It's called The Phantom EditTHIS HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE!
It's called The Phantom Edit.
I honestly don't know much about it (having never seen it), but it's an amateur edit of The Phantom Menace, circulated mostly through the internet, but there are also VHS tapes and DVDs floating around.
Here's a message board with information:- http://forum.onecenter.com/phantomedit/
A very explanatory Salon Article: - http://dir.salon.com/ent/movies/feature/2001/11/0

I once saw some semi-official website but now I can't find it...anyway most of the rumors are that it's worth watching, decide for yourself. -
Phantom Edit 2001
A new Phantom Edit has just been released this month. True it's not by the same guy that did the original (LA) version, but then again the 2nd (NY) version was done by 2 unrelated people in NY, so I guess it makes sense for the 3rd (DC) version to be made by yet an other unrelated person.
You can find info about it at the phantom edit forum. Also you can download a 2cd VCD of the new version (thanks to Bit Torrent!) from me here. -
Phantom Edit 2001
According to the phantom edit forum (only thing I can get to right now, the site is down for "6 hours" right now) a new 2001 aka DC version (what's with the city names?) has been released. One person provided an ftp to download it from, but the ftp is dead. As someone who is just now hearing about this for the first time (and has too many SW-obsessed fans for friends) I'd be *very* interested in seeing this, or really any of the 3 (LA, NY, or DC) versions. Anyone out there have a mirror of any of them on a descent connection and be willing to share with the community or know of someplace we can get this from?

The *real* Director's Cut
Well, having established that the Phantom Menace was a shitty movie targeted at easily-marketable 7-year-olds, I'd like to bring your attention to a release much worthier of your attention. The Phantom Edit, as it is called, is an underground 'remix' of this movie, a remix that attempts to bring a small level of respectability, plausibility, and intelligence to this poor film.
No-one knows quite where to find a copy (seeing as it is a massive copyright violation), but I'm sure that Direct Connect, Morpheus, and WinMX users will be able to dig up a copy, somewhere. -
Re:Downloading "The Phantom Edit"?
Try gnutella (The Phantom Edit or TPE). I tried a google search and kept coming back with very nothing about it. I couldn't even find the denial on Kevin Smith's web site that he was the 'editor'. I'd certainly like to see it. There was a news blurb on Plastic.com and my submission to
/. about it got rejected ;-). You can try The Phantom Edit Fan Site.
