Re:Your player won't play DVDRsDVDRs have certain portions of the disk already written to as part of their production companies licensing deal with the MPAA. The bits required for the disk key are already prewritten with zeroes.
That's easy enough to deal with. You write unencrypted content. Problem solved.
I'm more interested in seeing the price tag on this thing, though. Its predecessor was selling around $5,000, last I checked. The new combo drive should cause the price on the older one to drop, hopefully within the range of mere mortals, as happened with CD-R.... then you'll finally see the price of blank DVD-R media drop.

Here's a possible solution.I just did some research along these lines. The following is a summary of the solution I found. I can't really guarantee that this will work but everything I read indicated it would.
DVD-R Burner. Pioneer makes a DVD-R drive (Model DVR-S201) which according to spec will write a DVD-R which is readable in a Consumer DVD player. It also will support "Cutting Master Format" which will (in theory) allow you to burn a DVD and send it off to be pressed into "real" DVD's. About $5k.
Mastering Software and Capture Hardware. There's a whole bunch of options. I was looking at the stuff from Pinnacle Systems. I was more specifically looking at the DV500 product. It runs about $1000, but includes not only a Video codec (ala capture card), but also all the software you need to get going with DVD production. There are also other options, but this seemed to be the best value.
The best store I located on the net which has all of the above, plus more is videoguys.com
Good Luck!

New Monitors Bring New Way of VisualizationI believe we'll start to see more announcements like these are research into visualization techniques progresses. Look at the processor speed race. Soon we'll see a 1.4GHz Pentium IV processor, but apart from being able to finish a SETI work unit in 2 hours (I'm guessing), it doesn't bring anything new to the table. No matter how fast you make the processor, it's still just pushing around 1's and 0's very quickly.
Not so with monitors. The field is wide open--and overripe, if Sci-fi movie special effects have anything to say about it--for a revoluionary change in the way we view data. Whether it's a 50" flat-screen or a CAVE environment or a holographic projecton, I think things are going to start changing. And it will start changing the way we see things.

Re:Here's a linkTry this link to Pioneer DVD-Recordable. Says it can record data or video disks. Notice this is an industrial branch of Pioneer, not consumer products.
Notice that it's probably a consumer division of Pioneer which is running the commercial showing a dual CD/CD-R device for copying audio CDs. I don't see that device on their Web sites, although their CD-R recognition is apparent in this Pioneer article about consumer CD-R uses.
