other cancer-killing virii
Several companies are currently working on cancer-killing viruses. The most broadly used technique involves tailoring an existing virus (one that already dwells in the body) to be able to replicate only in cells with cancer-specific genetic defects. This is fairly straightforward because of the known set of changes that enable a cell to become cancerous. One typical target is the cell's self-destruct circuitry - if the self-destruct circuitry in the cell is enabled, the virus activates it, the cell self-destructs, and no further virii are produced. If the self-destruct circuitry is disabled (as in cancer cells) then the virus replicates, destroying the cell in the process, and millions of additional cancer-killing virii are released into the environment.
One of the exciting prospects is systemic treatment, in which cancer-killing virii are released throughout the bloodstream. The cancer-killing virii will 'run into' cancerous cells - even metastatic ones, and destroy them. This is currently in clinical trial with Oncolytics.

Re:Cancer-fighting virus? The company, OncolyticsBiotech, who have a short video (see link http://www.oncolyticsbiotech.com/webfiles/moviewi
n dowQuickTime.htm) describing the process, claim it is a "naturally occuring virus." If this is true, it seems unlikely that the virus could easily mutate to something truly awful. However, the uncontrolled cellular growth processes we call cancer bear some similarities to natural growth. (Cancer cells typically have really messed up nuclei, but there are still some functional similaries.) So there is always risk when messing around with mother nature. How soon are you planning to die?

There's some legitimacy here
I've been following for some time an oncolytic (viral) treatment that targets the RAS pathway, which is referenced in this article. The human reovirus targets cells with a disrupted RAS pathway, infecting and killing them.
Some great pictures can be seen here
The "CCZ molecule", states the article, "blocks a protein called Ras, which is defective in 30 percent of all cancers."
So there's a little bit of precedent, here. -

HIV virus approach is inferior to many other virus
There are many other virus approaches being pursued both in the lab and in clinical trials. At the forefront, is the Reovirus. This naturally occuring virus has a remarkable ability to infect and kill cancer cells, without affecting normal, healthy cells. Here is a before and after picture of a terminal patient with an actively growing neck tumour that had failed to respond to conventional treatments. This tumour was eliminated with only a single injection of the Reovirus. Researchers at Oncolytics Biotech have shown that the Reovirus can kill many types of cancer, including breast, prostate, pancreatic and brain tumours. Human clinical trial results indicate that there are no safety concerns and that the reovirus shrinks and even eliminates tumours injected with this virus. Numerous other third party studies show that the reovirus should be an important discovery in the treatment of 2/3 of all human cancers.

Another, safer virus also cures cancer
At least, that's what the initial results of the studies show.
The human reovirus has shown dramatic promise in early oncolytic trials. Some great pictures can be seen here .
The virus itself is non-pathogenic, lives in the bowels and lungs, and it's believed that most adult humans have been exposed to it during their lifetimes. Contrast this with HIV...
I've been watching this technology for a couple of years now it's slow going to get through clinical trials, but there's good evidence that reovirus may be able to treat 2/3 of all cancer out there , with little or no adverse side effects. Where it is not 100% effective, and radiation therapy is also prescribed, reovirus has been shown to be a good radiosensitizer.
Aside from reovirus, we're hearing more and more stories like this every year. I have a strong feeling that we'll have a cure for 90% of all cancer within the decade.

Looks like the same concept as Oncolytics Biotech
See here, clinical proof from phase I human study.
Not to troll or anything but with all the articles this week about how the Wright brothers weren't 'first in flight' it begs the question, is this a knockoff of the work done in Canada so people can get over US's NIH syndrome?

Re:Does it explain healing powers of some springs
doubtful. as i understand from the faq, the virus needs to be injected directly into the tumor.

ClarifyIt seems people think that we made this virus, if you go to the link in the overview you will see that:
3. What is the reovirus Reovirus stands for Respiratory Enteric Orphan Virus. The reovirus is a naturally occurring virus to which most of us have been exposed in our lifetime. It is a non-pathogenic virus, meaning that it is not usually associated with any illness. Between 70 and 100 per cent of the population show signs of previous reovirus infection, which is usually confined to the respiratory or gastrointestinal systems in the body.
4. Where does the reovirus come from? Reovirus is found naturally in shallow pools of water, lakes or streams or in the sewage system.
Hope this clarifies things.
