    Linus' behavior is also shameful.

Nobody is badmouthing him for forking. And I never claimed anybody was being accommodating - the wayland project is handling new contributions badly, and a fork was exactly the right way to handle the situation.

We did say he's free to fork things. He still is. We're all still happy he's doing the work he's doing. He's just obstinately insisting on doing it in a way that breaks compatibility with no stated reason.

He's not a bad egg for forking things. He's a bad egg for being constantly abusive to everyone involved in the project for the last year, which he has admitted.

Everybody involved with the wayland project is happy to see weston (the reference display server) get forked to be developed into a more usable desktop environment. That's basically what it's for, and this is far from the first (ubuntu forked it, ADWC was another fork).

This entire article argued he couldn't do what he needs with a plugin alone, which is not relevant to his problem with the wayland community. The problem was his refusal to use the existing mechanism to retain protocol compatibility by copying the existing protocol code into a new extension and modifying in there: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/wayland-devel/2013-March/008172.html

In four pages, he didn't address why he didn't feel like doing that.

For those of you who didn't make it by 6:45 PM PST, go ahead and send it to me anyway. I say this because when VV compares the list to the pre-orders at their store, there may be some inconsistencies. Some people may have not ordered at all. So don't give up just yet."

  11. idea - picture on Flat Panel Linux Box for $99? · · Score: 1

You walk into the living room, and see a pretty, scenic 8"x6" picture hanging on the wall, with a nice picture frame. You blink, and realize the picture just changed. You walk over to the picture, and notice that, in the wall just below the picture, is a panel that matches the rest of the wall perfectly (sheetrock, painted to match), but you can't see how it's actually attached to the wall. You press it gently, and it flips out at you, rotating, the same way a self inking stamp does (you should play with one of those for a half hour sometime, they're cool). Behold, a keyboard and trackball. This process disabled the screensaver slideshow you just saw, and you find an X desktop. The "picture" was one of these iopen things, mounted into the wall, so that the surface is flush with the wall, with the case removed, and a picture frame mounted around it. 8"x6" was my calculation, based on 10" diagnal, I could be wrong.

I can also imagine games designed specifically for use with this, based on flying or something. Jumping off cliffs & such could be interesting. It sounds like this device is relatively weak, so they won't have to add safety measures to avoid convincing your body you just impacted the ground at 300mph, going to 0mph in a fraction of a second. Even when only affecting this one sense, I figure it'd be rather unpleasant.

I also think it'd be very neat to make use of this for blast effects in games, so when that rocket detonates at your feet, you feel the sudden acceleration away from it.

They act like Mesa & 3DFX haven't provided this since March 14, 1997 (according to Mesa's Versions file). I am glad that there was one mention of Mesa (by VA, who I also noticed hosts Mesa's web site), otherwise I'd be more irate. But 3DFX has been supporting Linux through glide for some time.

I believe the only reason Mesa isn't officially compliant is because of SGI licensing issues, and that it does pass SGI's own compliance test.
