Re:What does this get them?
For that matter, why should the media player have to reindex the second there's a change made?
And that's the reason I never bought an iPod (along with the fact that I absolutley hate itunes, pretty much started when it installed one time while installing quicktime, overriding all my mime-type associations for music and video files in windows. My creative Zen only needs to rebuild its index if it hard-crashes (as in, you have to push the reset button to boot it), which happens like once a year. It acts as a removable drive, or syncs perfectly with winamp or the bloat creative suite.
As far as indexing files, try The Godfather, it can move files about, rename them, tag them using gracenote and generate playlists. It keeps my music organisation tidy: music\artist\year - album\artist - album - track - title.mp3. -
Sorta innovative softwareI don't know about innovative, but here's some worthwhile Windows-only (AFAIK) software:
- mIRC - the best IRC client, although this isn't necessarily saying much. The (unlicensed) Excursion variant of it adds some good features.
- AutoGK - great free software for making DVD-rips in DivX or XviD.
- Daemon Tools - CD/DVD-ROM emulator/image mounter with anti-DRM features.
- Real Alternative/Media Player Classic - like many other suggestions here, this one corrects a problem with Windows, namely the super-heavy, overcomplicated new Windows Media Player. This one has a classic look and support for Real media files, thus also solving the problem of the even worse Realplayer.
- Nero Burning ROM - like Toast only it doesn't make that stupid toaster sound.
- The GodFather - audio file manager/tagger with support for retrieving tags and cover images from a number of online databases.

Re:Tag & Rename
The GodFather is one of the best windows taggers, and it's free.

Godfather
Godfather would be your best choice. Rip, then tag with this. It can get its data from allmusic.com, which is way better than the ID3 tag databases.

Re:Wow, news to me
The GodFather is the end all of mp3 tagging/organization and naming. There is no fucking substitute.
If you're anal about your mp3/ogg/aac/et al collection organization/filenaming/tagging (of any conceivable kind, not just ID31-2.2) you need this program.
It can do mass renames of all files based on tags, mass tag generation based on filename, fill in track#s and those are just the basic features. You can freaking write scripts for it! Tired of lame things in the comment field in those mp3s you downloaded? You can empty every single one of them in your entire collection in about 5 mouse clicks.
The Godfather is to all other mp3 tagging/naming utilities what Photoshop is to fucking black and white only paint with no mouse support.
The only downside is the steep learning curve, it's got an interface about as complicated as 3D Studio MAX.
Just look at this feature list:
* Batch rename of files using Tag/Filename/Folder name/Audio file information.
* User defined Formats using Tag fields, File/Folder name or Tokens, Mpeg bitrate/mode as variables .
* Powerful case conversion including custom case and all the options you would ever want.
* Replacement matrix. ( remove unwanted characters or words or replace them. User defined matrix )
* Smart filters enable you to have only the files that are potentially wrong listed for renaming.
* Further refine your list to be processed by marking files to be skipped or ever edit the end result your self.
* Undo function.
* Batch Tag update.
* Supports both ID3v1 & ID3v2 up to date versions.
* Supports Ogg Vorbis comments.
* Supports APEv2 tags.
* Select specific fields to be updated
* Use File/Folder tokens, Tag variables to create tag information
* Filter files by the existence of tags or even by the existence of specific fields
* Update either Tag or all of them.
* Option to clear specific fields.
* Option to skip non empty fields.
* Use the case options.
* Use of the replacement matrix.
* Update tags by copying/moving or auto synchronizing one to the other.
* Delete all Tags or either one of them.
* Batch process of pictures/lyrics ( export, delete or both )
* Complete control trough the update process.
* Manual / single file editor.
* All of the above options are laid out to selectively choose, either one of them or all of them, for renaming or Tag update or both.
* Update or remove either of the tags
* Full ID3 v2 support including.. pictures,lyrics and more than 20 fields.
* Full Ogg Vorbis support including all proposed fields plus any number of user defined ones..
* Full APEv2 support including all proposed fields plus any number of user defined ones..
* File browser with detailed info of Tags & mpeg or Ogg vorbis/mpc/ape information , sorting and so on.
* Intuitive interface so potentially wrong fields/filenames are immediately found and presented.
* Organize.
* Easily create/merge play lists with preview support or simply find and listen to your favorite music.
* Encode/decode your files with LAME,Ogg Vorbis or mpcenc. (trans code with out losing tag information from one format to the other)
* Restructure the files on your hard disk ( copy,move or even create shortcuts ) in new user defined location based on Tag field information.
* Find duplicate files using smart and aggressive detection.
* Export files in delimited, fixed length format, Simple HTML or multiple pages using user defined templates.
* Import information from delimited files to rename and.or update your files, customized mapping to columns.
* Play your mp3's..
* Internal player with 16 band equalizer.
* Display tag info/ly -
Re:ID3-TagIt
No offense, but after trying ID3-TagIt and The Godfather.. The Godfather wins, hands down:
http://users.otenet.gr/~jtcliper/tgf/
Supports any audio format you can think of, supports scripting, online tagging/album art tagging, batch renaming/re-tagging, etc... too many features to list here. And for FREE! -
The GodFather
The GodFather is by far my favorite. It has mass tagging, renaming, organization, and handles mp3/ogg/mpc/ape/flac/aac/apl/wv/mp4/ofr/spx tags, scripting abilities, pull info from online sites, and free, but not open source.

Re:correct pronuciation
thanks for yr reply
i checked the page you referred to and i concede that it (and many more authorative references) indicate such a pronunciation
i am not a classics scholar, however several references to the proper pronunciation of Ouranus (the greek god of the sky) indicate the pronunciation i gave
firstly here is a good link to a page which gives the proper latin and old greek pronunciation of the entities whom the planets were named after
they give the latin pronuciation :
VRANVS oor-AH-nuss
and the old greek pronunciation
OURANOS (Ouranos)
oar-AH-noss, oor-AH-noss
note that the last sylable changed from an 'o' sound to a 'u' sound, however the stressed middle vowel is an ah in both cases
one thing that i did not stress in my first post is that there should be no 'y' sound at the beginning of the word either
secondly here is a more scholarly page which shows the pronunciation of ouranos (search page for uranus, and page works best if you have proper greek fonts installed)
they indicate an IPA pronunciation of :
[ura`nos]
so yes, in summary you could argue that the common modern pronunciation is correct even if it has changed from the way the ancient romans and greeks pronounced the word
however, i feel that it is an unfortunate pronunciation and i prefer the old one - i realise that there can never be a language police, nor would i welcome one, but i do feel that it is good for people to know that there is an alternative pronunciation to the common modern one which can sound better and is more in touch with the word's roots
i feel that the present situation arose from the fact that there was very little usage of the word for many centuries until it suddenly got shot back into prominence with the naming of a major planet after it - and unfortunately people pronounced it as they read it and not from hearing it
