cheaper, too
I recently switched my mail/Web server from a G4 running in my basement to a virtual machine at OpenHosting. Previously, I was paying $70/month for DSL with a static IP address; now I pay $20/month for OpenHosting and $15/month for DSL without static IP. And I have someplace off-site to back things up to, and I don't have to worry about the UPS battery running out or the disk drive going kablooey.
The only downside is that my basement server runs Debian and OpenHosting runs Fedora. But nobody's perfect. :-) -
And virtualization may be the answer
We have a page on our site with some calculations on how much energy is being saved because we're using Linux VServer and why dedicated servers are not environmentally-friendly (at least not with the current technology - this may change). The numbers are probably off a bit, but they give you some idea. Also the street price for a 20A circuit in a datacenter is $200-$300, while the cost of a megabit is $100 or less. So a rack of servers that requires two power circuits and pushes 3Mbps (not an unusual scenario) costs twice as much in power than in bandwidth.

Why not an OSS CMS?
Why not try an Open Source Content Management System like Plone or Mambo? Being a technical guy you will probably find that the only way to produce a good looking site is to do it by hand, learning the intricacies of HTML/CSS and latest graphics tricks, and that's a lot more work than meets the eye. That's why those things are nice - they give you a more or less professional look to start with.Oh, and for hosting I recommend OpenHosting, of course!

Virtualization is the answer
We wrote about the environmental benefits of virtualization on our site a while back. I even started a little thread on Nanog about any numbers on relationship of server utilization and the energy cost, but it looked like few people cared. To see how underutilized your Linux server is, do:# cat
/proc/uptime
1122029.25 1101982.75
The first number is the system uptime in seconds, the second is the number of seconds it's been idle. The number above is from my laptop - 98% idle.
Virtualization is also going to be the way hardware vendors will keep the server price up - suddenly very powerful servers will start making sense. The questions is - who will win - Xen, UML or Linux VServer. We're banking on VServer.

openhosting.com
I also looked to Slashdot when I was looking for a hosting provider. I checked out openhosting.com and have been with them over a year now. They are rock solid technically and tactically. You get root on a virtual linux server, 1GB drive space, etc.

Try OpenHosting
Try hereWe provide VServer based virtual servers and by default we provison them with IMAP and POP SSL-enabled only.
As a side note - I've been using SSL for IMAP since 1997 or so and I cannot believe there still are people using unencrypted POP/IMAP, but there are. If you ever happen to be sitting with a laptop at a corporate meeting, one where everyone plugs into an old ethernet hub in the middle of the table, it is always a lot of fun to fire up a sniffer to get all the passwords from the non-technical people at the table checking their e-mail (probably using Outlook too). Then you blurb out the password in the middle of a conversation and whatch the person's reaction. (Be careful - what may be interpreted as a harmless joke in the late nineties, these days will probably get you fired!)

Get a locking mailbox too.
If your mailbox is on the curbside like mine, seriously consider getting a secure lockable one where the mailman can only drop mail off, but a key is required to retreive it. I just received mine from oregontrailbox. I did some research, there are a few places that sell those under different names, but the ones I liked are actually the same box that seems to be manufactured by pinnacle (or pinnacle is yet another reseller of the same box made by a unknown third party....)In any event, I will be installing my Heavy Duty Standard tomorrow...

OpenHosting Virtual Servers for the geeks. -
Jails
What I would really like to see is multiple IP's and private System V IPC in jails. It doesn't look like it made it into 5.2, unfortunately....--

Start a businessStop being a victim. Forget your resume. Think of something you can provide to others, put up a web site, start participating in local user groups on the subject, writing articles, posting to discussion forums, etc, to promote your business.
Become your own CEO, and run your business like you think it should be run.
If every laid off techie would think this way rather than hopelessly mailing their resume for the past 12 months, we'd be in a much better economy by now IMHO.
