Re:Double standards
Seems Opera Mini works on iOS,
http://www.opera.com/press/releases/2011/05/24_4
Apple was cranky about it, but after some kicking and screaming, eventually gave up. -
Re:I trust
I can't argue with anecdotes, they have no meaning in the real world. I agree that people should not be lifted up to a higher comfort level with government hand outs. However, we apparently disagree about whether that is happening anywhere in the US. I challenge you to find a reputable source that provides some sort of factual basis to back up your argument, I don't think you will find one.
I have been reading "Slaughterhouse-Five" and happened to read this part, which jumped out at me. This was published in 1969, probably before you were born. -
Re:This man *is* a loser, period.
I think the time is ripe for him to unleash the Yandex browser to the world, why not?
They do just that (and some more).
But doesn't seem to be helping much.

Re:Extended Support Release
actually, for Opera this is what you want to link to: https://addons.opera.com/

Re:Extended Support Release
What, like Opera? Tabbed browsing, mouse gestures, speed dial, several other things that later browsers copied. Those only became features once someone created an extension for them in Firefox, right?
Have you looked at a vanilla install of Firefox? Compare that with Opera and the number of features in Firefox is pretty much approaching zero.
If the only thing you want to compare is plugins or add-ons, instead of actual browser features, then you should look at things like this, this, and this to avoid making yourself appear uninformed in the future.

Re:WebM
And Opera
Actually, according to Opera itself:
Opera Mobile's support of particular video codecs is device-dependent: WebM and H.264 are supported, if available on the platform.
So Opera is not refusing to use the system codecs on mobile, like Firefox is.
Which? Microsoft and Apple? So to on each side then.. And guess what; Microsoft don't support h264 in IE, they just support plugins. Blah blah everybody blah blah.
Opera is practically insignificant on the desktop and they support H.264 on the mobile. And yes IE does support H.264 it's everything else they only support via plugins.
Yeh google should remove all support for h264 in android. Oh thats 60% of smart phones. woops. And remove flash and h264 from youtube. Should make webM relevant then. How many sites do you use which have videos?
And here's really the clue, there's no indication Google is actually doing any of these things. Chrome still ships with H.264 support, every Android phone ships with H.264 support, YouTube's WebM is in eternal beta while everything is standardizing on H.264. Mozilla has been standing on the other side waiting for Google to join them but they're not coming, it's like threatening to migrate from MS Office to LibreOffice to get a better price but in the end you're staying on MS Office anyway. And Mozilla is now standing there dumbfounded saying "but but but you said you were migrating". It's not Firefox and Google, it's just Firefox and wishful thinking.
-
Re:Transcripts?
Transcripts would be nice.
Much easier would be to use WebM. Not only Flash bloated and insecure, it is tied to a binary blob which is available on a decreasing number of important systems. Firefox, Opera, and Chrome all support WebM. There's no excuse to not be using it for the video already and reach a larger public.

Sounds great
While they're at it, I propose including a specification for a P2P system as part of the HTML5 specification using an onion layered approach to provide a level of anonymity with an encrypted caching system. I mean, what better way to guarantee you can upload content and have it shared even if your servers are overloaded while providing a mechanism that while people may hold part or all of copyrighted works meant for others that they don't really "possess" them and hence need not worry about potential copyright infringement until the point that they actively seek them out through some unauthorized means?
PS - No, I don't really think it's a good idea. I don't really think the video or canvas tags are particularly good ideas, either. I say this primarily because there's no reasonable way to graciously fall back as a general point (here is a hack solution, although I imagine it fails badly in practice for things like live video). Further, I'd point out that things like video and canvas are bound to be used and abused in annoying ways and may lead to all sorts of security issues, which is one reason why plenty among us tend to try to avoid things like flash as well when we can through admittedly imperfect extensions. I'd like to at least see some effort in the HTML5 specification to address these issues first before throwing even more stuff on top. Honestly, though, I'm not even sure if video really belongs in the HTML spec at all.

MS is not seen as trustworthy by anyone
That "ballot" was self-imposed and no punishment. It still left their browser installed by default, and that was the heart of the matter: illegal bundling and undermining web standards. And even though the ballot let them get away with the illegal bundling, it still wasn't done right.

Re:Topical sites cause traditional search to shrin
Yeah in Opera you can do something similar directly in the address bar, it lets you set keyboard shortcuts for search engines, so I can type 'g something' for searching Google and 'w something' for searching wikipedia etc.

Re:Nothing wrong with this
Opera very much gets money from Google.
In the past year, Desktop has brought in c. 70 million NOK per quarter, the vast majority of which comes from Google, which is approximately equal to 50 million USD per year.
In addition to that, Google is the default browser in Opera Mobile and Mini, but the amount there is far harder to quantity. Note that Mini alone has a userbase (in absolute numbers) equal to that of Desktop, so it seems reasonable to expect a considerable amount of money there as well.
-
Market share - boring......
Firefox usage is falling
It would be interesting to know if this were true, not as a percentage of the market but in terms of total volume (number of users, number of searches done using Firefox, ie something actually somewhat relevant to how Google derives revenue).
People seem to focus a lot on market share but I think it's a largely irrelevant metric for doing anything other than cheerleading. After all, you can apparently run a viable business based on a single digit browser market share. Given the astonishingly large number of people using the web this shouldn't be surprising but people seem to look at the percentages and forget the volume.
300 million sounds like a lot of money (because it is!) but it would seem to be less than a dollar per Firefox user per year. Would Google expect to derive more than a dollars worth of revenue per user over a year on average? It doesn't sound like a fundamentally unreasonable proposition (and Google should have the metrics to know, it would not be much of a gamble for them). -
Re:Give me a break
What about Apple doing everything in its power to slow down the standardization process at W3C (more about that) to ensure that Webkit stays in its dominant position?
HTML5 and co. would of been out of draft and adopted if it wasn't for Apple slowing them down at every turn.
-
Re:Then why not support Opera in their services?
See Opera's financial reports:
Opera's monetization strategy for its desktop browser revolves predominantly around search. Google is Opera's global search partner and provides the vast majority of desktop monetization.
...and...
Today, revenue generated from Opera's mobile consumers emanates primarily from mobile search, the Opera Mobile Store and content partnerships.
Google is Opera's default search partner for Opera Mini and Opera Mobile world-wide.
Both go on to mention other, smaller, search affiliation deals.

Opera prefs No Frames/IFrames 2 rescue
Use Opera to be safe from this, but only 4 Safari webbrowser so far is "vulnerable" to this, afaik too...
* Opera's got controls for any aspect of a webpage pretty much from its built in options (better imo than other webbrowsers by FAR) inclusive of the attack mechanism in iframes usage here (though it's only Safari from Apple that has the issue).
(OPERA ROCKS!)
APK
P.S.=> GET Opera 64 bit for Windows here -> http://dev.opera.com/articles/view/64-bit-opera-and-out-of-process-plug-ins/ (great 1st round port alpha only but is decent - can't WAIT to see/have final Opera 12 optimized & ready (which imo, shouldn't be long, this rounds THAT good))...

Re:how are the terms able to stay secret?
For what it's worth, people seem to consistently underestimate how many people it takes to build a web browser. Opera had over 700 employees as of Feb 2011 (see http://my.opera.com/haavard/blog/2011/02/01/decade ), for example. Other browser makers are at similar or bigger headcounts, almost certainly.
-
Re:First post from firefox
Same goes for Opera, which is extremely popular in Russia and CIS countries and actually beats any other browser. It has like 50% market share in some countries. http://my.opera.com/dstorey/blog/2009/03/16/a-look-at-desktop-market-share-cis-edition

I could care less: Opera64's out 4 Windows!
Great 1st round too (very stable 4 me & fast) -> http://dev.opera.com/articles/view/64-bit-opera-and-out-of-process-plug-ins/
* A "very merry Christmas" present from OPERA! imo @ least!
Additionally, it's been one I've been waiting for, for a LONG time now (e.g. - I've been running Windows 7 64-bit since it came out in late 2009, trying to get ALL of my apps in 64-bit form, & only 1 32-bit program left here, our subject -> CHROMIUM!)
SOMEONE TELL THE FOLKS @ GOOGLE TO PUT OUT A 64-bit BUILD OF CHROMIUM/CHROME FOR WINDOWS PLEASE!
(So I can "escape" 32-bit programs here, for the most part @ least, entirely!)
APK
P.S.=> Oh, & the subject? The SAME goes for MacOS X users too (I.E.-> It too has a 64-bit OPERA now as well, just like Linux has had for awhile now)...
