The source has been available
The source code to PGP has been available for a long time from pgpi.com. Indeed, there is the freeware copy (it actually links you back to the main PGP page) of PGP 8.0 available there.

For people concerned about this story...

It's time
I think it's time we started using highly encrypted messengers and email.
We have stuff like GnuPG and PGP, but hardly anyone seems to use it...
Why? Because many think it's too much work to do so.
Well people, then stop making such a big deal about the government reading your mail and checking you IM logs...
Face it, it's the only form of protection we have agains governments that do not respect privacy. And I'm not talking about governments like China here, but the US goverments and the European ones.
Another thing is, here we only speak about governments... everhad the idea that companies may be doing it a bit sooner, the illegal way?
Imagine this: You are working for a major company. You have an ADSL Internet connection at home and use IM systems and email.
I know of one company (in .be) that is doing huge research involving ADSL modems that will give the major company the possibility to 'listen' into your IM and email conversations.
And that is just one of the possibilities.

Re:Answer: they could never work
There are method of hiding data in plain sight. Just read "Chaffing and Winnowing: Confidentiality without Encryption" at http://theory.lcs.mit.edu/~rivest/chaffing.txt
Also, said Terrorist could use multiple techniques together:
- write message
- apply method of Chaffing and Winnowing (above) or method of hiding messages in spam.
- hide that message in favorite media with outguess.
- encrypt that with PGP or GnuPG.
- encrypt that with the mandated, key-esrowed, back-doored technique
Now there are several barriers to break down, but only the easy one is known about until an investigation is already under way.
Or:
- said terrorist could avoid electronic communications, and meet face to face in a public park or on a public bus or in a crowd
Ask a gardener how they deal with weeds. Do you just remove what you can see, or do you go after the roots? Ask a doctor how he/she deals with a disease. Does he/she treat the symptoms and hope for the best over time, or does he/she treat the source of the disease?
Yes, cutting off one of their means of communication would be an incovenience for people who have evil plans. But is there a better we that we can deal with their evil plans in the first place?
I don't know the answers, I just ask the questions. -
govt measures call for citizen countermeasures
to answer your question, the government backdoor would be the Secret Password : "joshua"
if the government tries to enforce this, just bookmark http://www.pgpi.com.

Re:Backdoors
I believe that you're exactly right, and as a result you have what you can find on http://www.pgpi.com. However furthermore a large number of the best algorithms were actually made overseas (ex. Rijndael which is the new US government AES standard).

Re:So what open source app should I get while I ca
I was going to leave it at that, however apparently that incites the "postercomment compression filter" so here's some added crap just to waste some space. BTW: That isn't freeware but rather it's non-commercialware. It includes a firewall and IPSec too.

Voice over IP tapped? Here's the fixYou can download PGPfone at the PGP International site. It encrypts voice over either an IP connect or via modem.
It'll run on Win9.x (probably NT and 2000), Mac (probably OS9 and before). Zimmermann couldn't get his company to push this as a product, so he more or less put it in public domain, and if you think it needs to be run on Linux / other -ix operating systems, port it yourself.

Re:And this is some suprise?
I think a ratio type of thing would be a great idea, but how in the world can this be done? Obviously this is not too practicle in an anonymous situation
Perhaps the solution is a pseudonymous system, like the pseudonymous mail sytem. It could also enforce the use of GnuPG and PGP.

Crypto And Crypto LawHmm. for a good foundation in Crypto, I would recommend a look at PGP and Scramdisk (not only for the programs but for the information on the sites. In addition, the excellent Applied Cryptography is available online, as is the author's regular crypto newsletter CryptoGram.
I don't have much on the USA legal stuff (but that can be found on the above sites) but for the UK, currently fighting against one of the worst "Big Brother" Violation of the right to secrecy in communications bills known in the world, the UKCrypto discussion list archive would be worth a look...Finally, here are further links to, for example, the crypto law survey which will give you an idea of the legality of Crypto in various countries.
Good luck, and we will look forward to seeing your report if you choose to post it to the web.

Re:PGP for furriners (slightly off-topic)
There's always PGPi, which is the official legal exported version. It was sent out of the U.S. as printed material, which is legal, then retyped in. It also doesn't have any patent issues. And, it's fully interoperable.

Re:BSAFE Demands scare me most
Dan Kaminsky writes: "Ever since RSA insisted that PGP not use its independantly developed implementations of public key technology, and rather switch to the RSA codebase, I've been unable to trust BSAFE."
Good point. If the same reasoning should lead anyone to distrust the US version of PGP, consider using PGPi, the International version of PGP (available from http://www.pgpi.com/ ). It is Open Source and includes the source code to the RSA algorithm (and everything else in PGPi, of course). Being Open Source, it's very likely not RSA's implementation of the algorithm.

What ever happened to PGP?
I may be missing something obvious here, but why for crying out loud can't people use PGP (or even the new GPG)? They are available free worldwide without any export restrictions (see PGPi.com and gnupg.org) and are many times stronger than standard 128-bit stuff. Yes, I know a commercial license is required for PGP, but the mere fact that there is no export hassle should make it a no-brainer.

Re:What "Exactly" are the laws on US Crypto...
Find the original ITAR regulations somewhere on Thomas. Recently, the controls were transferred to Commerce by the Export Arms Regulations. String Cryptographic software has been placed on this list of unexportable munitions by the President. In a nutshell, anyone can write any cryptographic software they want. However, if the strength of said software exceeds 56 bits, I believe, it cannot be exported from the US without an export license from the Commerce Department. US citizens may not acquire said software, take it to Canada, and re-export it from there, however, I'm not so sure Canadian citizens are banned from doing any such thing.
As for where the list of munitions is, I'm not sure.
Why can PGPI.com export the code? At the moment, any printed material is considered to be speech, and may be exported under the First Amendment to the US Constitution. The current manufacturers of PGP simply printed the source code in an easy-to-OCR format, PGPi bought copies of it, and distributed them to Europeans who proceeded to scan and proofread them. -
This is an insanely good thing to see...Not only is this an insanely good thing to see, but it provides an excellent opportunity to endorse ssh and pgp.
You! Reading this article! Do you use ssh and pgp? If not, why not? You're part of the problem!
If you're not using PGP (yet), drop by http://www.pgpi.com/ and have a look around. http://www.pgpi.com/cgi/download-wizard
.cgi will let you easily determine exactly which version of is appropriate for your OS and location. PGP installation is pretty straightforward and there is ample online documentation and tutorials. Not only does PGP become more useful each time a new person starts using it, but the more people we have using PGP routinely the harder it will be to remove our freedom to do so. There's no reason not to use encryption, except for inertia. And I guarantee it's not as hard to install or use as you may be thinking.Using a nice pgp-aware mailer like mutt is a nice step, too.
If you ARE using telnet or rlogin or ftp, then you have problems now and you don't even realize it. Did you realize that every time you telnet or rlogin or ftp to a remote host that you are transmitting your username and password in clear text? Sniffing passwords is a trivial task, mostly due to the widespread use of insecure protocols such as telnet. ssh is a drop-in, secure alternative for telnet, rlogin, rsh, and ftp. Not only is it secure, but it's easier to use and more featureful as well. On top of security it adds such features as compression, encrypted traffic, encrypted tunnels, and completely automatic and secure X11 forwarding. Plus with RSA Authentication you can eliminate passwords entirely. A cracker can't crack a password that doesn't exist.
Unix users can obtain ssh from ftp://ftp.cs.hut.fi/pub/ssh/ and have it up and running in a matter of minutes. I recommend the 1.2.27 version of ssh (as opposed to the v2 platform) due to licensing difficulties with the v2 platform. Non-unix users have even more options.
For Win32 there's SecureCRT (http://www.vandyke.com) which is an excellent, albeit commercial solution. There's also a very nice, free implementation of ssh which works with Tera Term. You can grab it from http://hp.vector.co.jp/author s/VA002416/teraterm.html
There's even an opensource ssh for win32 at http://www.chiark.greenend.o rg.uk/~sgtatham/putty.html although I must admit that I'm not sure I trust an ssh implementation done by a guy who refuses to implement RSA Authentication.
For Macintosh, I understand that there's a nice plug-in for NiftyTelnet at http://www.lysator.liu.se/~jon asw/freeware/niftyssh/ although I've not used it.
There's never been a better time to be more secure. Simply by installing a couple of easy-to-use applications you could be on your way to a more secure, more private computing experience. Your data is yours, and here are two ways to ensure that it stays that way.

cluebie-freindly windows pgp options...
if someone is green to pgp than by far the easiest and most foolproof way to get them up and running is via pgp's native mail client plugins for outlook, outlook express, and eudora.
my suggestion is eudora light 3.0.6, at www.eudora.com. intutitive interface (remember netscape mail three ugly panes from hell? phooey.) and simple.
then stop by www.pgpi.com to pick up your preferred pgp version. 6.0.2 freeware works fine for people in the us. you'll want 6.0.2i (the international version) if you want backward compatibility, though. the great 'client selection wizard' will get most people through.
once you get these two programs up and running exchanging encrypted e-mails is a snap. just click 'encrypt/decrypt' (or sign, or whatever) right in eudora.
good luck. i've always believed that as more and more people use pgp, the 'digital worth' of each pgp-encrypted message increases. please help as many people as possible to download, use, and support pgp. it helps us all.

Re:PGP Source Code Book
I can just imagine the day when OCR becomes reliable enough to read books of code... then books will be software!
It already is reliable enough, especially when the book is printed with that specific objective in mind, as was the case with the EFF's book Cracking DES.The print is in an OCR-friendly font, with special provisions for whitespace, and with checksums. But it's still entirely human-readable and expressive.
The tools for both printing code in that format and decoding it once it's been OCR'd are available for FTP from the directory ftp://ftp.pgpi.com/pub/pgp/5.5/books/
-
Practicality & Phil Zimmerman
Actually the way Phil Z. exported (and continues to export)
the source to PGP 5.0 is even more bizarre.
They take the raw source code, typeset it in a particularly OCR friendly font,
and publish it as a book.
At the other end (Europe) they fed said book into a scanner.
After many hours of turning pages proofreading, and sucking on paper cuts :)
bingo... perfectly legally exported crypto code.
Harsh latency huh?
Yup. The insanity that is the US legal system,
while it will not allow you to export source code electronically,
will allow, nay defend the right to export it if you stick on a dead tree.
IIRC this method was successfully defended in the
US Supreme Court.
Confirmation of my deluded rant can be obtained at
http://www.pgpi.com/project/scanning.shtml -
Export law in licenses IS additionally restrictiveI posted the gist of this comment already up above. It is relevant here, so I'll post it again.
You apparently think that writing US export law into a license doesn't add any more restrictions to the software than US export law already imposes. This thinking is simple-minded and wrong. It assumes that US export law applies universally, when in fact it doesn't, and it assumes that US export law is logically written, when in fact it isn't.
- People who are not US citizens are subject to the software license (through international copyright laws), but they are not subject to US law. By adding provisions of US law into the software license, international developers are subject to US laws that do not otherwise apply to them.
- Contrary to what you might expect, US export restrictions do NOT automatically mean there is no legal way to transmit the software to international developers. For instance, PGP is subject to cryptography export laws, yet it was legally transmitted to the outside world through export in book form. If the PGP license had restated US export restrictions, then PGP International would not be able to distribute PGP today! The reason is simple: PGP International is not subject to US export law, but they are subject to international copyright law.
-
Export restrictions violate OSD. Here's why.I can explain, in a very few words, why writing export restrictions into a license does indeed violate the discrimination clause of the OSD.
