Re:Canary in a coal mine
Get Windows 3.11 then. It's still on MSDN!
Don't forget DOS 6.22 to go with it.
Relive the wonders of AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS hell.Opera 3 works as a browser.

Re:So the only people that are hurt
You can still grab Netscape tho..

Re:Awww
Yeah, listen, hope it didn't seem I was knocking you for the bad link. It happens. Turns out a quick search turned up another source: http://www.oldapps.com/winamp.php (I hesitate to post it; argued with meself to no avail, so it goes.)
Cheers. Btw, your sig makes a good reminder; we can too easily forget stuff in the midst of the hurly-burly.

oldapps.com FTW
I stopped getting the latest version after 2.73. They started adding unnecessary crap from 3.0 onward, stuff that slowed down the interface and mucked up the layout. At one point I think they even included a malware toolbar with the install.
They're going to shut down "web services"? Who cares?
I'll be using 2.73 for another decade. Listening to all the music I downloaded using Napster.
Now get off my lawn. -

Re:Opera's had this for years
Chrome has it too, but hidden under Settings / Advanced / Privacy / Content Settings / Plugins / click-to-play
Not sure what the default is these days.Opera is a great browser, but sites with media content can be so complex, I just start with Firefox and the Browser View extension (very simple), and open the page in successive browsers until it works, with IE as a last resort.
The problem with click-to-play schemes is that sometimes there is a smaller Flash controller you don't see or notice. I've been running Firefox with Flashblock for years and this is a common problem, so I imagine it will be hitting click-to-play as bugs. People who use Noscript instead probably haven't noticed the issue, because once you whitelist a page in Noscript, it reloads and the Flash and everything else runs. But with click-to-play, you may need to reload the page whitelisted so all the triggers can fire in whatever js/flash system they have cooked up to keep count of the count-count. Remember when the Count just liked to count, and wasn't such a vampire?
Opera used to be the fastest non-IE browser to open up, so was handy for getting a quick weather report before heading out, but I think that has gone the way of Firefox as a 5MB download. With mobile not ruling the web, maybe we'll get some of that back.
Whatever turned Firefox into 20MB download I assume it should be able to do a good HTML5 emulation of Flash! http://www.oldapps.com/firefox.php (And Flash is monumentally bigger than its old versions too.)

Re:Interface? Give me cleaner code
That Winamp which has become increasingly bloated and laggy as well? Go AIMP2 and never look back
;)Fortunately WinAmp 2.91 still runs just fine.

Re:iTunes is great
Taken from the iTunes FAQ at https://support.apple.com/kb/HT2729 [apple.com]
:Videos purchased from the iTunes Store have FairPlay digital rights management embedded in the files
Ie. the videos will only play on devices with FairPlay DRM - support.
How old is your source?
"Currently, in the US, Apple does not sell songs with FairPlay encryption" - Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FairPlay
Your link doesn't say when the article was written. It does say, "Last Modified: June 26, 2012", but that doesn't mean it's been updated in years. I noticed the article also talks about needing to have iTunes 9, but no mention of iTunes 10. iTunes 10 came out in 2010 - http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.php?old_itunes=63 So, that article has to be at least 2 years old. -

Re:Then has anyone decided to fork the H.264 build
Actually yes, auto-update can be easily disabled and no, they do not have any control over what you do with your browser once it's on your PC. You PC isn't an iPhone and Chrome isn't Steam, so it can't automatically uninstall nor does Chrome tries to validate itself with Google in order to work, at least not without liborwell present. Also, lo and behold: http://www.oldapps.com/google_chrome.php Chrome since version 1.0.

Re:Jumping ship from IE?
If the FF install was 450MB of RAM, that wold be bloat. The fact that when open and running, Firefox might occupy a 450MB footprint isn't necessarily bloat, but either poor programming (if the RAM usage slows the system down) GOOD programming (if the RAM usage speeds the system up -- there's no point in having 4/8GB of RAM in your system if the applications never use it) or just a necessary reality (if you have 50 tabs open, with youtube clips and huge modern pages inside, they're gonna take up memory, no matter what.)
5x the amount of time loading pages as what? As 10 years ago when pages were all simple html/css? As chrome? FF isn't ~5x slower loading pages, it's ~5x slower running javascript. And that's not due to "bloat" but to the failure to keep up with advances in jvm efficiency.
If people really think Firefox has become bloated, they should try loading up version 1.0 and seeing if it really seems faster. But don't forget to run the current version without addons so they're on the same footing.

Re:Restart your *computer*?
Same here. "Your computer is running low on disk space". Reboot computer, 1.5GB free.
I actually just reverted to firefox 1.5 on my powerbook (thank you http://mac.oldapps.com/firefox.php), so we'll see how it goes. -

Re:Nice idea
apparently you can install iTunes 5, open a new account, never upgrade the software, and JHymn will still work). Hmmm...maybe I should just try that.
Yes, that works. Older iTunes versions downloadable here. I went back to iTunes 4.9 myself, I think the Search features went downhill in iTunes 5 and later (e.g. search for Composer disappeared).

Re:what format? No matter how much I try, it just does not seem to drag & drop. Any keyboard keys you need to press while you're doing that?
Nope.
do you know if there is any way for me to set another proxy to access the Internet on iTunes? The iTunes help says that iTunes uses the IE web proxy settings. But if you're seeing the iTMS store, it's probably not a proxy setting.
As opposed to coming up with solutions that work and are usable? [...] I'm on iTunes 4.0Well, the drag-and-drop issues you're having aren't version specific, but (IIRC) Apple revised their dialogs to help prevent unwanted deletions in more recent iTunes versions (I don't have an iPod, so I'm not sure). Not to sound (too) snippy, but you might try using one of the more recent iTunes versions before saying "iTunes sucks." The early Winamp versions sucked too (I remember jumping ship to WindowsMedia as soon as it became viable).
(if you're worried about the removal of the network sharing features, there are workarounds for the 4.X and 5.X versions)

Re:Free-er mediaI think that what sells downloads to the general population right now (i.e. teenagers) is the now factor. The Web 2.0 demographic are impatient and impulsive.
The rest of the world, on the other hand, might consider the quality of a purchase and the purchase price before buying. I know for me, I can generaly get albums for a few dollars cheaper on iTunes than I can buying the physical CD.
However, like the parent, I'm paranoid about losing my music. With a pre-version 6 iTunes and JHymn I can feel good about always being able to use my backups, however, it is a bit of a pain to setup and scrub every purchase I make. Also, for the average consumer, this isn't plausible.
Most people don't trust computers much. As such, even if it costs a few bucks more, most people will simply feel more secure with a physical CD in their posession.

Get OLD Versions of iTunes, idleTunes, and Hymn
I know how you feel. I have an iPod Photo. I have a car stereo and Treo cell phone that use MP3s natively. My "workout music player" is a Cretive Labs Muvo TX that plays MP3s and Windows Media Files.
The key for me is to use "lowest common demoninator" file formats, which means MP3s. iTunes is a fine Ripper, so I have it set to "Import Music" (that is, rip from CDs) in MP3 format (usually 192 kpbs, but sometimes 160). Stuff winds up in iTunes' library automatically.
OK, so that handles ripping my CDs and making them work on the iPod.
When buying music from the iTunes Store, it comes as AAC files with DRM. Big hassle, since it only works in the iPod (and iTunes, of course.) Fortunately, you can use Hymn (or JHymn) over at http://www.hymn-project.org/ to convert these store-bought songs into MP3s with just a few clicks. Problem: it doesn't work with iTunes 6, at least yet. The solution here is to keep using older iTunes. Since I don't need to download and play video, I still use iTunes 4.9, available from http://www.5star-shareware.com/Windows/Music/Multi mediaPlayers/itunes.html, or version 5.x is over at: http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.htm.
Now how to pull out iTunes files for other players? idleTunes to the rescue! It can take any playlist in iTunes and copy the MP3 files out to another folder, with the files named and numbered how you like them. It does other good things too. And for free. Get it from: http://www.idletunes.com/.
And that's how I keep my music flowing between all my devices. Works great. Hope this helps.
