Sample Usenet valuesI think the intention of the original poster's question was related to bandwidth used rather than absolute content size. I'm not surprised by the 1.5% quoted in the article. However, the 1.5% figure offers no insight into the popularity of porn sites vs. other content.
While I don't have actual values for the Web (which would be hard to get), here are some statistics from an ISP that runs a newsgroup server. It's a bit skewed because they don't carry the high bandwidth stuff like movies, warez, or even mp3s, but it's worth a shot.
Of course, the major Usenet providers, like EasyNews, Giganews, and RemarQ would never publish these statistics, because they would expose themselves for what they are, and why people pay for them. It certainly isn't for the text files or the discussion, that's for sure.

The community isn't huge but it's definitely there
I work in an electronic music studio. I'd love to use Linux, but the apps just aren't there.
The fact that there's almost no development community addressing this potentially enormous market amazes me to no end.
On the linux-audio-dev mailing list, many things are discussed and software developed such as Ardour, digital audio workstation software for Linux, JACK (JACK Audio Connection Kit), a low-latency infrastructure for connecting audio applications, and several wave editors. Dave Phillips maintains a list of Linux sound applications--many are not that advanced but some are.
Work in this area is progressing, and many smart people are involved. In particular, Paul Barton-Davis, author of Ardour and the main force behind JACK, seems to be pursuing commercial possibilities of selling linux-based sound workstations under a company named Linux Audio Systems. You can read Paul's slashdot comments to see some of his opinions on the situation of Linux audio. -
jaz too - where's our rebate
Sounds like a good time to link to my diatribe about Iomega, the Jaz drive (which is also subject to the CoD) and Linux.

Somewhat off-topic, but why I don't like JAZ
This seems like the idea oppurtunity to publicize a rant of mine. See Why I don't like Iomega JAZ drives.

EVERYONE: Read This Book NOW!
I have been waiting to release news of this until the project and website was actually completed, but I guess there is no better time or place than now to point this out to everyone. I have been working with these issues for several years and luckily stumbled across this excellent piece while searching for community resources at the local library.
New Community Networks: Wired for Change
by Douglas SchulerThe book was published in 1996, long before most people even USED the Web, much less thought of it as a vehice for social change. I found out that the book had since been out of print, and since then have established communication with the author and volunteered to convert the book to XML so that it can be indexed and searched full text on the Web. Although that is not yet finished, you can read it at the current site on the Seattle Community Network's website:
Click Here To Read It!The entire book is online, and you can probably find a paper version at used bookstores or the library. I hope one day to be able to distribute the text to others if Doug has the license returned back to him. Everyone involved in the Open-source and other democratic technologies needs to seriously get this book - it was WAY ahead of it's time
Some of you may have never even HEARD of the term community network before; I hope this helps you to see the immeasurable value it can provide society.
As far as the development of Democratic Technologies, I myself am getting ready to go public with my very own ".org" - CommunityCode, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing, promoting, and supporting democratic technologies, namely an advanced information system that promises to be everything Napster and Gnutella have missed.
I will post more about CommunityCode as developments occur. The website, www.CommunityCode.org should be up soon, when we get the hardware setup, etc. Anyone interested in this project can contact me at my email to find out more.

Specs for ES1370, ES1371Dear penguin,
- have a look over at Walter Lord's excellent Ensoniq Audio PCI page
- BTW: Walter offers the 8MB wavesets for Windows too.
http://www.netexcite.com/audio pci/audiopcilinks.html
How I wish that we could use this under Linux/FreeBSD - has anyone decoded the format?
-
Then we got Michael Hyman's list of resources
-
The Linux driver from Thomas Sailer is here:
-
And on this daemonic site
ftp://ftp.lf.net/pub/users/Joachi m.Kuebart/es1370
Jochen Kuebart stores up his early FreeBSD driver (which is integrated in 4.0-CURRENT) and put specs online (they used to be on Ensoniq's site).
Another note:
The original Ensoniq Audio PCI seems to be closest compatible to the SB 128PCI, the PCI 64 uses a lower quality codec if remember right. ES1371 based cards might come with different codecs that comply to some Intel spec (you will notice when you read the specs). And I saw reports about ES1373 based cards - but I have no clue how this differs to the ES1370, ES1371 - and heck, where is the ES1372?
:-)I hope this gives you something to go along.

The EULA
I really don't think of anyway that part of the EULA could be upheld in court by that interpretation of it. It implies that no computer can be sold without windoze. And by buying a computer pre-installed with windows you cannot remove it. I really hate software, no other industry has this kinda crap associated with it. When I buy a vcr there is no license agreement saying I can only use it w/ brand X tvs or that I can only buy tapes from Y company or that I can't open it up and play w/ it (well most of the time that kills the waranty, but have you ever actually tried to return a product that died while under waranty? See http://www.op.net/~mstocum/ for my personal problems with JVC.)
