Re:Really?
It always was about a political agenda. These guys have decided that nuclear weapons are evil and we should get rid of them, and the clock is a political device for drawing attention to their agenda.
Personally, I think the idea of negotiating a reduction of nuclear weapons is silly, when both sides retain enough weapons to destroy the other side completely. Furthermore, no sane nation would get rid of their nuclear shield while another potentially hostile nation is around.
I advocate peace, and suggest everyone visit P5Y, but reaching peace by trying to reduce the types of weapons you have will not achieve that goal. Any serious peace effort must allow for self-defense, because we don't trust each other enough yet. Nuclear disarmament will happen naturally in the future once peace happens, as citizens of countries would rather spend their taxes on things like healthcare instead of war machines. -
Re:The results match pre-election poll
Indeed, it is 100% understandable that the Iranians want to get nuclear weapons. If I were them, I would want nuclear weapons as well. But I am not, and I am not in favor of arming people who might use those weapons on me, even if it was my side that started it.
This is not an altruistic, fair way of looking at things, it's a rational, self-preservationist way of looking at things. I am selfish when it comes to preventing people from killing me. Is that bad?
On the other hand, if you want to talk about US nuclear disarmament, I favor it. If you want to talk about actually invading Iran, I am absolutely against it.

Re:Small business is what I do.
That's a ridiculous position. Is that what society you want to live in? Hey kid, it's not impossible to overcome all the obstacles we have left in your way, but statistically speaking, there's a 35% chance we will have put you in jail by the time you are 25. Also, good luck working a job at McDonalds and trying to get an education at the same time.
The society I want to live in is one where everyone is empowered to accomplish great things. When everyone is powerful, then there can be no robber baron types that take advantage of the weak. There will be enough other powerful ones to keep them in check. As for working a minimum wage job and getting an education at the same time, I did that, as did many other people I know. Frankly I can't imagine it was harder than running a fortune 500 company, or even a small company like the ones you run. Being powerful is not easy.
Let me amplify on that. I've spent a lot of time working, living, and talking with poor people in this country and in other countries. They are not stupid, they are not weak, they are not incapable. The limiting factor keeping them from achieving is their lack of belief that they can achieve. They don't know how to pick themselves up out of the slums, and often don't believe that they actually can. Which is 100% false. There is, as my sig says, nothing that the rich have done that they can't do. Some of them are even excellent businessmen, but don't know how to use their abilities outside of their small area. So the solution is education, if they realize they can achieve, then they will be able to, even if it means working at McDonald's at the same time as getting an education.I would point out that the top one percent of the country own over 50% of it's assets.
That's good, there is plenty of room for competition for anyone wants a cut of that.
No, but the most powerful usually are.
I'm questioning this statistic of yours.....why do you think this? I would guess about an equal percentage of poor people and rich people are coldhearted thieves.
And anyone in the war industry.
Sure, but once again, this is not limited to rich powerful people. People from all classes are willing to work in the war industry.
But things are changing, check this out, I think you'll like it: Movie on youtube and associated website. War is becoming less and less viable as a political solution.Slaves didn't pay taxes. They didn't have to, because their masters were the ones enriched by the work they performed.
Yes, which is why it's not good that the poor not pay taxes. It helps keep them out of the political loop.

Re:Right.
I disagree on the basis that one's own upbringing and state of mind are what affect a person's general psychosis - the video game or porn or romantic comedy will be viewed through that lens and assessed accordingly. There is no "probably-small destructive effect" of external media. External entertainment is not the cause even in the slightest. It may augment a person's psychological path in a particular direction but
then so would events that would seem completely innocuous to everyone else because it has to pass through their lens of understanding of the world. A lens that was built up and put into place long before they ever encountered porn, video games, or even romantic comedies. On a personal note some of the most peace loving people I have ever encountered play some of the most violent games and watch some of the most violent movies available. And you know what? As they assess this external media it merely reaffirms their commitment to peace. But then after watching Bed of Roses I've considered a rampage through a few flower shops....

Give peace a chance -
Total Flamebait
This is great. When the only thing differentiating Redhat from Oracle is service, Redhat will win because they are the ones actually creating the product. If there is any single company that I'd like to see pushed into the ground by open source, it is Oracle. Whereas Microsoft is kind of a bumbling giant that can't quite get things right but gets by on chair throwing, Oracle is downright evil. They will actively destroy another company if it makes them a cent.
On the other hand, Oracle is much less likely to go under because they produce other things of value that the open source community will have difficulty replacing (because we don't do much business software).

Re:TCO
We cannot stop all people who want to commit violence, but we CAN stop them from being in a positions of power, where they can start a war.
A leader without followers is powerless. Since war is not in the interest of most people, once they realize there is another way, they will not support leaders who bring them destruction, death, and poverty. In many ways it is just a propaganda effort, letting people know that peace IS another way, that it IS viable, and that it IS better. In that case, even selfish people will not support war because it is not in their own interest.
There is a page addressing a lot of the biggest roadblocks to achieving peace if you are interested. Or ask me, if you have more questions or the answer I gave wasn't enough. -

That has to be the silliest thing I've ever read. It makes the Communist Party look like hard-nosed pragmatists.

Re:Your sig has a stupid link
Here is a link that skips the flash intro: http://p5y.org/home, although I believe the video is still in flash format. You can find the video on youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tK6k4IqIdoQ. I don't know how to modify the URL to bring up the non-flash version.
You are probably less interested in the introduction video, and more interested in the actual plan. The book talking about the plan is available here http://p5y.org/pages/book. You can buy it, or it's a free download (PDF, sorry about that). Some of the major issues are discussed here: http://p5y.org/pages/issues.
The video is light on facts, and is more like an advertisement, but if we are going to move the world to a place where war is no longer viewed as an acceptable method of conflict resolution, then a good portion of the world is going to be involved, and the fact remains that advertising is still a good method to communicate an idea to a lot of people. But look at it, I think you will find it interesting, even if you remain skeptical. -
