Re:Who is this aimed at?
We need Linux Test Drive centers, complete with in room experts who can help users understand how the OS works and how to get the best of it.
You mean like a Linux InstallFest? You are right. Very successful!
We (Phoenix Linux User Group, http://plug.phoenix.az.us/ do one once a month. -
Re: Support Your Local... DNUG? Yes.
Would you have the same reaction to say, IBM sponsoring a LUG?
If IBM sponsored a LUG, it would be because IBM's employees are Linux users. They would not promote any IBM product exclusively. It would work like any other company-sponsored UG.
An ISP I used to work for hosted PLUG's meetings for a few months. The company was not promoting anything, they were simply letting PLUG use their facilities and network connection. Of course, this creates goodwill towards the ISP among PLUG members, which brings the company more money. -
Re:Seems unconstitutional to me...
A law set forth in a podunk Arizona county by people who probably shouldn't be remotely involved in lawmaking is not exactly precedent for any type of broad-scale action.
Oh, you mean Maricopa county? It's podunk, alright. If, by "podunk", you mean the fourth most populous county in the United States. Maricopa county just happens to contain a little "podunk" city called Phoenix, which, last I checked is a major metropolitan area.-J

Re:Dear BSA... please audit for *Barratry*an indirect link to a definition from law.com.
barratry
n. creating legal business by stirring up disputes and quarrels, generally for the benefit of the lawyer who sees fees in the matter. Barratry is illegal in all states and subject to criminal punishment and/or discipline by the state bar, but there must be a showing that the resulting lawsuit was totally groundless. There is a lot of border-line barratry in which attorneys, in the name of being tough or protecting the client, fail to seek avenues for settlement of disputes or will not tell the client he/she has no legitimate claim. -
When you don't buy into corporate ideals...
... a 'virtual community' is possible. There's one here in the Phoenix area, and it has many unique characters. There are people in the circles of the Phoenix Linux Users Group, the Arizona chapter of SAGE, the the ASU Linux Users Group, the various BBSes (yes, there are some BBSes with even Fidonet nodes and Tradewars 2002, Legend of the Red Dragon, BarneySplat!, etc still running), and freenets that do have 'community' feel, where many of the technically minded people know each other. These spill over into the Sci-Fi realm with The United Federation of Phoenix, Tardis, and the Central Arizona Speculative Fiction Society. All of these groups contribute.
also, when one uses protocols like SSH and FTP and older text-mode IRC clients and such, the "dotcom" world doesn't really invade. As far as I am concerned, because of how it's implemented the web just sucks.

Re:Packet Monkey
Actually I know several people who work for and at thelinuxstore.com. They are members of the PLUG and the shop itself is located in Scottsdale, AZ.

no no no :)
The symbol of the Phoenix is perfect for Transmeta, since what other creature could emerge in its full brilliant splendor from the fiery death that is an overheating pentium? I submit to you, the answer is none.
Conspiracy theory for the day: the Kottler Caldera Group of Phoenix was a finalist in the design contest for Phoenix, AZ's official symbol. What could this mean?!?!?!
