Re:Impeach George W. Bush @# +1 ; Patriotic @#
I didn't read your message because it seemed dumb and off-topic but all I can say is I agree: I think we should use JPEG compression on Rumsfeld -- I think we'd get some good results.

Re:Power Switch - The Energy Saver
Question though: How many people that visit Slashdot are ever *not* using their computer? See, this could be a problem. Maybe the best way to conserve power is to have people join some sport or something (i can hear the laughing already).

Re:College isn't for learning...
It's good that a school is finally standing up against learning. Out of all the things wrong with America right now its education - we need to make it our number one priority and ensure kids of all ages and races are not learning in school. The results of learning could be devistating -- one day a few kids are learning together and helping each other out, next day they form independent thought and do something for the world. Geez.
Way to find a chisel on a tablet.

Re:Undue Restrictions
Question - did they say what they plan on using the information for? I realize all of the obvious negative results from even having this information but I was wondering what are their intentions in the first place? "We are undertaking a major initiative to update Connecticut's drivers' license system to improve customer service levels; enhance the quality and look of licenses; and improve card security. The state also has also exercised the option to utilize biometric features with the new Digitized Driver License system given the need for greater security since September 11. It has become evident that the driver's license is now a critical identification document. As such, it behooves the state of Connecticut to ensure that our licenses are as secure and tamper resistant as the latest state-of-the-art technology allows." That quote really doesn't say enough for me... there should be a detailed policy of what they can and can not do with the information.

The RIAA is Dumb
They blame Internet music file-swaping for all of their problems, even when they don't have any. They were complaining a year or two back that file-swapping is going to hurt CD sales - and during that year CD sales were the highest they had ever been in history. Now that sales are down 10%, it is time to point the finger at file-swapping services -- even though any real evidence that exists seems to indicate that the distriubtion of MP3s seems to help CD sales more then it hurts. If people like enough songs from an album, most (honest) people will buy the CD. Additionally, this helps keep album quality high - since consumers now have the power to listen to more than just the radio-singles at ease they can decide if the CD is worth buying or if the only good songs are the two that they play on the radio. File-swapping and Internet technologies, if adopted properly should reduce costs, increase sales, and increase over-all album quality -- the first and the last factors themself with also add to the middle one (increase sales). The RIAA just needs to get with it - they're always so behind on the times. Give them about 3 more years to finally get a clue.

Re:Great...
As long as Lucent makes it maybe we still have a chance to run it under Linux.

Re:Does it rhyme...
Yes, it sure does.
The thing is though - do we really want a Linux for the massses? It is only natural that it will turn into essentially what Windows is today - at least to the greater degree. Any comments?

Re:Any comments?
That's a good point - but still, you can trust someone to keep a system secure but things still happens - right? Sure the chances are cut, but it doesn't rule anything out. The safest way to design a system is to make it safe *by design* in addition to maintaining the safety. Wouldn't a valid argument be made for the Internet root DNS servers or am I totally off-base?

Re:Dumb..Very Dumb
This thinking happens everywhere. People don't give a damn until something bad happens -- until they get owned. Everything is perfect until the day the world actually falls apart - even though it has been happening for a matter of years - everything is fine until the day it happens. That's the kind of thinking.

Any comments?
Isn't the Internet's DNS system essentially the same thing? I mean, if I were to attack the Internet root dns servers couldn't that cause all sorts of problems - isn't that is a sense a single point of ownership to some degree? I know ISP/other DNS servers do caching as well.. but still. Comments?

Re:Cool!
You might find this interesting,
IBM still uses OS/2 Warp on *some* machines in their Rochester, MN offices -- they used to require a lot of the AS/400 Support people to run OS/2 Warp on their systems (mostly to avoid Microsoft OS Licence Fees) but now that has been lifted, but there still are people in the IBM plant that use OS/2 Warp... with that said I heard even they are making the transition to Windows 2000 (perhaps WinXP? doubtfully...). I know their are still some long-time IBM clients that have OS/2 Warp workstations... and they get the job done and are stable.
my two cents.
