state-owned unit prosecuting economic, computer and environmental crimes. At least in theory, they are pursuing lawbreakers on behalf of the Norwegian state (i.e. the Norwegian people).
RIAA is a trade association, an interest group for lobbying lawmakers and protecting the interests of publishers of recorded music. They are purely interested in squeezing the most amount of money out of music artists and consumers.

Okokrim is NOT the equivalent of the RIAA!
Okokrim is The Norwegian National Authority for Investigation and Prosecution of Economic and Environmental Crime. More information here.

Re:ecocrime
You're not norwegian? If so, excellent guess.
It's actually spelled with an oe, but foreign characters are filtered in the slashcode. The letter 'oe' looks like an O with a slash through.
For those who may be interested: here's Okokrim's site. -

Short review of todays norwegian news
According to Verdens Gang (VG) (in norwegian), the Norwegian Economic Crime Unit claims that the creators of DeCSS are organized criminals, because "DeCSS written for, and can only be used to copy DVD movies."
From what I've read, it seems that they are currently discussing wether or not CSS is a copy protection or not, and the fact that Johansen didn't break any laws when he wrote the GUI for DeCSS. As you know, some german guys did the hard work, and Johansen is taking the kicks.
I'll keep you posted

Ecocrime is a real problemI have been e-mailing a couple of times with IM Sunde. I voiced my concern that they had a link to Business Software Alliance on their pages clearly without understanding that BSA is a highly political lobbying organization. Further, they demonstrate that they have no concept of "free as in speech" vs. "free as in beer". What's worse, my attempt to educate her on the distinction failed.
The problem with this unit is that they are highly incompetent. They run around after script kiddies, because anything more advanced is clearly beyond their reach. So, if you'd like to do e.g. industrial espionage, Norway is the country, cause legal enforcement is too stupid to figure it out (well, don't take that as legal advice...
:-) ).I'm pretty sure Ecocrime is not getting anywhere. Fortunately, we have The Data Inspectorate and the Consumer Ombudsman that are highly clued in many areas. I have been highly impressed by how these people have handled the spam issue (spam is outlawed in Norway with reference to long existing laws, new laws are in development). (In the medicall area, it is my opinion that the Data Inspectorate is too strict, their insistence that it must be totally impossible for anybody to unauthorized access medical data does in many cases hinder effective treatment).
Also, Ecocrime have an excellent track record in loosing court cases as well, and I'm pretty sure they are not going to get anywhere with the DeCSS case either.
The reason why I say they are a real problem is that their incompentense makes them do whatever they are told to do. The result is that they can harass citizens without having any case at all. They'll loose in court, but the mere threat of having the police knocking down the door seizing equipment may be enough to silence critics. I wrote an e-mail to the Minister of Justice about it (she's not awfully clued either), I haven't heard anything, but at least it didn't bounce...

Re:I think it's fake!
Actually, this is probably correct.

Norwegian phone-books claim that this number belongs to "Per Johan Johansen" from "3283 Steinsholt", which could very well be his father. I could not find anything about this company in the yellow pages, though. (Gule Sider).
What he refers to as NAIPEEC is Økokrim, where the "Øko"-bit may mean either economic or environmental, and "krim" means crime. They have a web-page, although they don't have information in english, as far as I can see. (Økokrim) NAIPEEC may not be the _correct_ english name for it, but it is a good translation of Økokrims own presentation of themselves.
I couldn't find more information about Micro Media ADB, as the search-pages of Brønnøysundregisteret, the register of companies/enterprises in norway, are non-functional at this time. -

Well, this isn't entirely correct ...
Neither Jon Johansen og MoRE did not crack the DVD encryption code, according to MoRE themselves.
The actual crack was done by some anonymous german guy (who now is a member of MoRE).
MoRE (including Jon Johansen) did DeCSS, which is just the GUI for breaking the DVD encryption, based on this german guys work.
Makes one believe that Økokrim interrogates people entirely based on "the facts" written in papers ...

Re:We need to help him.
The name of the institution that did this is "Økokrim". You can find their website at www.okokrim.no. Their main email-address is okokrim@okokrim.no. Try that one and see if you have any luck. / Roger K aka Anonymous Coward 8)
